Executive Perspective with ALLAN PETER, ACCM, CMAA Federal Secretary8

The new Federal Award has settled inover the past 12 months and Fair WorkAustralia will conduct its two-yearreview in 2012. One matter the ACTU will beaddressing during the review processwill be the redundancy provisions.

Throughout 2010, the CMAA’s Industrial Relations sectionresolved a number of disputes with the majority being infavour of our managers. The matters where we were not successful involved themanager not having an Award Flexibility Agreement - orany agreement - in place. Some of these managers had been associated with theirclubs for long periods and had a good working relationshipwith their Board. However, changes to the Board meant that thoserelationships changed. It is to a manager’s benefit to ensure you have a writtenagreement with your club so that - if the relationshipchanges - you know where you stand. One case involves a construction development failing aftera company was appointed by the Board to carry out thework. The Board stated they did not receive correct informationfrom the manager. The Board is suing the manager. The developer, also, is suing the club. Through our legal representatives, Eastern CommercialLawyers, we have been able to convince the insurancecompany that the manager should be covered by the club’sDirectors and Officers liability. This case could escalate and, as an Association, we arekeeping close watch on the hearings. This case also highlights the importance of having a legalrepresentative check all contracts with developers andcontractors.Another area of concern is where club credit cards areused by managers or presidents and the information fromthese credit cards is not properly checked and approved atmonthly Board meetings.

Following the Association’s Strategic Planning meeting lastJuly, and representations from the Queensland and VictoriaDivisions, the CMAA Federal Executive and CMAA FederalCouncil agreed to expand the role of the Federal Secretaryto assist in the Industrial Relations area and provide moreinput to Governments - particularly in Victoria andQueensland. In Queensland, the CMAA has Justin McGurgan, ManagingDirector of Academy Hospitality Australia, acting for theAssociation as Membership Liaison Officer promoting CMAA-CMDA services and membership benefits. Justin will handle membership issues for Queenslandmembers and liaise with Queensland Zone Committees andreport to the Federal Secretary. The Association also will seek to be represented onGovernment committees in Queensland.Victoria has a new State Government and the CMAA isseeking a seat on the state’s new Gambling Policy Researchand Coordination Committee and other industry-relatedGovernment committees. On the Industrial side, our capabilities will includeconsulting services to managers and their clubs on a fee-for-service basis.

The CMAA is strongly committed to assist Clubs Australia inensuring the correct message on pre-commitment isconveyed to all stakeholders. The CMAA organised a meeting with the ACTU and otherstakeholders – the LHMU, AHA and Clubs Australia - toadvance our concerns on how this measure will impact onindustry jobs and what assistance the ACTU could offer. ACTU President Ged Kearney was genuinely concerned onceit was pointed out the repercussions of this proposed Bill.Ms Kearney asked if the CMAA could forward thisinformation to the ACTU to properly evaluate the situstion. Once completed, Josh Landers from ClubNSW and I willagain speak to the ACTU’s Full Board. We have spoken to other stakeholders, such asWoolworths, seeking a combined effort in this matter.

The Association has advertised the role of the ExecutiveOfficer and trust we can find a suitable replacement forTerry Condon, who retires in August.

Association’s Industrial Relations agenda full and busy

10 The Executive Officer’s Desk with TERRY CONDON, CCM

In the February issue of the ClubManagement in Australia we reportedon the horrific damage done by CycloneYasi in Queensland and the subsequent

flooding throughout other areas in Australia. As usual, clubs were first to show their generosity with over$1 million dollars pledged to the Queensland Premier’sFund. Many clubs joined up the “Adopt a Club”program started by Clubs Queensland bysupplying much-needed furniture andequipment to these needy clubs.Travelling around the country to theCMAA Zone Meetings during February it ispleasing that all zones are using themoney raised at these meetings tosupport the Premier’s Fund. Well done toall.

