How did you become a fan of racing? When I was little my family moved from Texas to Lexington, and living in Lexington you can’t help but become a racing fan. My dad liked to wager a bit, and we would go to Keeneland on occasion; it’s a great environment and a great introduction to racing.

When did you buy your first horse? In 2009, a NY-bred by Thunder Gulch named Thunder Chief who was a very nice horse that had three wins and now has a nice second career as Leah’s pony.

How many horses do you have in training?I currently have 15 horses in training, including four babies that have yet to race.

Do you plan to grow your stable in the coming years? We’ll see what comes, but this feels like a good size at this point. We’ve tried to focus on upgrading the quality of horse we’ve bought each year, and I think that’s shown in our results. I also have an interest in the breeding side of the business and would like to keep a few broodmares. Our mare Well Kept, who was a nice sprinter, is currently in foal to Street Sense.

Are there any parallels between investing and the racing business? In a sense, they both center around taking risk and earning some return. In investing, that return is strictly monetary; in racing the return is more intangible. It’s more about the excitement of going to the track to see your horse run and, with a lot of luck, win. But that excitement’s worth a lot.

Are race days a big social event for you? For me, the track is a great place to have a couple of drinks, do some wagering and take in the races. For the big races we get a crew out--even my wife shows up. I’ll have my extended family up in Saratoga for the GI Test S. this year, so that will be fun. It’s the Wednesday afternoons in February at Aqueduct that it’s tougher to generate a party atmosphere. On those days, I twist Leah’s arm to have a beer or two with me--luckily, it works every time.

How does the auction process work for you? I’ll go through the catalogue looking for pedigrees I like and, more importantly, can afford, and Leah will do the same. It’s easy to like a page with a hot sire and a Grade I-winning mare; but we can’t bid competitively for a horse with that pedigree if he looks good. We’re looking for horses whose sires may be slightly out of favor, or for sires that can improve the mare compared to what she’s been bred to in the past. And we both go to the sales for the most part and look at the horses’ conformation. The whole process, down to the sale itself, is a good time.

You’ve bought horses both as yearlings and as 2-year-olds in training; do you prefer one over the other? We’ve had more success with the yearlings we’ve bought, so my opinion

is a bit biased. But in general, it’s a trade off between getting more pedigree for the dollar at the yearling sales, and being able to see the horse move over the track at the breeze shows. I’d rather get more pedigree and be able to have more control over the process leading up to the start of their racing career. Having said that, we’re still active at the 2-year-old sales, and it’s a great way for someone getting into the business to experience the auction process and have a horse that could make a start in a short period of time.

How did you and Leah start doing business together? I had been involved with a New Jersey-based stable named Sea Horse Stable that had a good group of people, but at the time not a great deal of success on the track. We were racing only at Monmouth, but Felice Busto, who ran Sea Horse, had horses with Leah in the past, and she introduced us one day at the track.

When did you know Sweet Reason was a good one? Well, one of the fascinating things about the game of horse racing is how quickly your fortunes can change. It felt like we were struggling to get a win at the time...any win. My wife and I hadn’t made it to Saratoga yet and were home watching her first race on TV. Sweet Reason was off the screen for much of the race, and I was yelling--probably at Leah through the TV screen--and then she made that incredible run from 18 lengths back to win by six going 5 1/2 furlongs. So I knew she was something special. It’s not really Leah’s style to get a horse cranked up to win first out, more to use it as a learning experience. So when she won like that, it was clear she had a big future.

What’s your favorite memory at the track? If I had a better memory, I’d tell you about the first time I cashed a ticket. Unfortunately, I have no recollection of that. Much more recently it would easily be Sweet Reason’s win in the Acorn. She spent the winter here in New York and she just didn’t fare that well in the cold weather. Her first couple starts this year weren’t what we had come to expect from her, but she had turned a corner in her works going into the Acorn. Our expectations were high, and she didn’t disappoint. Plus I cashed a ticket [Sweet Reason was 9-1].

How did you become involved in racing? My mother was a jockey. However, as she tells the story, she had 3 children and only one with no interest in horses and horse racing. That was me. Looking back, horses and horse racing were something that were so much a part of my life growing up that I took it for granted while in the pursuit of something more exciting, less mundane. It didn’t take me long to realize that this

is just about as exciting as it gets.

What are some of the most thrilling moments you have experienced in your career so far?Sometimes winning a $5,000 claiming race gave me more of a thrill than winning a graded stakes. The thrill comes from defying odds, and, for me anyway, knowing that the people who worked with a particular horse pooled their energies to get that horse to perform at his/her best and then watching that horse reward you with a 100% effort. There have been too many thrills to name

one.

