IMMANUEL’S INSIGHTS MARCH 2013

I heard a song the other day I had not heard in a long, long time. And I heard it – of all places – at the Faith Sound concert here at Immanuel early in February. As is Faith Sound’s tradition, when members of the group perform at their home church they get to be the featured performer and do a solo. Chancey Plagman, one of our own, broke out in a well done version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Chancey introduced the song by saying that it was not a song from his own generation, but many of us present would likely remember it! Well done Chancey!

Here is some background about “Bridge Over Troubled Water” from the website Songfacts.com:

Paul Simon wrote this about providing comfort to a person in need. It started as a modest Gospel hymn but became more dramatic as he put it together. Speaking in the documentary The Making of Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon said, "I have no idea where it came from. It came all of the sudden. I remember thinking, 'This is considerably better than I usually write." Simon wrote this song with just two verses, considering the song "a little hymn." (The third verse about the “Silver Girl” was added later on.)

“Hopeful Expectation – Thessalonians” is our Sunday morning theme throughout Lent. In every chapter of First and Second Thessalonians Paul carries out his theme of hopeful expectation in the Second Coming of Christ. The letters were written to new Christians who, due to the severe persecu-tion they were enduring, were wondering if they had possibly missed Christ’s Second Coming. Paul’s message was both simple and profound: “When Jesus returns there is no way you are going to miss it. Everyone in the world will know! So have hope – hope in the Lord – for he is coming again!”

Meanwhile Jesus is that bridge, a bridge of faith, that keeps us going day by day over troubled waters or calm. On the bridge of the cross Jesus already laid himself down for you and me. So have hope – hope in the Lord – for Jesus has died for you!

1 Thessalonians 4:13–14 (NIV) “Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We be-lieve that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Je-sus those who have fallen asleep in him.” And verse 18: “Therefore encourage each other with these words.”

Come join up for this fun event! Immanuel Lutheran will be hosting our friends with Pork Belly Ventures once again!

Five years ago we open our church and our hearts to this group and those that joined us on that day were blessed by the stories and the fellowship. Riders will begin arriving at Immanuel by 10am on Sunday and will depart in the early morning hours on Monday. We will need pie bak-ers, meal service, grounds keeping, people monitoring, greeters along with many people simply come enjoy the event. Watch the Insights and the bulletin for more information coming soon! There is something for EVERYONE! Thanks!

Each year, the Sunday School students select ways that they can contribute (either financially or through service) to organizations or individuals that are in need. This year, our students are focused on helping people who live in Haiti.

Several years ago, our students adopted two Compassion International children. One of those chil-dren – a young girl named Cassandra – lives in Haiti. As you may recall, this country was struck by a devastating earthquake in 2010, leaving hundreds of thousands of people homeless. And so when we heard of an organization that is doing amazing work in this country, we thought it may be meaningful for our students to focus their “mission work” on helping this group of volunteers. This small organization is called Global Compassion Network, and several of its members live right here in Iowa. One of their main projects has involved a partnership with Sukup Manufacturing Co. to bring relief to families without homes. Using highly modified grain bins, what they call a SafeTHome, they have been able to provide about 60 homes in the Village of Hope in Haiti.

We want to build a SafeTHome! We hope you will help.

The offering that our students bring each Sunday is going toward this effort.

Many things that we take for granted in our daily lives, are things that children in Haiti have never had. And so to help our students be aware of our many blessings, and to help boost our offerings toward our goal, we are giving the students a weekly task. Each week they are to count the number of the "assigned item" that they have, and bring a coin (whatever they feel is appropriate) for each of the items that they have. So far, students have brought offering based upon: pairs of socks, video games, T-shirts, pairs of shoes, jackets/sweatshirts, and we have collected over $600.00!! Great work everyone!

Anyone who is interested is encouraged to join the students of Immanuel in reaching our goal. There is a donation box near the "SafeTHome" model just outside of the Fellowship Hall.

Conwell Larson, who lives near Denison, is one of the individuals working with the Global Compas-

sion Network in Haiti to build the Village of Hope. We are excited that he will be coming to our

church to talk with the students about the work that they have been doing. He has many pictures

and stories that he will be able to share with the students so that they can understand more clearly

how their offerings are helping others who desperately need it. Anyone who is interested is invited

to join us for this presentation. He will be here on Sunday, March 17, and will begin at 10:15.

BOOKS & DVDs: Discover what you can find in your library. There is a great collection of kid’s and family DVDs.

HEAVEN: Several “Heavenly” books for adults and children are found in your library to enrich the Lenten theme. Look for them on the cart by the library.

EASTER: Many books and DVDs for adults and children are displayed on the table and cart near the library for Easter. Please take time to enjoy them.

MISSING: There are still several missing DVDs and books. Please remember to check them out on the clipboard. It’s easy to forget to return things, but if we know who has them we can remind you.