March 23 will be a watershed day for theClub Industry in Australia when thePresident of Clubs Australia and Chairman of ClubsNSW, Peter Newell OAM,addresses the National Press Club inCanberra. This significant event will be followed by a dinner thatevening where federal politicians have been invited toattend to hear what effect the Andrew Wilkie-Julia GillardGovernment Gaming Machines Pre-Commitment legislationwill have on the Registered Clubs Industry in Australia. The CMAA Federal Executive will attend both events tosupport this campaign. All clubs and club managers are asked to lend their supporteither by attending or watching the televised event andcontacting their local politicians to voice their concern forthis ill-advised and unnecessary piece of legislation. As part of the CMAA’s efforts in this campaign against thegaming machine pre-commitment legislation, theAssociation brokered a meeting with Australian Council ofTrade Unions (ACTU) President Ged Kearney and Club

Industry unions to assist in convincing Prime Minister Gillardthat, if introduced, the Gaming Machines Pre-commitmentlegislation would have a significant impact on workers inour industry. The industry representatives got a good hearing withfurther statistical information requested and furthermeetings planned.

If the ACTU can’t convince a LaborPrime Minister that she needs to protectthe employment of workers, then I thinkwe are in dire straits.

The 2011 Annual General Meeting,Conference and Hospitality Expo onFebruary 28 and March 1 at the SydneyConference and Exhibition Centre,Darling Harbour was well attended, although numbers were down on our2010 figures. The industry is suffering once againfrom the uncertainty created by thepoliticians’ machinations on how we willoperate in the future.Three new members were inducted intothe CMAA Hall of Fame at our

networking function, held in conjunction with theConference and Expo.CMAA North West State Zone President and Armidale CityBowling Club General Manager Phillip Wheaton, RussellAdvisory Managing Director Greg Russell and IGT CEOAndrew Hely join the long and impressive list of CMAAsupporters.CMAA Riverina Murray Zone President and Griffith Ex-Services Club General Manager Gus Lico was announced asthe Peter Cameron Award recipient for his service to theCMAA and the Club Industry.Congratulations to all those industry professionalsrecognised through these prestigious awards. ➢ TERRY CONDON, CCM, is the CMAA’s Executive Officer,

The NSW Government has made aformal submission to the FederalParliamentary Joint Select Committeeon Gambling Reform, with respect toits inquiry into mandatory pre-commitment. The NSW submissionusefully supports a number of keyarguments that ClubsNSW and ClubsAustralia have raised in opposing theproposals of Mr Wilkie and SenatorXenophon. The submission outlines the extensiveharm-minimisation polices alreadyenacted by NSW and the success inreducing the problem gamblingprevalence rate to 0.4% in the State. On pre-commitment, the submissionargues for a practical and flexibleapproach, informed by relevantresearch and pilot programs. It notesthe importance that any solution doesnot unnecessarily deter gamingmachine play by non-problem andoccasional gamblers. The submissionalso calls for a detailed cost/benefit

analysis, including consideration of arange of options including mandatoryand voluntary pre-commitment, inaddition to no pre-commitment.The submission explicitly notes thatclubs are not-for-profit organisationsthat make important contributions tothe community and that costimplications for clubs associated withsystem implementation and reducedgaming machine revenue are likely toresonate through the widercommunity. The NSW Opposition also has put onrecord as part of the Memorandum ofUnderstanding with the ClubMovement that it will withstand theFederal Government’s push formandatory pre-commitment, statingthat it would support the voluntarypre-commitment model. The Gillard-Wilkie deal gives thestates and territories until the end ofMay to support the introduction ofmandatory pre-commitment underthreat of the Commonwealthlegislating over the top of the states. To date, NSW, Victoria and SouthAustralia have publicly opposedmandatory pre-commitment, withWestern Australia also voicing itsconcern.Clubs Australia President andClubsNSW Chairman Peter Newell willdeliver a lunch-time address at theNational Press Club on March 23,followed by a dinner with federalparliamentarians, clubrepresentatives and supporters thatevening. Clubs Australia has lodged a formalsubmission with the ParliamentaryJoint Select Committee on GamblingReform, which is conducting aninquiry into mandatory pre-commitment. A copy of thatsubmission is now available on theClubsNSW website. On February 4, Clubs Australiaappeared before the Committee inhearings held in Sydney. The key messages of the ClubsAustralia submission was ... ➢ the cost of implementing

mandatory pre-commitment wasnot affordable

➢ mandatory pre-commitment will beineffective in addressing problemgambling

➢ the consequences of the reformwill be to undermine the financialviability of the Australian clubmovement.

