IMMANUEL’S INSIGHTS FEBRUARY 2013 In the movie Hope Floats, Birdee Calvert-Pruitt comes crashing back to her hometown of Smith- ville, Texas, after discovering that her husband is having an affair with her best friend, Connie. The entire town knows what happened to Birdee, after Connie dropped the bomb about the affair in front of Birdee on a national talk show. Growing up in Smithville, Birdee always carried herself with an arrogant pride, confident of her beauty and certain of her future success. Life brought her rebounding back to Smithville with very little self-esteem intact. The rest of the story…well, maybe you should rent the movie Hope Floats! Hope is an interesting thing. Too much hope, or hope dependent on the wrong person, can be the source of great heartache and disappointment. Too little hope; however, can have an even more debilitating effect. If we have no hope day by day life becomes a constant struggle just to make it through the day. We need hope to get us through the day, the week, the year. Espe- cially after loss and disappointment, hope is often the only thing we have to well hope for. In his short letters of First and Second Thessalonians, the Apostle Paul uses the word hope five times. That is not much, but it is the backbone that runs throughout these letters. Paul greets the Thessalonians with a prayer: “We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Thessalonians 1:3, NIV) After the church at Thessalonica was estab- lished, the church and its members endured great opposition and persecution from the local Jew- ish community. But unlike the church at Galatia, the Thessalonians not only endured the opposi- tion but were strengthened through it by their hope in the Lord Jesus Christ. IMMANUEL’S INSIGHTS FEBRUARY 2013

In the movie Hope Floats, Birdee Calvert-Pruitt comes crashing back to her hometown of Smith-ville, Texas, after discovering that her husband is having an affair with her best friend, Connie. The rest of the story…well, maybe you should rent the movie – Hope Floats!

Espe-cially after loss and disappointment, hope is often the only thing we have to – well – hope for.

In his short letters of First and Second Thessalonians, the Apostle Paul uses the word hope five times. That is not much, but it is the backbone that runs throughout these letters. Paul greets the Thessalonians with a prayer: “We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Thessalonians 1:3, NIV) After the church at Thessalonica was estab-lished, the church and its members endured great opposition and persecution from the local Jew-ish community. But unlike the church at Galatia, the Thessalonians not only endured the opposi-tion but were strengthened through it by their hope in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Starting Sunday, February 17th, the first Sunday in Lent, our sermon series will focus on the

“Hopeful Expectation” found in First and Second Thessalonians. Our Wednesday night focus for Lenten Midweek services will be a more traditional Lenten series on Jesus’ seven words from the cross; with the added twist of a chancel drama each week. Ash Wednesday is right around the corner on February 13

th. Join us for our midweek meal at 6:00 p.m., followed by Lenten Vespers

service at 7:00.

Also starting in February is our “Christian Caregiving – A Way of Life” class sponsored by our Stephen Ministry. Twelve members have committed to learning more about ex-tending our caregiving and offering the hope of Jesus Christ to others. Or as my wife Lisa put it: “The sessions are intended to start deepening your prayer life with others, helping others to share their faith journey and comfort others as Je-sus taught his disciples.”

Yes, Hope Floats, in your life and mine, and right here at Immanuel. 2 Thessa-lonians 2:16–17 (NIV) “May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.”

In Christ’s Loving Service,

Pastor Steve

SHROVE TUESDAY - FEBRUARY 12, 2013

Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Tuesday, Pancake Day, Mardi Gras, and Fat Tuesday) is the day preceding Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. Shrove Tuesday is linked to Easter, so its date changes on an annual basis.

The word shrove is the past tense of the English verb shrive, which means to ob-tain absolution for one’s sins by way of Confession and doing penance. Thus Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the Christians to be “shriven” before the start of Lent. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday).

On Shrove Tuesday, many Christians make a special point of self-examination, of considering what wrongs they need to repent, and what amendments of life or areas of spiritual growth they especially need to ask God's help in dealing with. Often they consult on these matters with a spiritual counselor, or receive shrift.

Shrove Tuesday is also called Fat Tuesday (in French, Mardi=Tuesday; gras=fat, as in "pate de foie gras", which is liver paste and very fatty), because on that day a thrifty housewife uses up the fats that she has kept around (the can of bacon drippings, or whatever) for cooking, but that she will not be using during Lent. Since pancakes are a standard way of using up fat, the day is also called Pancake Tuesday. In England, and perhaps elsewhere, the day is celebrated with pancake races. The contestants run a course while holding a griddle and flipping a pancake. Points are awarded for time, for number and height of flips, and number of times the pancake turns over. There are of course penalties for dropping the pancake. (Source: http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/LITCAL/ShroveTuesday.html)

STEWARDSHIP SNIPPETS

“Where do you see Jesus?”

Pastor asks this question frequently when any particular group returns from a mission trip or other organized activity when away from our home church (LYO, TZ Team, Camp Attendees, etc). Is this the only time this should be asked. Or should we routinely ask ourselves:

“Can others see Jesus through me?”

