Welcome to the 2020 HWY festival; an annual offering of new work-in-development showings, readings, workshops, pitches and conversations about the future of theatre in Brisbane. This year, HWY is the home for local and interstate practitioners, urgent conversations, allyship in the arts, stage to screen adaptations, parties, and the ongoing battle of remaining relevant and entertaining in 2020.

Partnering with Screen QLD and Brisbane Airport Corporation, we’re also excited to welcome Queensland Performing Arts Centre, The Tivoli, Supercell Dance Festival, Playlab, Crossroad Arts, and the Centre for Contemporary Asian Performance to HWY this year.

THE FUTURE OF THEATRE IN THIS CITY.

Join us for an impressive line-up of local playwrights and theatre-makers through the HWY Performance Program, including Casus, Maddie Nixon, Alethea Beetson, Katrina Irawati Graham, Kate Harman & Toby Angus, Daniel Mulvihill & David Burton, Ayeesha Ash & Conscious Mic, Margi Brown Ash with a team of Brisbane matriarchs, and many more.

Throughout the festival, we invite you to join the conversation, have a dance, connect and re-connect with likeminded collaborators, and contribute to the critical development of new works, incisive voices, and the breadth of theatre practice in Brisbane and beyond.

La Boite thanks and celebrates the wealth of artists involved in this year’s program and proudly invites you to join us, as we unleash the 2020 HWY festival of new work.

The HWY Performance Program will showcase seven new works in development, an evening of stage-to-screen pitches by local playwrights and theatre-makers, the return of The First 10 Pages, and more.

WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? Love. It keeps us together and tears us apart, drives us crazy and to touch ourselves.

So let’s celebrate all the ways to love – Blak, queer, family, friends, first crushes, love of community, love of country, a love that saved you. In a world full of uncertainty, loss and ignorance, we could all do with a little more love.

Join curators Grace Lucas-Pennington, Alethea Beetson, and a host of loving artists, as they answer the question, in 2020, what’s love got to do with it?

‘Cause sometimes, all you need is love.

Co-curated by Grace Lucas-Pennington (Editor, black&write) & Alethea Beetson (Artistic Director, Digi Youth Arts)

Performers include: Raelee Lancaster, Jhindu-Pedro Lawrie

AMATAGA by CasusDirected and co-created by Natano Fa’anana, Casus’ latest work, Amataga, explores modern-day versions and interpretations of “initiation”. These rites of passage will be recounted and performed by an ensemble of artists whose experiences range from enduring ancient practices, to being on a journey of discovery, to those who have formed their own tribes and been made to adapt to the present day.

Drawing on each performer’s lived experience, Amataga will combine contemporary circus, theatre, and personal storytelling to explore the culturally specific practices of initiation in a contemporary context.

Join La Boite’s 2020 Artists in Residence, Casus, and the ensemble for this work-in-progress showing as part of HWY.

Directed by Natano Fa’anana Performers include: Rhianna Patrick, Loki Liddle and Paula Nazarski

ANARCHY IN THE ARCHIVES When theatre companies reach significant milestones, curated reflections often present a missed opportunity for truth telling and change. During its 95-year history, like most theatre companies, La Boite has contributed to the misrepresentation and silenced narratives of Indigenous stories.

Since the 1970s, Indigenous artists have worked within La Boite’s four walls to reclaim space, assert artistic sovereignty and share their stories. These artists paved the way for Indigenous theatre-makers working with La Boite today.

In 2020, we consider the impact of those narratives on the future of Indigenous representation in our theatres.

Join Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi + Wiradjuri artist, producer and scholar, Alethea Beetson, as she exhumes the La Boite archives to revisit texts dealing with Indigenous content. In a series of rehearsed readings, Alethea aims to play her part in reclaiming space, asserting artistic sovereignty and sharing Indigenous truth from a place of agency.

Curated and directed by Alethea Beetson

Performers include: Roxanne McDonald, Ngoc Phan and Andrew Buchanan

THE PARABLE PEOPLE by Maddie Nixon When we lose faith, hope dies.

The Parable People are a puppeteering couple, travelling across remote and regional Queensland, spreading the word of the lord via puppetry and drama. They’re Australia’s favourite Christian Puppeteers. Well, they were…

Now, Tim and Lisa are riding their lowest ever post show blues, trapped inside of a church, in Toowoomba. Outside, the Earth as they know it is coming to an end.

When stoner dude bro, Josh, arrives, seeking shelter, they see it as their mission to take him in. While Tim and Lisa are fighting for their lives, Josh just wants to party out the end of the world.

This unlikely trio must come together in order to survive the impending apocalypse.

An action-packed comedy, The Parable People interrogates religion and its impact on personal identities and relationships in modern Australia.

Directed by Sanja Simic

THE FIRST 10 PAGES 2.0The 2020 HWY Festival heralds the return of The First 10 Pages, an evening of works by local writers, originally written for screen, directed by Todd MacDonald (Artistic Director, La Boite) and performed by a bevy of Brisbane actors.

The catch – you will only hear the first ten pages of each screenplay!