The privacy and security implicationsof having a pre-commitment devicewith biometric features and anational database of players also washighlighted as another key concernfor the industry. Other witnesses in the Sydney hearingspoke strongly against the Wilkieproposal, including Twin TownsServices Club CEO Rob Smith, alongwith Australia’s leading academic onproblem gambling, Professor AlexBlaszczynski.Prof Blaszczynski was particularlycritical of the lack of evidencebehind the proposal, and concludedthat pathological gamblers wouldseek to subvert any pre-commitmentsystem, either through settingextremely high limits, card swappingor moving to internet gambling. Clubs Australia CEO Anthony Ball saidthe organisation would, at everyopportunity, continue to advise theGillard Government of why it opposesmandatory pre-commitment andpresent effective, alternativemeasures that the Government shouldimplement.Clubs Australia supports a voluntarypre-commitment system that isdeveloped through consultation withindustry and is cost-effective, as wellas measures that target problemgamblers, rather than impacting oneveryone. Many clubs have already met withtheir Federal MP to discuss theseissues and all clubs are encouraged toengage their MP regularly.“If the Federal Government seeks tolegislate mandatory pre-commitmentin spite of opposition from industry, state and territory governments andall available evidence, then ClubsNSWthrough Clubs Australia will seek abroad coalition of stakeholders to runa coordinated, national campaignagainst the policy,” Mr Ball said.

By HENRI LACHClub managers are a tough lot byvirtue of their calling. They have many difficult issues ontheir collective minds: staffingproblems, ever-bourgeoninglegislative changes and restraints, and even the occasional unrulyperson on their premises.Townsville Cowboys Club boss JoeKelly is as tough as they come. His Irish genes are hard to ruffle. He served his apprenticeship at ademanding end of town - the LoganDiggers on Brisbane’s south side.Yet, even this bloke admits he wasshaken the night of February 2 whenthe enigmatically named cyclone Yasimade landfall just before midnight atTully, on Queensland’s far north coast- between Townsville and Cairns.“The wind in Townsville was still atgale force at 10 o’clock the nextmorning,” Joe said. “This is a green city and there weretrees down everywhere.“I‘ve never seen anything like it.”Joe is not a stranger to cyclones. He was at the helm of CazalysAustralian Football Club in Cairns

when Cyclone Larry struck the farnorth Queensland coast in 2006.“I’d been there a couple of monthswhen Larry hit on March 20,” Joerecalled.Again, Cazalys suffered only minorproperty damage this time around.“All the real damage always seems tobe further south,” Joe said.Like many others who experiencedLarry, Joe believes Yasi was morepowerful and more destructive.Although both the major centresescaped the full brunt of thecyclone’s fury, the effects werenonetheless savage.

TV vision of houses demolished by theforce of 350km/h winds, yachts andother large craft piled up in a heaplike toys cast aside by bored children, and giant trees ripped out of theground astounded and horrifiedaudiences world-wide.The Cowboys Club, located inTownsville’s CBD was luckier thansome other establishments in the city.Damage was superficial, and Joe Kellyis justifiably proud of the fact hisclub was one of the first premises tore-open for business on the Fridayafter the “big blow”.When word got around that the clubwas functioning, many people tookadvantage of a venue where thelights were on, the food was hot andthe drinks were cold.“We had a lot of business while manypeople remained without power, butthe long-term ramifications will notbe good,” he said.“The price of many commodities andfoods will go up and clubs will haveto pass on the cost to members.”The Cowboy Club’s future plans alsomay have to be put on hold for awhile because of the cyclone. The club was planning to re-locate toa 2.5-hectare freehold site at MountLouisa - a suburb about 8km to thenorth-east - and hoped that buildingwould begin in the 2012-2013financial year, with the new clubready for business by the end of2013. The move, however, is contingent onthe sale of its current property in theCBD.“All the approvals have been grantedand we’re ready to start,” Joe said.“But property prices are not likely tobe good after the cyclone and theremay not be too many buyers in theshort term.”He’s not fazed by the setback.Joe Kelly is determined the plans willbe fulfilled, albeit if delayed.About 10km to the south of the CBD,Townsville RSL Club General ManagerKarla Malouf is counting herblessings.Damage at her club also was minimal. She was able to open for business onthe Saturday after the passage ofYasi, despite a loss of food in the