Being a disciple is not just for a select group of people or just one individual. It is for all Chris-tians, regardless of your financial, educational or professional abilities. As Christians, God has given each and every one of us some special and unique ability, talent, blessing to be shared with others in glory of Him. To be a disciple of Christ means being a good steward or servant.

Jesus set the example for us to follow that we are to serve and give our lives for others.

Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”

Participation in fellowship activities with one another,

Worshipping together,

Study of the Word, teaching and learning,

The sharing of your time with others, for others and for the church body,

The sharing of your ideas and talents, and

Reaching out to others to do the same

These are just a few examples of the numerous ways to be a disciple and serve Christ.

PLEASE notify the church of changes to your address or phone number. When mail-ings are returned to us, we are charged a fee!

FEBRUARY 13, 2013

Lent comes from the Latin word Quadragesima, meaning “fortieth”. It is an observance in the liturgical year of may Chris-tian denominations, lasting for approximately six weeks leading up to Easter. In most Western denominations Lent is taken to run from Ash Wednesday to Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) or to Easter Eve.

The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer - through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual com-memoration of Holy Week, marking the death and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events of the Passion of Christ on Good Friday, which then culminate in the celebration on Easter Sun-day of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. FEBRUARY RECIPE IDEAS

A lot is happening this month in February. Lent starts and it is Valentine’s Day

Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras prior to Lent:

Lent starts on Ash Wednesday. Traditionally, prior to the 40 days of Lent (or days of fasting) starting, cooks used up all the "naughty foods" (such as butter, eggs, and milk) Shrove Tuesday was also known as "pancake day". There is no English word for 'shrove’ other than it has the understood meaning of pancake in the term Shrove Tuesday. Academics trace shrove to the past tense of the verb shrive - which means absolution for one's sins. So Shrove Tuesday was a way to prepare to be "shriven" before the start of Lent where one would eat "plainer foods”. In the past people would go to church and ask for absolution and then go home, celebrate and eat the last of their luxury foods in their pantry before starting their penance during Lent. This is where the pancakes came in with the use of milk, butter, eggs and sugar.

One does not hear as much about Shrove Tuesday as it has been overshadowed by Mardi Gras (Mardi is French for Tuesday and Gras means fat) or even Carnevale (good-bye meat). Both of which display much over indulgence of everything in party form and has taken on a much more secular nature.

One way to enjoy some of the old Shrove Tuesday tradition is to come out to the church on Sat-urday, February 9 the weekend prior to Lent starting to enjoy the Aebelskiver and Frikadeller supper hosted by the Danish Dolls. Then, if you find that you still are in need of ridding your house of "naughty ingredients", try a recipe from some of our German Lutherans and fry up a batch of fastnachts

Fastnachts

1 C. lukewarm milk 1 package yeast 3/4 C. soft butter 2 T. white sugar 6 whole eggs 6 C. white flour 2 tsp salt

Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm milk. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Make a well in the cen-ter of the flour. Pour dissolved yeast and all the other remaining ingredients into the well. Mix all until no longer sticky. Cover and allow to rise until double. Punch down and then rest for 10 min-utes (while you are resting for 10 minutes, allow the dough to rest also). Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick and cut into circles or strips. Fry in deep fat/oil until light brown. While still hot roll in sugar (white granulated or powdered sugar).

Fun Valentine Foods for Kids

Take any heart or other Valentine shaped cookie cutters. Cut out ready-made pizza dough in various shapes and top with favorite pizza toppings. Bake as directed.

Cut out bread, meat and cheese for valentine sandwiches.

Valentine Punch: 1 scoop of raspberry or pineapple sherbet in a cup. Mix equal portions of pink lemonade with lemon-lime soda-or-equal portions of cranberry juice and ginger ale. Pour over the sherbet.

FUN FACTS ABOUT GROUNDHOGS – FEBRUARY 2,

The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs from 12 to 15 pounds. Punxsutawney Phil weighs about 20 pounds and is 22 inches long. Groundhogs are covered with coarse grayish hairs (fur) tipped with brown or sometimes dull red. They have short ears, a short tail, short legs, and are surprisingly quick. Their jaws are exceptionally strong.

A groundhog's diet consists of lots of greens, fruits, and vegetables and very little water. Most of their liquids come from dewy leaves.

A groundhog can whistle when it is alarmed. Groundhogs also whistle in the spring when they begin courting.

Insects do not bother groundhogs and germs pretty much leave them alone. They are resistant to the plagues that periodically wipe out large numbers of wild animals. One reason for this is their cleanliness.

Groundhogs are one of the few animals that really hibernate. Hibernation is not just a deep sleep. It is actually a deep coma, where the body temperature drops to a few degrees above freezing, the heart barely beats, the blood scarcely flows, and breathing nearly stops.

Young Groundhogs are usually born in mid-April or May, and by July they are able to go out on their own. The size of the litter is 4 to 9. A baby groundhog is called a kit or a cub.

A groundhog's life span is normally 6 to 8 years. Phil receives a drink of a magical punch every summer during the Annual Groundhog Picnic, which gives him 7 more years of life.