A testing ground for new ideas, rough drafts, and hesitant jokes, The First 10 Pages 2.0 gives writers for screen an opportunity to have their works heard in front of an audience for the first time. As the night progresses, the audience will be invited to feed into a dialogue about the future of each work, and, this year, we’ve invited a panel of industry experts to get in on the action.

Directed by Todd MacDonald

The 2020 line-up of industry experts includes: Tarcey Viera (CCO Hoodlum, Past CEO SQ), Nadine Bates (CEO, Like A Photon Creative), and Anthony Mullins (Screenwriter).

HWY X SPARKS: SHADOW IN A DRESSby Hannah BelanszkyIn 2020, La Boite is excited to collaborate with Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) and Playlab Theatre, presenting a reading of a full-length play by a First Nations playwright, whose work has been developed through the SPARKS program.

After the forest is ravaged by a mysterious and devastating fire, Alix, Rae, and Sunshine return to their coven’s secret ritual site there, to remove evidence of their group’s activity. When a spell, intending to heal the forest and undo the damage done, has unexpected effects, the three women are forced to address the nature of their powers, magic or otherwise.

A play about connection, belonging, and the nurturing of young women, Hannah Belanszky’s Shadow in a Dress explores female power and how it should be used.

Directed by Nadine McDonald-Dowd

SITI RUBIYAHby Katrina Irawati Graham Feminist horror filmmaker Katrina Irawati Graham’s Siti Rubiyah is a contemporary Indonesian-Australian work inspired, in part, by Mochtar Lubis’ classic 1975 novel, Harimau! Harimau! (Tiger! Tiger!). In Lubis’ original work, the vulnerable young Siti Rubiyah is abandoned to her fate at the hands of powerful shaman Wak Hitam. Graham’s re-imagining places the character Siti Rubiyah at the centre of an evocative story set deep in a Sumatran jungle, where magic surrealism and horror elements weave a mythical parallel world.

Directed by Courtney Stewart

Performers include: Ling Tang Cooper, Silvan Rus, Nicole Hoskins and Loani Arman

LOVE LETTERS TO THE FUTURE OF THEATRE: Considering history, legacy, and what’s to come This HWY festival, La Boite invites some of the city’s most revered matriarchs to share their thoughts, voices, and wisdom.

In a series of 10-minute monologues, each woman will draw on decades of personal experience to consider Brisbane’s long and complex theatre history and notions of legacy, while positing a provocation for the future – what does the next 100 years of theatre in Brisbane look like?

Join us at La Boite for this exclusive, one-off presentation; five love letters to Brisbane theatre’s past, present, and future.

Directed by Margi Brown-Ash

Performers include Paula Nazarski, Barb Lowing, Kaye Stevenson, Penny Everingham, and Lucinda Shaw

Siti Rubiyah was developed through the Lotus Playwriting Project, an initiative of CAAP and Playwriting Australia supported by the Girgensohn Foundation. It is commissioned and co-presented in HWY by CAAP.

THIS AIN’T NO PUSSY SHOW… by Kate HarmanEver wondered if patriarchy was a pyramid scheme for men, too? Kate has and she ain’t pussying around; she has a boy to raise and he has questions.

Why are you shouting? Am I really toxic? How come you can say dick but I can’t say pussy?

She has questions, too.

Kate, a dancer and a mother, together with Toby, a 14-year-old skater, deep-dive into our world right now. Using text, movement, skateboarding, map-making and rap music, they discuss privilege and patriarchy, feminism and masculinity, and reveal everything – faults and all. They make space for each other in a poetic and personal evocation of the relationship between mother and son.

It’s a messy, wild, unpredictable, and sometimes foolish terrain that doesn’t have a clear ending. This is their map, a landscape of danger and misunderstanding, as they turn this black and white world into a sea of grey.

Created and performed by Kate Harman & Toby Angus Words and co-direction by Gavin Webber Dramaturgy by Min Collie-Holmes

A BULLET FOR MY SWEETHEART by David Burton & Daniel Mulvihill After discovering their respective partners are having an affair, an unhinged half-brother and sister hold them hostage at gunpoint. As police gather at their apartment doorstep, the two are forced to confront childhood secrets and come up with an impossible escape plan.

A two-hander, one act play, A Bullet for My Sweetheart is a brutal, dark comedy that explores the desperate extremes of familial and romantic love. It’s a distinctly Queensland tale, with a hint of Sam Shepherd and Martin McDonagh.

Co-directed by Mads Dyer and Kodie Bedford Dramaturg/Indigenous Consultant: Kodie Bedford

The panel will offer reflections on the complexities of traversing two distinct forms to tell the same(ish) story, the process of writing, directing and producing for a stage-to-screen adaptation, and insights into what market and screen audiences are looking for in 2020.

Facilitated by Jo Dillon (Executive VP, Screen QLD) Panellists include: Nathan Mayfield (EP, Hoodlum) Kerrin McNeil (Head of Development, Hoodlum), Lisa Duff (Screen Australia), Bain Stewart (Oombarra Productions)