freezers before power was restored. She too experienced Cyclone Larry, asAssistant Manager of the RSL Clubbefore she took on the GeneralManager role about 18 months ago. But, in her mind, the fury of Yasi onthat Wednesday was something else.“It was the longest night of my life,”she said.“The wind and the noise seemed togo on for hours and hours,” Karlaadded, thankful that her home in thecity’s west also survived with onlyminor damage.Like the Cowboys, her club provideda haven for many local residents leftwithout power.“They wanted to get away frombarbecue dinners to some real food,”Karla said. And, like Joe Kelly, Karla was anxiousto help the small clubs badlydamaged in the epicentre of thecyclone. The little Tully Leagues Club coppedthe full force of Yasi and obviouslywas in dire need.

Joe was quick to get on the phone toask the club how he and the Cowboyscould help. Karla was putting together somegaming machine bases from herstock.“We’ll remain open to requests forhelp from everyone,” she said. The brotherhood of licensed clubs is apotent force that’s working again infar north Queensland, as it did in theaftermath of the deadly floods to thesouth of the state.Meanwhile, a week after Yasi, manyhomes, and in fact whole districts, were still without power, water, andwith telephone communications onlypartly restored. While businesses and badly affectedindividuals have been promised aidfrom both the federal and stategovernments, licensed clubs are notlikely to be among the recipients.

In the aftermath of this disaster, observers may understand why someparliamentarians who toured thestricken area got a hostile receptionfrom farmers and home ownersdevastated by the cyclone, accusingthem of trying to make political gainfrom people’s misery.

With the NSW Election less than fourweeks away, the rival parties steppedup to the microphone at the CMAA’s2011 Annual General Meeting,Conference and Hospitality Expo atDarling Harbour earlier this month. The Federal Labor Government hastaken a strong position in supportingthe crusade of TasmanianIndependent MP for Denison AndrewWilkie and controversial South

Australian Senator Nick Xenophon tointroduce mandatory pre-commitment technology to gamingmachines across Australia. Before the August 2010 federalElection, Prime Minister Julia Gillardmade a commitment to the club andhotel industries that a re-electedLabor Government would notintroduce such technology to combatproblem gambling issues raised in theProductivity Commission’s Inquiry IntoGambling In Australia. However, when the support of theindependent MPs became the GillardGovernment’s lifeline to power, MsGillard did a deal with Mr Wilkie toimpose the mandatory pre-commitment technology. This position included over-riding theposition of the states that havevoiced their opposition to the FederalGovernment’s proposed legislation.NSW, Queensland, Victoria and SouthAustralian State Government havestated they will oppose thelegislation. The CMAA Federal Executive reasonedthat it would be appropriate formembers to hear from both sides ofNSW politics in the lead-up to theState Election – particularly on their

positions regarding the GillardGovernment’s determination toimpose the pre-commitmenttechnology.NSW Gaming and Racing MinisterKevin Greene addressed members andgaming industry executives onMonday, February 28. Mr Greene spoke about theGovernment’s initial and ongoingcommitment to support the ClubIndustry in its fight against theGillard Government’s legislative pathto its mandatory pre-commitmentlegislation. Mr Green added that heand the Government was veryuncomfortable with the notion of theFederal Government over-riding theNSW position. He said if the states -NSW, Queensland, Victoria and SouthAustralia – maintain their oppositionto the legislation, then the dispute islikely to end up in the High Court. MrGreene added that the NSWGovernment remained committed toevidence-based reform rather thanpoliticians’ opinions. On Tuesday, March 1, NSW ShadowMinister for Hospitality and Tourism,Racing and Major Events GeorgeSouris opened his presentation byspeaking about the strength of theCoalition’s Memorandum ofUnderstanding with the Club Industry.Mr Souris, the National Party Memberfor Upper Hunter, spoke about theMoU being was the single highest-spending policy that thre Coalitionhas announced in the NSW Election

