Safety Information

A. Laser SafetyThis product complies with 21 CFR Chapter 1 Subchapter J as a Class 1 laser product under the U.S.Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Radiation Performance Standard according to theRadiation Control for Health and Safety Act of 1968. Special Features Screen

When you press [SPECIAL FEATURES] in the Copy Basic Features screen, the Special Featuresscreen appears in the touch panel display. The Special Features screen displays special functionsavailable for copying. When a function is selected, a more detailed screen for the selected modeappears. To close the Special Features screen and return to the Basic Features screen, press the[DONE] key. Pressing the

key after selecting a function brings up a help screen with guidanceinformation.

Press to select or cancel the Transparency Interleavingmode. This mode enables you to insert a blank sheetbetween each transparency when copying transparen-cies. It is also possible to have the same image printedon the inserted sheet as on the transparency. (See“Making Copies with Sheets of Paper Interleavedbetween Transparencies,” on p. 3-4.)

Press to select or cancel the Sharpness mode. This modeenables you to make copies of original images with the contrastreproduced more sharply. (See “Making Sharp Contrast Copies,”on p. 3-31.)

Selecting a Mail Box Screen

NOTICE●You cannot use a Mail Box if the machine does not have the printer function.●Each Mail Box can store up to 100 documents.

When you press the MAIL BOX key, the “Mail Box Selection Screen” appears in the touch panel display. Whenprinting data from a computer using this machine, you can first input the data to a registered Mail Box,then print it as desired.The printing operation is performed from this machine, enabling you to avoid mixing the prints withcopies. Also, you can set a password in the Mail Box, enabling you to make prints while preventingother persons from observing the data in the Mail Box.

Print Monitor Screen

By using the Print Monitor screen, you can check the status of a printing document, cancel printing, orspecify the printing priority.

Safety Considerations

● Do not install the machine in unstable locationssuch as on unsteady platforms or on inclinedfloors, or in locations which are subject toexcessive vibrations, as this may cause themachine to fall or tip over, resulting in personalinjury.

● Do not install the machine in such a way thatthe ventilation ports are blocked by objects. Ifthe ventilation ports are blocked, heat will buildup inside the machine and may result in a fire.

● Do not place heavy objects on the machine, asthey may tip over or fall resulting in personalinjury.

Installation

WARNING ● Do not install the machine near alcohol, paintthinner or other inflammable substances. Ifinflammable substances come into contact withelectrical parts inside the machine, this mayresult in fire or electrical shock.

Power Supply

● Do not plug the machine into a multi-plug powerstrip, as this may cause fire or electrical shock.

● Do not use power cords other than the providedpower cord, as this may result in a fire orelectrical shock.

● As a general rule, do not use extension cords.Using an extension cord may result in a fire orelectrical shock. If an extension cord must beused, however, untie the cord binding and insertthe power plug completely into the extensioncord outlet to ensure a firm connection betweenthe power and extension cords.

● Do not use power supplies with voltages otherthan 120 V AC, as this may result in a fire orelectrical shock.

● Always grasp the plug portion when unpluggingthe power plug. Pulling on the power cord mayexpose or snap the core wire, or otherwisedamage the power cord. If the cord is damaged,this could cause an electricity leak and result ina fire or electrical shock.

CAUTION

● Leave sufficient space around the power plugso that it can be unplugged easily. If objects areplaced around the power plug, you will beunable to unplug it in an emergency.

● Do not attempt to disassemble or modify themachine. There are high-temperature and high-voltage components inside the machine whichmay result in a fire or electrical shock.

● If the machine makes strange noises, or emitssmoke, heat or unusual smells, immediately turnOFF the main power switch and unplug thepower plug from the outlet. Then, contact yourservice representative. Continued use of themachine in this condition may result in a fire orelectrical shock.

● Do not use highly flammable sprays near themachine. If gas from these sprays comes intocontact with the electrical components insidethe machine, this may result in a fire or electricalshock.

● Do not drop paper clips, staples or other metalobjects inside the machine. Also, do not spillwater, liquids or inflammable substances(alcohol, benzene, paint thinner, etc.) inside themachine. If these items come into contact with ahigh-voltage area inside the machine, this mayresult in a fire or electrical shock. If these itemsare dropped or spilled inside the machine,immediately turn OFF the main power switchand unplug the power plug from the socket.Then, contact your service representative.