SPRING CLEANING: Since VHS tapes are seldom checked out anymore, we are cleaning our shelves and you are welcome to the video tapes FREE or any donation is appreciated. We also will have books on the table that are outdated or there are duplicate titles.

IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL COMMITTEE

MEETING MINUTES, FEBRUARY 18, 2013

Attendees: Pastor Steve Chellew, Cheryl Laubach, Dave Monson, Dave Pedersen, Angie Madsen, Deb Schechinger, Gaige Lytle, Dr. Stephen Allen, Kris Olson-Harmon, Sandy Nelsen, Teresa Johnson, Seth Jo-hannsen, Darin Haake, Bert Hillers, John Taggs. Also present: Mary Taggs, Rick Chipman, Ken Vorm, Julie Vorm, Don Schmidt, and Dorothy Schmidt.

Absent: Mike Jarrell, Patti Kumm. President Gaige Lytle called the meeting to order with Pastor Steve giving the opening prayer.

Motion by Teri Johnson, seconded by Sandy Nelsen to approve the agenda.

Mary Taggs presented information in regards to Immanuel hosting a group of Ragbrai riders Sunday, July 21 to Monday morning, July 22. In the past 756 people were hosted and fed a meal resulting in approximately $12,000 income for To His Glory. This year is expected to host approximately 1,100 people. After discussion, motion by Seth Johannsen, seconded by Teri Johnson to approve Immanuel to host this particular Ragbrai group. Motion carried.

Julie Vorm presented information from the Anniversary Committee to hold the Immanuel Centennial celebration the weekend of August 9-10, 2014. Also for the approval of funds when a decision is made as to down pay-ments on event venue and caterer. After discussion, motion by Dave Monson, seconded by Bert Hillers for Centennial celebration August 9-10, 2014 and for funds as needed. Motion carried.

Rick Chipman presented information for request of separate checking account for Tanzania Committee. He has already extensively reviewed information with Mike Jarrell and Melanie Ohms and they are in agreement that this would be of a benefit for all parties involved. Reasons presented to Council. After discussion, motion by Seth Johannsen, seconded by Angie Madsen to approve Tanzania Committee to have own separate check-ing account. Motion carried.

Motion by Teri Johnson, seconded by Sandy Nelson to accept the minutes from the last council meeting. Mo-tion carried.

In Mike’s absence, Pastor presented the treasurer’s report. Property expenses were higher due to recent car-pet cleaning. Pastor explained to new members of council how to read the flow sheets. Motion by Stephen Al-len, seconded by Teri Johnson to approve the treasurer’s report. Motion carried.

The committees gave their reports. Both Worship and Stewardship committees reported that the Reveal survey is not recommended for Immanuel. Mission and Outreach have plans to place more information in the newslet-ter for opportunities for members. Education met today and reported that Sunday School has already raised $873 in four Sundays for “Homes for Haiti”. It takes approximately $7,000 per home. More information is on the church website. Discussion in regards to a VBS director, an Okoboji program is too costly. The committee is considering monthly Family Summer activities in place of VBS. Senior graduation brunch will be May 5, 2013. Dave Pedersen with Fellowship passed around a card and photo received from Robbie and Emily Cundy.

Property committee reported that it is receiving bids on replacing the furnace and air conditioning units for the chapel and office area. Painting of the fellowship hall is planned for March 2 tentatively or March 9. Need help-

ers, especially “trimmers” Bids are being looked into for improved lighting in the parking lot. The fixtures are outdated and too dark. Carpets were cleaned in the front of the sanctuary, narthex and hallway. They are consulting with the city in regards to our current sewer system and needs. Half of one of the furnaces in the sanctuary quit working this past week but when it was checked out, it is now running and no problems found.

Pastor’s report given. Immanuel continues to have more interested new members.

New Business: Council will serve the Lenten supper on February 27. Sandy Nelsen, Kris Olson-Harmon, and Bert Hillers have been coordinating this. Serving lasagna, salad, bread and dessert. A sign up sheet was passed around for the remaining items needed.

Information given for the upcoming LCMC Church Council Workshop on Saturday, February 23. Stephen Allen is attending. Any other interested members wanting to attend are to see Pastor following this meeting.

Computer in the chapel for the projector quit working and it was more expensive to repair rather than replace it with a new. An entire new package with special video card including software upgrade was approved by Ex-ecutive Committee and purchased. Awaiting its arrival.

Discussion about new Capital Improvement Fund policy. The policy would clarify use of General Fund versus Capital Improvement Fund/Account for physical plant maintenance and expenditures. Each council member received a written copy of the proposed policy for review. Seth Johannsen motioned, seconded by John Taggs to table this until the April council meeting. Motion carried.

The American Red Cross has provided Immanuel with a defibrillator for emergency use. The fire chief from Earling will come and certify up to 20 people in CPR, basic first aid and the use of the defibrillator for approxi-mately $20 per person. This will be pursued for any council member and other Immanuel members that would like to attend.