CMAA Federal President BILL CLEGG,ACCM delivered his President’sReport to the AGM on February 28 …On behalf of the CMAA FederalExecutive, it gives me pleasure toreport to you on the activities of theAssociation during 2010. The primaryrole of the Executive is to directpolicy and maintain the strategicdirection of the Association. Clearly, this year was critical to the short-term and long-term direction, andbeing the start of a new term for theExecutive and Federal Council, therewas a need for the controlling bodyto reaffirm and realign the strategiesin place. Two key areas needed to beaddressed. First, policy direction -particularly in Victoria andQueensland where members hadrequested more direct input throughthe CMAA to government and withIndustrial Relations. With the introduction of anotherIndustrial Relations regime, thedemands on the IR capability becamean issue. Litigation and costs areanother major issue and I havealready reported on the impacttheses costs can have on theAssociation. Rightly, the protection ofmembers is paramount to our corevalues. However, it can be easilyassessed that the financial resourcescan be quickly strained by a numberor continuing cases that occurredover the past 18 months. Our IRservices and capability werereviewed, resulting in FederalSecretary Allan Peter taking on anexpanded role, which will includeinteraction with the expansion of ourservices into Queensland and, morerecently, Victoria.Though a relationship with AcademyTraining, the CMAA’s services andmembership benefits will be morewidely exposed to club managersacross Queensland. Significantly, issues that impact on members andthe industry will be referred foraction to the Executive through theFederal Secretary. It is anticipatedthat through the assistance of otherCMAA supporters, this initiative willhave a far-reaching impact onmanagers in Queensland and acrossVictoria. Support to members,

particularly when they need theirAssociation’s support will not becompromised and the traditionalservices to ensure fairness in theworkplace will always be maintained. The relocation of the Administrationand Career Development Centre toSydney Olympic Park is complete. Therelocation was more than effectivelymanaged by CMAA Executive OfficerTerry Condon and his staff. I thankthem for that additional burden. Thecosts of this relocation and facilitiesupgrade had a significant impact onthe financial result for the yearthrough actual costs and theinterruption to training facilities. Thiscentre was selected to facilitate theCMAA’s next decade and complimentthe direction of education and use ofE-learning, finally eliminating theissues of distance for themembership. Located at the centreof not only world-class facilities thevenue is recognised as an iconiclocation world-wide.The vision of refocusing ourinternational efforts can only becomplimented through our positioningat Olympic Park and 2011 will seethat vision come to fruition with thefocus of our educational bursariesmoving to Asia. The largest number ofbursary recipients will attend the

2011 Asian Club Managers Conferencein Hong Kong. The HospitalityManagement Development Australiabrand has now been formalised and itis particularly pleasing to announcethat the Association has come toagreement with Gaming TechnologiesAssociation to provide the educationcomponent of the AustralasianGaming Expo (AGE 2011) in August. This program will cover alljurisdictions as well as the Pacific rimand cover the whole of thehospitality sector, including casinosand hotels.Clearly the progress with the CareerDevelopment Centre and professionaldevelopment opportunities could notbe achieved without the support ofour Career Centre sponsors andsupporters. Being such a pivotalsource of revenue for the CareerDevelopment Centre, the Executive isin the process of reviewing anddeveloping a specific marketing planfor this area. It is this support thatthe Executive intends to protect fromthose that see value in the CMAAbrand and take advantage withoutcontributing to developmentopportunities for members. The most challenging immediate taskfor the Executive is to recruit areplacement Executive Officer toreplace Terry – an unenviable task. This process has started and it’santicipated that the replacement willbe in place prior to the CMAA’s MidYear Executive LeadershipConference. This will be the last opportunity, atthis forum, to acknowledge thecontribution that Terry has made notonly in his term as Executive Officerbut the various positions he has heldsince 1996. Terry has been the trueleader of this Association for a longtime and has directly influenced whatthis Association is about today. On behalf of the Executive andFederal Council I extend to TerryCondon, Ralph Kober and their teamthe appreciation of all members fortheir attention to the needs of themembership during the year and theprofessional manner in which youhave approached the manychallenges.