● Close the feeder gently to avoid catching yourhand, as this may result in personal injury.

● Do not touch the Finisher while making copies,as this may result in personal injury.

● Turn OFF the power switch for safety when themachine will not be used for a long period oftime such as overnight. Also, unplug the powerplug for safety when the machine will not beused for an extended period of time such asduring consecutive holidays.

● Do not place your hand in the part of the traywhere stapling is performed while a Finisher isattached, as this may result in personal injury.

● When cleaning the machine, first turn OFF themain power switch and unplug the power plug.Failure to observe these items may result in afire or electrical shock.

WARNING

Maintenance and Inspections

● Clean the machine using a firmly wrung-outcloth dampened with a mild cleansing detergent.Do not use alcohol, benzene, paint thinner orother inflammable substances. If inflammablesubstances come into contact with a high-voltage area inside the machine, this may resultin a fire or electrical shock.

● Do not throw a used toner cartridge into openflames, as this may ignite the toner remaininginside the cartridge and result in burns or a fire.

CAUTION ● Unplug the power plug from the outlet at leastonce a year, and clean the area around thebase of the plug’s metal pins to ensure all dustis removed. If dust accumulates in this area, itmay result in a fire.

● There are some areas inside the machine whichare subject to high voltages and high tempera-tures. Take adequate precautions whenperforming internal inspections to avoid burns orelectrical shock.

● When removing jammed paper or wheninspecting the inside of the machine, do notallow necklaces, bracelets or other metalobjects to touch the inside of the machine, asthis may result in burns or electrical shock.

● When removing copy paper which has becomejammed inside the machine, take care not toallow the toner on the jammed copy paper tocome into contact with your hands or clothing,as this will dirty your hands or clothing. If theybecome dirty, wash them immediately with coldwater. Washing with warm water will set thetoner and make it impossible to remove thetoner stains.

● When removing copy paper which has becomejammed inside the machine, remove thejammed copy paper gently to prevent the toneron the paper from scattering and entering youreyes or mouth. If toner enters your eyes ormouth, wash immediately with cold water andconsult a physician.

● When loading copy paper or removing jammedoriginals or copy paper, take care not to cut yourhands on the edges of the original or copypaper.

● When removing a used toner cartridge from thetoner supply port, remove the cartridge carefullyto prevent toner from scattering and enteringyour eyes or mouth. If toner enters your eyes ormouth, wash immediately with cold water andconsult a physician.

● Do not store toner cartridges or copy paper inplaces exposed to open flames, as this maycause the toner or copy paper to ignite andresult in burns or a fire.

CAUTION ● Keep toner and other consumables out of the reach of small children. If these itemsare ingested, consult a physician immediately.

■ Avoid locations which are subject to low temperaturesand low humidity, or high temperatures and high humidity.For example, avoid installing the machine near water faucets, hotwater heaters, humidifiers, air conditioners, heaters and stoves.

Avoid installing the machine in the following locations.

Installation Precautions

■ Avoid installing the machine in the direct sunlight.If unavoidable, shade the machine using curtains.

■ Avoid poorly ventilated locations.During use, the machine generates ozone. However, the amount ofozone generated is not enough to affect the human body.Nevertheless, if the machine is used for a prolonged period of timein a poorly ventilated room, or when making a large quantity ofcopies, be sure to ventilate the room to make the working environ-ment as comfortable as possible.

■ Avoid locations where a considerable amount of dustaccumulates.

■ Avoid locations where ammonia gas is emitted.■ Avoid locations near volatile flammables, such as

alcohol or paint thinner.■ Avoid locations which are subject to vibrations.

For example, avoid installing the machine on unstable floors orstands.

■ Avoid rapid changes in temperature.If the room in which the machine is installed is rapidly heated froma low temperature, condensation may form inside the machine.This can adversely affect copy quality or result in an inability toobtain copy images.

■ Avoid installing the machine near computers or otherprecision electronic equipment.Electrical interference and vibrations generated by the machineduring copying can adversely affect the operation of such equipment.

