a visit to the territory in the dry season is a must. the weather is nothing short of perfect for almost 6 months of the year. the average temperature for may and June are below, but please remember to pack a light jacket or cardigan as evenings can be a little cool. well if you are local they can!

darwin, has two very distinct seasons clearly divided by “wet/dry” seasons. it is consistently hot and sunny year-round. the ‘wet season’ runs from november to april and can have the most spectacular displays of thunderstorms. if you want to stay dry and avoid the rains, may through september is generally the best time to visit darwin. the downside being, that during the dry season, it is very popular with tourists so accommodation can be a problem if it is left too late.

many hours of extensive research and hard work have culminated in the release of the history of st John ambulance (nt) and its volunteer service, looking at the people and events that have shaped us into the organisation we are today. this challenging project involved investigating an overwhelming amount of material with countless hours spent looking through old newspaper articles on microfilm and archival files and photos from all over the territory to bring together the most comprehensive and accurate account possible. Frank says “producing this history was an exciting adventure and well worth the many hundreds of hours. of effort”.

the title, awkward hours and awkward Jobs was discovered when researching the st John ambulance brigade’s activities in the aftermath of Cyclone tracey. it is taken from the ambulance crews’ description of those punishing days and nights as they worked long hours under the most extreme conditions.

Join us at the opening reception to be held at Government house for the launch of the book and the chance to talk with Frank about the journey of bringing the history of st John to the page.

about the author - frank dunstan mstj

Frank dunstan originally came to the northern territory as a four year old lad in 1946 and so began his long love affair with the territory. he then left for a number of years before returning to darwin in 1972 to work in the mining, construction and power industries which took him to every corner of the territory from remote communities in arnhem land to desert communities south and west of alice springs. upon retirement in 1999, Frank’s desire to do volunteer work led to his

involvement as a volunteer firefighter before coming upon st John ambulance after attending a First aid course. he fully committed to his new role as divisional superintendent at humpty doo and was rewarded for his hard work and dedication by being named adult volunteer of the year in 2002. Frank returned to his volunteer work with the berry springs volunteer bushfire brigade, during which time he attended to hundreds of fires and was deployed to assist at the victorian bushfires in december 2006 and January 2007 and continued fire fighting until the age of 70. Frank returned to st John ambulance (nt) as an affiliate member in 2006 and started a divisional newsletter that evolved into vollie news, a much loved and informative bulletin for volunteers across the territory. Frank was awarded the title of operational support member of the year in 2010 and was admitted to the order of st John as member in 2011. Frank is an ordinary bloke without qualifications or experience in writing, who took on the challenge of bringing st John’s history to life so that it could be enjoyed by everyone.