CMAA Conferences in 2011 also willbe a challenge for the CMDA. Apartfrom this Conference at DarlingHarbour, the Mid Year ExecutiveLeadership Conference at JupitersGold Coast - July 6 to 8 - will be anexciting and beneficial experience formembers and their directors. Theeducation component of the three-day conference is rigorous and worthyof Club Industry executives attending.I encourage you to support theindustry’s only manager-specificConference event.I thank the Board of ManagementStudies team, CMDA staff and ourmembers in supporting theAssociation in its mission in up-skillingand educating more professional clubmanagers.

Riverina Murray Zone will host its first meeting for 2011 –its Annual General Meeting - at the Barooga Sports Club onMarch 21 and 22. In a letter to members, Zone PresidentGus Lico said: “Another year has vanished as we reflect onsome positive aspects of our Zone and ponder what mayunfold for our industry. Leading to the NSW election inMarch, the issues surrounding compulsory pre-commitmentinvolving the Federal Government have us all worried. Theinput of Andrew Wilkie and Nick Xenophon bears closesurveillance with an outcome that could damage clubmembers and our interest. However, there are a numberof positive ahead for our Zone and theindustry in 2011, including for memberswho won bursaries at our previous RegionalMeeting. I encourage all managers toattend Zone meetings as bursaries aredrawn from the regional attendance. Thesebursaries can be utilised to assist inattending industry training, travel, coursesand associated expenses. A CMDA SecretaryManager Course was presented at GriffithEx-Services Club, which was well supportedfrom our vast area with 13 clubsrepresented for the 20 delegates. Thissupport is encouraging in continuing toprovide training in our Zone. Thanks toclubs and managers who participated. I also acknowledgeKaren Howe’s dedication as Zone Education Officer andher work in organising training for those members furtherwest. For the future, we would be foolish not toacknowledge that our industry will face serious

consequences should “compulsory pre-commitment”eventuate. Like the rest of you, I will be on the edgewhen our industry leaders inform us of the latestdevelopments at our Regional Meeting at Barooga.Hiowever I am reassured that our industry leaders haveworked tirelessly behind the scenes in submitting factualinformation and reports to governments and otherorganisations as a consequence of the ProductivityCommission Report Into Gambling provided to governmenton February 26, 2010 -www.pc.gov.au/projects/inquiry/gambling-2009. At club

level, Griffith Ex-Services Club has a DApending for works of around $8 million. When I say “pending”, it relates to theclub Board, rather than Council, becausethe Board is waiting on the outcome fromcompulsory pre-commitmentnegotiations. I finish by acknowledgingthe Riverina Murray Zone executive team-Greg “G1” Ryan, Jack Jolley, Greg “G2”Robertson, Paul Barnes and Karen Howes- for their contribution and assistance tomany managers. I also thank all Zonemembers for your continued supportwhich is testament to your support ofRegional Zone Meetings in recent years.

By KATIE CINCOTTAThe proverb tells us … “Give a man afish and you feed him for a day.Teach a man to fish and you feed himfor a lifetime.” That philosophy isnever truer than for aging men. With more 483 Men’s Sheds now upand running across Australia. Blokeswho may have lost their workidentity, a partner, or theirconfidence, now have a special placeto thrive and unwind.Phillip Island RSL Club is one of thefirst sub-branches in Victoria to jointhe scheme, which is helping up to30,000 men across the state stay fitand focused. The RSL’s club secretary BrianGoldberg, who at 73 is retiredhimself, reckons coming to the shedevery Tuesday and Thursday has given12 local men a reason to get up inthe morning.“If you think young and keep workingyou won’t get old,” Brian said. “If you’re just sitting there, you’llshrivel up and disappear. We teachthe old buggers how to build things, and they’re things that make money -