■ Avoid installing the machine near televisions, radios orother similar electronic equipment.The machine might interfere with sound and picture signal recep-tion, etc. Plug the machine into a dedicated power outlet andmaintain as much space as possible between the machine andother electronic equipment.

■ Plug the machine into a 120V AC outlet.

■ Do not plug other electrical equipment into the outlet towhich the machine is connected.

■ Do not plug the machine into a multi-plug power strip.Doing so might cause a fire.

■ The power cable may become damaged if it is oftenstepped on or heavy objects are placed on it. Continueduse of a damaged power cable can lead to an accident.

Select a safe power supply.

■ Some parts inside the machine are subject to highvoltages and temperatures. Take adequate precautionwhen inspecting the inside of the machine. Do not carryout any inspections not described in this manual.

Handling Precautions

■ Be careful not to drop any foreign objects such as paperclips or staples inside the machine. If a foreign objectcomes into contact with electrical parts inside themachine, it might cause a short circuit and result in afire or electrical shock.

■ If there is unusual noise or smoke, immediately turn themain power switch OFF, then call your service represen-tative. Using the machine in this state might cause a fireor electric shock. Also, avoid placing objects around theplug so that the machine can be unplugged whenevernecessary.

■ Do not turn the main power switch OFF or open thefront door during copying. This might result in paperjams.

■ To avoid danger of ignition, do not use flammableaerosol products near the machine.

NOTICE● If the original is not placed correctly, copies may not be made correctly depending on the copy mode you have set.

MEMO●LTR/STMT-size originals can be placed vertically or horizontally. However, the copy speed for vertically

There are three ways to place originals for copying. The method that you select willdepend on the size and type of the original that you are using, and the copy settings thatyou have programmed.

■Platen glassUse when copying books, originals on heavy paper, lightweight paper, and transparencies.

■FeederPlace a stack of originals in the feeder, and they are automatically fed to the platenglass for copying. Two-sided copies can also be automatically made from two-sidedoriginals.

■SADF trayTo make copies of heavyweight or lightweight originals, use the SADF tray placingyour originals one by one. When an original is inserted into the SADF tray, it isautomatically fed in and copied.

Placing an Original on the Platen GlassYou should use the platen glass when copying books, originals on heavy or thin paper, and transparen-cies, etc.

Lift up the feeder.1

Place your original.The surface that you want to copy must be placed face down.Align the corner of the original with the mark at the top left cornerof the platen glass.

NOTICE●When placing originals on the platen glass, the size

of the original is detected after the feeder has beenlowered. Be sure to lower the feeder beforecopying.

MEMO●Place books and other bound originals on the platen glass

in the same way.●When enlarging LTR/STMT-size originals to LGL/11"x17"-

size paper, place the original horizontally on the platenglass and align it with the LTRR or STMTR marks.

Gently lower the feeder.3

CAUTION●Close the feeder gently to avoid catching your

hand, as this may result in personal injury.●Do not press down hard on the feeder when using

the platen glass to copy thick books. This maydamage the platen glass.

Placing Originals in the FeederPlace a stack of originals in the feeder, and they are automatically fed to the platen glass for copying.Two-sided copies can also be automatically made from two-sided originals.

You can place the following originals in the original supply tray:• Weight : 13 to 110-lb index (50 to 200 g/m2) (Up to 163 g/m2 for two-sided copies of 11"x17" size only.)• Size : STMT, LTR, LGL, 11"x17" (STMT size originals can not be placed horizontally)• Tray capacity : 11"x17"/LGL-size: 50 (20-lb bond or 80 g/m2),

LTR/LTRR/STMT-size: 100 (20-lb bond or 80 g/m2)

NOTICE●Do not place the following types of originals in the feeder:

• Originals with tears or large binding holes• Severely curled originals or originals with sharp folds• Clipped or stapled originals• Carbon-backed paper or other originals which might not feed smoothly• Transparencies and other highly transparent originals

●Check the condition of originals which have been fed through the feeder many times. Originals which havebeen fed through the feeder many times can become folded or wrinkled and might not feed smoothly.

Adjust the slide guides to fit the size of the originals.1

NOTICE●After copying begins, do not add or remove originals.●Copies made using the Feeder may show black marks,

or marks that are not on the originals, caused by pencilpowder etc on the rollers. In such a case, circulate plainwhite originals (copy paper) through the Feeder toclean the dirt from the rollers.