Thank you and welcome to all new council members. New members will meet with pastor after the meeting to receive keys, tour of the church and duties as council person on duty.

WATER

“When the well is dry, we know the worth of water” – Benjamin Franklin

As we reported in the past, there have been several attempts with regular well-drilling equipment that have been unsuccessful due to the depth of water beyond a layer of rock bed.

A company out of Iringa that has a heavy-duty and deeper capacity was contact to run a test and see if it maybe be viable. There were no guarantees but an agreement was made to give it a try.

During the week of February 11-15, the “Big Iringa Rig” came to town. Rick was getting frequent updated reports of the progress with the first call coming in at 3:00 a.m. on Monday morning. They started close to one of the schools in Kidugala. They did get through the rock bed and fi-nally started to get some water at 60 meters. Permission given to keep drilling! They then went on to 100 meters and were successful. This location will sustain a hand pump.

While this particular equipment was there, permission was given to try for a second well by the health center. Again, it made it through the rock bed, more phone calls and a push was made to keep finding water. The battle cry of “Drill Baby Drill!!!” roared out. Water was hit at 40 meters and they kept going down to 60 meters. This location will sustain an electric pump and tower.

Now the residents of the Kidugala area have access two good central locations with better ac-cess for clean water.

Just to understand how deep these wells were drilled: The 60 meter well is 196 feet and the 100 meter well is 328 feet!!

SUMMER SHORT-TERM LAY MISSIONARY TRIP

This year’s trip will be taken the end of July into the first of August. Travel will be completed prior to anyone having to be back to school. This is a chance to take a leap of faith and get a peak at what surprises God can have in store for you. Build new relationships with our family of fellow Christians both here at Immanuel and in Kidugala.

Don’t let the financial cost keep you from looking into it, there is some financial assistance for Im-manuel members.

It doesn’t cost anything to ask - There is no commitment by asking - No question is a dumb question. You will never know the answer if you don’t ask it.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall……..

Another morning has dawned. You trudge into the bathroom and there you stand before the mirror. Great! There it is - a new wrinkle, a stray-gray eye-brow, Argh! Imperfection! Bah humbug! “What am I going to do with THIS face today?” As a Christian, not every day starts (or even ends) as a great super-sonic day.

Take a moment to stop and think, as a Christian, even when things are not “on top of the world”, we have Christ in our lives to guide us through those issues. So splash the water on your face and take a look again. Hmm, it wasn’t miracle water, there is still that wrinkle and the wayward eyebrow. Oh yeah and a crooked nose or crooked tooth. But, the face of Christ is there. Forget about “what am I going to do with this face” but consider “what am I going to allow Christ to do in my life and in the life of others today?”

As we walk out the door and interact with people, WHO will they see today?

ILCW BOARD MEETING, FEBRUARY 14, 2013

Immanuel Lutheran Church Women met Thursday, February 14, 2013, in the church library. The following members were present: Myrna Havick, Kathy Voge, Carolyn Hursey, Sandy Nelsen, Deb Schechinger, Joanne Christensen and Sally Simdorn.

The meeting was called to order at 6 p.m. by Chairperson Myrna Havick. Sandy Nelsen gave the devotions and prayer.

In Julie Vorm’s absence, Kathy Voge read the secretary’s report. Carolyn Hursey moved to ac-cept the minutes as read. Joanne Christensen seconded. Motion carried.

Kathy Voge presented the treasurer’s report. Balance of $2,934.79. Joanne Christensen moved to approve the treasurer’s report. Deb Schechinger seconded. Motion carried. No bills were presented.

Joanne Christensen reported that the Action Committee didn’t meet in February. There was dis-cussion regarding encouraging ILCW members to participate. The committee meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 1:30-3:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

Community Committee report given by Sally Simdorn. Elm Crest’s birthday party is scheduled for March 18. Bingo will be held April 8 at Salem Home. Goodie bags will be distributed in May.

Hospitality committee – four get well cards and one sympathy card were sent.

Kitchen - It was reported the dishwasher soap distributor is up and running.

Joanne Christensen received information from New Hope and Global regarding their needs. Put-ting together hospice kits was discussed. Deb Schechinger with visit with Kate Schechinger re-garding possibly tying in hospice kits with the Sunday school youth Haiti project.

Old Business –

Callers are still needed for Groups C and D.

Membership books are in progress. Suggested that honorary members either be included in the alphabetical list or this group be placed first for ease in locating their names.

Discussion on date for Christmas Tea was held. Tabled until the March meeting.

There was more discussion regarding an event that includes the working members of ILCW. The feeling is that we need to have such an event but no decision as to what type at this time.

Pies for Elm Crest’s chicken supper are to be delivered on the 19 of February.

Elaine Miller was voted in as co-chair of ILCW.