bingo boxes, signs, decorativewoodwork.”Club Manager George Szeitli says twogrants from the former BrumbyGovernment of Victoria went towardsdeveloping the 16-metre x 16-metreshed at the back of the club, withplans to build a welding shedalongside it this year.Brian says the shed has allowedmembers to become involved in theupkeep of their own club, which hasbeen hugely beneficial for their self-esteem.“When the club’s chairs get rickety, they’re sent down to the ‘boys’ to befixed, which saves money and makesthe old blokes feel pretty chuffedthey’ve been able to help,” Brianadded.Andrew Stark, from the AustralianMen’s Shed Association (AMSA), saysthat beyond the ritual enjoyment of“tool time”, there’s an importanthealth aspect at work acrossVictoria’s 150 Men’s Sheds.

“As a result of attending a Men’sShed, we believe that up to 1,500men per year are saved fromdepression or suicide,” Andrewadded. “Statistics show that once aman retires from the workforce, heloses 66% of his social networkovernight.“Therefore, reconnecting with othermen takes on vital importance.”By 2030, Australia’s number of retiredmen will double, which the AMSA saysplaces huge importance on health andwellbeing programs that help menstay connected to their community. With his welfare training, BrianGoldberg sees that lifeline in actionat their shed, where he has helpedseveral blokes deal with physicalillness and mental unrest. “Often they’ve got a problem andthey won’t talk to anybody,” he said.“So I just sit quietly with them, findout what the trouble is and pointthem in the right direction.”Joe, a former builder in his 60s, issuffering early stage Alzheimer’s andrecently joined the group after hiswife expressed concern at his flailingmood and loss of motivation. “At first he was shy and wouldn’ttalk to anyone, because he wasfrightened of making a bloody fool ofhimself,” Brian said.“But I said: ‘Look around you Joe,we’re all old. It doesn’t matter’. Nowhe’s helping us build a new weldingshed. And his wife says it has been abig change-around for him. Joe looksforward to Tuesdays and Thursdays -and he’s got a new attitude.”John Allen, 74, is a former carpenterwho has endured two open-heartsurgeries, a pacemaker, and the lossof his wife. But when he puts on the name badgethat says “Supervisor”, he gets amuch-needed morale boost. “I got chucked out of the EducationDepartment after I had a heartattack at 59,” John said.“But I love coming here, it keepsyour brain active, and that’s thewhole idea.”Bruce Talbot, former maintenanceofficer at Worley Hospital, says whenhe’s working at the shed he forgetsthat he’s got MS and a brace on his

The Richmond Club in theHawkesbury region of NSW continuesto enhance its reputation in qualityaged care in Australia. The club last month officially openedthe Donald McEwan Wing, the lateststage of its Magnolia Place retirementfacility in Richmond, which is part ofthe club’s Hawkesbury Living agedcare concept.NSW Liberal Party Leader BarryO’Farrell joined CMAA ExecutiveOfficer Terry Condon and more than100 local dignitaries, including theHawkesbury Mayor Bart Bassett,Member for Hawkesbury Ray Williams,Member for Londonderry AllanShearan and Directors of theRichmond Club and HawkesburyLiving for the opening. The $1.8 million project, encompassing five extra rooms withtwo beds each, a general lounge anddining area and new entry, was builtbetween August 2010 and February2011 by CMDA Career Developmentsponsor company Paynter Dixon.Richmond Club CEO Kimberley Talbotsaid the new facility, which wasdesigned as an aged-care facility, butwithout the look and feel of ahospital, is run by the Richmond Clubto combat urgent need for aged-carebeds in the region. The wing was named in honour ofRichmond community stalwart DonaldMcEwan who spearheaded numerousHawkesbury organisations and fund-raising efforts, especially during the1950s-70s.In opening the wing, Richmond ClubChairman Geoff Luscombe detailed MrMcEwan’s efforts including his work inbuilding Richmond’s first swimmingpool, better facilities for Richmond’sschools, bringing better sewerage tothe area and fundraising to raise theRichmond Community Nursing Homeup to State Government standards.Mr O’Farrell and Mrs Gloria McEwansymbolised these efforts when theyjointly planted a magnolia tree infront of the extension, which willspecialise in the newly-coined phrase“memory care” and its relatedconditions for the elderly.Mr O’Farrell praised the RichmondClub, which runs Hawkesbury Living, for the way that it had driven theretirement village development and