MEMO●STMT-size originals must be placed vertically.●When enlarging STMT/LTR-size originals to LGL/

11"x17"-size paper, place your originals horizontally.●You can place different-size originals together in one

group in the feeder provided that the leading edge ofeach page is the same length and the originals are thesame thickness. (See "Feeding Different-size OriginalsTogether in the Feeder" on p. 3-15)

Using the SADF trayTo make copies of heavyweight or lightweight originals, use the SADF tray, placing your originals one byone. When an original is inserted into the SADF tray, it is automatically fed in and copied.

Using the Stack BypassTo make copies on transparencies or non-standard size copy stock, use the stack bypass. These copiescan not be made on paper fed from the paper drawers. They are made on copy stock placed in thestack bypass which is automatically fed into the machine.If you select the Stack Bypass mode with Paper Selection, you can make copies from the stack bypass.The following two types of paper can be copied using the stack bypass.

When copying an original onto the same size of paper at a 100% copy ratio, the periphery of the originalmay be cut slightly on the copy.However, if you set the Fit Image mode, the copied image is automatically reduced slightly based on thecopy paper size and copy image size. As a result, the entire original image is reproduced on the copywithout its periphery being cut off.

If you enter measurements for the original and desired copy images (or sheets), the machine willautomatically calculate and set the appropriate copy ratio. The following two Zoom Program modes areavailable.

MEMO●Sizes designated in millimeters are converted to the copy ratio (%) as follows:

Selecting Image QualityYou can adjust image quality to the level best suited to the quality of text or photo originals. Thefollowing three modes are available for adjusting image quality.

NOTICE● If you make copies of an original containing half-tones such as a printed photograph using the Photo

mode, moiré may occur. If this happens, you can soften this moiré effect by using the Sharpness mode.(See "Making Sharp Contrast Copies" on p. 3-31.)

●Combinations of these three modes cannot be set. If you select one of these modes, the previously setmode is canceled.

Reserving Copy Jobs While CopyingThe machine has two copy functions ( MEMORY

COPY A , MEMORYCOPY B ). While copying in one copy function, you can reserve

the other copy job using the other copy function.A reserved copy job immediately starts after the current job copy is completed, this allows you to savethe time required for scanning the reserved copy job’s originals.

If Memory Becomes Full During CopyingIf the memory becomes full during scanning of originals, the following messages appear on the touch-panel display.

Interrupting the Current Copy Job toMake Priority Copies (INTERRUPT MODE)

The Interrupt mode enables you to stop the current copy job long enough to make other prioritycopies. This mode comes in useful when making a rush copy during a continuous copy job.

What Are "Additional Functions"?When you turn the power ON or when you press the

key, the settings of this ma-chine return to their initial settings."Additional Functions" allows you to change initial settings by, for example, choosingwhether or not to use the initial values (defaults) for each of the modes supported onthis machine, or whether or not a mode is to be used. Defaults can also be changed bystoring or setting new values.This chapter describes items that can be set in the Custom Common Settings screen,Timer Settings screen, and Adjustment/Cleaning screen.

NOTICE●Depending on the options installed on your machine, some items may not need to be set. Such items will be

grayed out on the display. In the touch-panel illustrations of this manual, all items are shown as available.

If you press the control panel power switch to OFF, the display inthe touch-panel display goes out and the machine enters the Sleepmode.The Sleep mode helps to conserve power, but there will be a slightdelay when starting to use the machine next time.To reactivate the machine, press the power switch on the controlpanel. The Basic Features screen will appear on the touch-paneldisplay.

MEMO●Turn the control panel power switch OFF when not using your

machine for a prolonged period of time, for example at night.

Auto SleepIf the machine is not operated for a period of about 1 hour after copying has finished or after a keyingoperation, the control panel power switch automatically turns to OFF, and the machine enters the Sleepmode.To turn the power back ON, press the control panel power switch to ON.

MEMO●You can set the Auto Sleep Time from 10 minutes to 4 hours. (See "Setting the Time to Initiate Auto Sleep

after Finishing Operations," on p. 4-21.)