Keeneland Race Course n Lexington, Kentucky

Q & A with Donna Brothers Former Jockey, NBC Sports Analyst & Conference Panelist

What would you say to someone interested in becoming a Thoroughbred owner?Ask lots of questions from people with experience in the game. Too many come into horse racing feeling like they’ve been “lucky” in business (or even gambling) and they can carry that “luck” into horse racing and have success. It’s just not that easy. And there are so many great people in horse racing who are willing to share what they have learned. But inquire from lots of people, not

just one or two.

Why did you agree to participate in the inaugural Thoroughbred Owner Conference?I love horse racing and feel like it sometimes gets a bad wrap from some media sources. Anything I can do to help people see the beautiful side of it-and answer any questions they may already

have-is something I’m always happy to do.

Why should a current or potential owner attend the conference?I can’t think of a better opportunity to tap into such a deep well of knowledge and experience. This is not the kind of learning opportunity that comes along every day-or ever before.

SAYING GOODBYE By Liesl King The countdown has begun. Tomorrow, Africa'srichest race, the G1 Vodacom Durban July over 2200meters, will be run at Greyville Racecourse in SouthAfrica before a capacity crowd of about 55,000 people.

Sixteen runners will vie for achance to etch their namesin history. Let's face it--it=s abig deal. Dead heats, narrowdefeats, victory from thewidest draw-- this race has away of creating thatstomach-churning feeling ofdrama, excitement and sheerdespair, all rolled into one. Trackwork yesterday atthe nearby Summerveldtraining center was a hive ofactivity as trainers anxiouslywatched their stars goingthrough their paces. Itwasn't the big guns, however, who caught myeye, impressive as CaptainAmerica (SAf) (Captain Al{SAf}) and Futura (SAf)

(Dynasty {SAf}) were. It was an expression of infinitesadness on the face of jockey Sean Cormack as he satquietly, reins dangling, on the tiny Beach Beauty (SAf)(Dynasty {SAf}) as she stared down the track. BeachBeauty had stopped on the way to the chute, andCormack was in no hurry to chase her along. There they sat, observing the kingdom they had ruledover for so long, sharing the moment one more time. You see, Beach Beauty has had a way of creeping intopeople's hearts from the day she was a gangly, smallyearling on Trevor Armitage's farm. By then-freshmansire Dynasty out of the Capture Him mare Suncoast,Beach Beauty's pedigree was not earth shattering, andon top of that, she was small. Yet the filly wasinquisitive, gentle and, above all, she loved people. When Trevor's son Mark died suddenly at the age of40, a close friend decided to form a syndicate to race ahorse in his honor. Trevor, Mark's widow and threeclose friends came together to form the ShanksSyndicate, >Shanks= being Mark's nickname. Theydecided that the horse they needed did not have to be aworld-beater. It had to be a kind horse, a horse theycould cuddle, a horse who reminded them of Mark. Trevor knew that back home he had the perfectcandidate. A small, light-framed, friendly yearling fillynamed Beach Beauty by Mark's daughter, Kate. BeachBeauty was sent to Dennis Drier for training, where shecontinued to be a very kind, gentle, easy-to-train filly.

Beach Beauty, however, had not been told that shewasn't required to try too hard at racing--she was thereto put the pieces of a grieving family back together. Six victories, including three at the graded level, SeanCormack teamed up with Beach Beauty. They were twoof a kind, and it was a match made in heaven. BeachBeauty is as gentle as a kitten.

However, when her racing saddle is placed on herback, the small filly turns into mean racing machine, with the heart of a lion and an indomitable will to win.Gone are the soft eyes and gentle quizzical expression. Cont. p7

Cont. from p6

In its place is a look of fierce determination as, earsflat against her head and with fire in her eyes, shedares any horse to beat her. Few do. Cormack is madeof the same cloth--gentle and modest. He is a toughcompetitor in the saddle, however, never giving an inchand with a steely determination to pass the post first. Together, Beach Beauty and Cormack have won theG1 Paddock S. twice, the G1 Klawervlei Majorca andthe G1 Garden Province S., South Africa's premierweight-for-age contest for fillies and mares. For threelong years, the tiny filly with the heart of a lion haspinned her ears back and stormed through field afterfield, with Cormack gently guiding her. Tomorrow theyline up in the Garden Province to defend their crownand, should they win, there won't be a dry eye in thehouse. Beach Beauty has not only healed Mark's family, she has also crept into the public's hearts. Yet, her timeis limited, and Saturday may very well be her last race,as the breeding paddocks of Drakenstein Stud beckon. And that means that Cormack will no longer be ableto swing his long legs over her back, crouch down lowover her withers as her mane whips him in the face andpat her in delight as she once again storms into thelead, teeth bared and fire in her eyes.

No longer will he be able to sit on her back and justgaze out over the vast expanse of the KwaZulu Natalhills they know so well. Their time is short--soon hemust say goodbye, and that thought is almostunbearable. Yesterday, in the early morning light, BeachBeauty stopped and dawdled, almost as if she wasbuying more time for the pair of them. Cormack, withan unbearable sadness etched on his face, sat quietly, letting her be. Click here to share this story