in the process created a greatcommunity model for other clubs tofollow. He paid tribute to the hard work ofRichmond Club CEO Kimberley Talbotafter first hearing of her vision for itfive years ago. “This project offers away for the club movement to evolvefrom what it has been doing for 60years in a creative way, but tocontinue to serve it in an area wherethere is an increasing need for seniorcare,” Mr O’Farrell added. “What wehave seen is the significance of theclub movement, but what’sparticularly obvious to me is thatgovernment doesn’t always know bestand the best way sometimes is forthe government to listen and supportthe efforts of others. If the RichmondClub hadn’t initiated this … whowould have?”Ms Talbot said it was a triumphantday and talked about the importance

of the community caring for itselders. The club’s Hawkesbury Livingmodel counters loneliness andisolation by providing opportunities tostay close and connected to othersand be surrounded by people thatthey knew from their local area.“We all benefit when elders remainengaged in the world,” she said. “Ourmodel of aged care and clubconnection is really a natural one as‘everything we do is connected to theway we live’. We have to transformthe ageing experience throughinnovation and collaboration. It is onething to have a vision, but it is trulyamazing when the vision comes tolife and the community buys into thatvision.”Hawkesbury Mayor Bart Bassett saidthere was a shortage of aged-carebeds in the Hawkesbury, with manyelderly people needing to leave thearea to get a bed.

The rise in mobile technology hasprovided flexibility in computing wecouldn’t have dreamed of 10 yearsago. Our phones have more processingpower and capacity than the desktopcomputers we were using 10 yearsago. All this has meant that we can getout email, send files among otherthings virtually anywhere that has aninternet connection. With this mobility comes a number ofthreats to your personal data and thetransactions you make via theinternet.A growing threat is the rise of “eviltwins” - a term used to describe a“rogue” hotspot that disguises itselfas a legitimate one,These “evil twins” are wi-fi accesspoints set up by cyber criminals orhackers with the purpose of capturingdata or users’ transaction details suchas passwords, bank account detailsand anything else they can access. For example, you may be sitting in acafe that offers free wirelessconnection and a number appears -two numbers appear that relate tothe café … Jumbuck and Jumbuck1. Jumbuck1 has the strongest signal soyou connect to that one for thatreason. What you don’t know is that you areconnecting to an “evil twin”. While it appears legitimate, it isactually a “rogue” wi-fi access pointthat can cause you harm. These access points are quite simplefor cyber criminals to set up. It can be as simple as plugging aspecial USB thumb drive into theirlaptop and - with a littleprogramming - they can appear to bea legitimate hotspot. They then use software to monitor allthe traffic, going through looking forlogins, accounts numbers, credit cardnumbers etc. Some of these “evil twins” ask you toauthenticate by downloading theirviewer ware. When this is done, you are loading avirus or key logging malware ontoyour machine which they are able toaccess anytime. The rise of these “evil twins” has

been found in places where peopleare likely to use credit cards, such ascafes near tourist attractions andairports. So, how do you protect yourself? The easiest way to ensure that youare not connecting to an “evil twin”is to confirm the exact name of thewireless hotspot you are connectingto by approaching a staff member onthe premises. Also, if you are connecting to yourdesktop via remote access, ensurethat it is by Virtual Private Network(VPN) and the VPN is encrypted. As with any internet usage, avoiddownloading anything that you are

not 100% sure of.

Often downloads, especially freedownloads, contain malware andinvite the perpetrator into yourmachine.

It is also good practise to do any typeof banking transactions behind afirewall.

If you do have to use a credit card, ensure the site has adequateprotection and that your anti-virusand spyware is up to date.

While the threat of cyber crime ispresent, you can avoid it happeningto you by making yourself aware andtaking some simple precautions.