Energy Saver ModeWhen the copy functions of the machine will not be used for a long time, you can press the

key toput the machine in Energy Saver mode. This reduces the temperature of the machine’s fixing unit andthereby conserves energy. To start copying again, press the

Energy Saver

key once more. Pressing the MEMORYCOPY A key,

MEMORYCOPY B key, MAIL BOX key or PRINT•I/F key also reactivates the machine.

Auto Drawer SwitchingIf a paper drawer runs out of copy paper during copying, the machine automatically locates anotherpaper supply drawer loaded with the same size paper, and begins feeding copy paper from that paperdrawer.

MEMO●You can set whether or not a drawer is subject to Auto Drawer Switching for copy and printer functions.

(See "Setting a Drawer for Auto Drawer Switching," on p. 4-7.)

Auto Clear FunctionIf the machine is not operated for a period of about 2 minutes, it automatically returns to the Standardmode.

MEMO●You can set the Auto Clear Time from 1 to 9 minutes, in one-minute increments. You can also cancel this

function. (See "Setting the Time Taken for Display to Return to Basic Features Screen after FinishingOperations," on p. 4-22.)

Low-Power Mode TimeIf the copier is not operated (no keys are pressed) for a period of about 15 minutes after copies havebeen made or key operation performed, the copier automatically enters the Low-power mode. You caneasily change the Low-Power Mode Time. Pressing the MEMORY

COPY A key, MEMORYCOPY B key, MAIL BOX key or PRINT•I/F key also

reactivates the machine.

Paper Supply Indicator FunctionThis function shows the remaining amount of paper in each paper drawer when selecting the papersource or when paper in one cassette has run out during copying.There are four different indicators as shown below.

Face Down Copy OutputYou can have copied pages and printed pages output facing downward, in page order.

Setting Automatic Collate ON/OFFThis function allows automatic selection of the Collate mode when the original is placed in the feeder.This is helpful when making multiple copies, because the user does not need to remember to select theCollate mode.

MEMO●The initial setting is “ON”.●Turn Auto Collate OFF and set the Collate mode when you want to keep the print direction fixed when

making prints on papers with headers or punched holes, or when you want to make a large amount ofprints of one page when the Finisher-D1 is attached.To avoid forgetting to set the Collate mode in such cases, we recommend setting the Collate mode as thestandard mode. Loading Paper in the DrawersWhen the selected drawer runs out of copy paper during copying,the display on the left appears to indicate that the selected paperdrawer or stack bypass has run out of paper.

CAUTION●When loading copy paper, take care not to cut your hands on the

edges of the copy paper.

NOTICE●The message will also appear if the selected paper drawer is not

Adjusting a Paper Drawer to Hold a Different Paper SizeIf you want to load a new paper size in a paper drawer, follow the procedure described below to adjustthe paper drawer guides.You can adjust the paper drawers to hold the following standard paper sizes : 11" x 17", LGL, LTR andLTRR.

Squeeze the lever on the length guide as shown inthe figure and slide the length guide to align it withthe mark for the desired paper size.

still be made (LTR-size Canon Standard Chart). However,since this number may vary depending upon the original, it isrecommended that the toner be replaced as soon as possible.

tightly wrapped in its original package.

Black toner

When the "Add toner" message appears in the touch panel display, replacethe toner cartridge with a new toner cartridge which has been approved foruse with this machine. Only black toner can be used with this machine.

WARNING●Do not store copy paper in places exposed to open flames, as this

may cause the copy paper to ignite and result in burns or a fire.

WARNING●Never dispose of waste toner in a fire or incinerator. Doing so may

result in an explosion.●Store toner cartridges in a cool location away from direct sunlight.

The recommended storage conditions are as follows: temperaturebelow 86°F, and humidity below 80%.

●Do not store toner cartridges in places exposed to open flames, asthis may cause the toner to ignite and result in burns or a fire.

Replacing the Staple Cartridge

When the Finisher runs out of staples, the staple cartridge must bereplaced. The message on the left will appear in the touch panel display.Follow the procedure described below to replace the staple cartridge.

When printing data from a computer using this machine, you can first input the data to a registered MailBox, then print it whenever desired.The printing operation is performed from the main unit and enables you to avoid mixing the prints withcopy output. Also, you can set a password in the Mail Box, enabling you to make prints while preventingother persons from observing the data in the Mail Box.
