The changing world of work

The top five trends of 2018

Employee experience over engagementEverything about the workplace is

changing at an accelerated pace.

Companies need to anticipate the future

and take action to redesign work places

and work arrangements. Today’s top

talent expect an employee experience,

personalised to their needs and goals.

Employees no longer want just a career,

they are choosing to work for companies

that offer working flexibility, an engaging

culture that is moving with the times, and

have a strong sense of Corporate Social

Responsibility.

Companies with engaged employees outperform those without by more than 200% Source: Glassdoor

PassionateThis is our number one value. Plain and simple, we LOVE what we do! And it’s this passion, that drives us to give you the very best of our knowledge and expertise.

TrustworthyWe think it’s the simple things, like honesty and respect, that matter. That’s how you know, you can trust us with your business.

Team spiritedWe’ll work in collaboration with you, after all, you know your business. We believe in building long-standing partnerships and we like to have a little fun whilst we work!

Customer centricYou’re the reason we’re here and we want you to be wowed! We believe all our clients are individual and so too is our approach. With us you’ll get a bespoke, agile service to suit you.

InspirationalWe want to inspire great people practices and support your business to be the best it can be. We think outside the box to give you something a little different from the norm.

Driven to excelWe don’t believe in standing still; we take time to stay relevant and current, we look at ways we can build our business so that we can help you build yours. If there’s something you need, just ask!

Increased teamwork and collaborationOrganisational structures are changing from hierarchical to cross functional. Managers are

no longer the sole decision makers and keepers of knowledge. To innovate and contribute,

employees want to manage themselves with autonomy and empowerment. This increased

teamwork and collaboration is yielding results, and so top companies are taking note.

Virtual conference rooms, and messenger apps are facilitating the change, along with a

shift in culture where employers are embracing diversity and personality, and employees

are actively encouraged to be themselves. Constant collaboration means employees share

values and culture, there is a free flow of information, ideas and feedback, and people are

rewarded for their abilities, not their position.

Companies that promote collaborative learning are 5x more likely to be high performing

Technology driven improvements in learningMicrolearning, gamification, VR and AR are

fast becoming the norm in the workplace.

Today’s employees have just 1% of their

typical working week to focus on training

and development (source: Deloitte), so

flexibility in where and how they learn is

increasingly important. And companies are

finding these active learning mediums are

promoting knowledge retention and deeper

understanding, as employees are engaging

with the content rather than just listening

to it. Microlearning is being used to provide

continuous, on demand, bite-sized learning;

VR is putting employees into real-life work

situations; and gamification is being used in

talent acquisition and onboarding.

By 2025, 75% of the workforce will be millennials Source: Deloitte

A holistic focus on wellbeing and mental health2018 has seen an increased focus on the holistic wellbeing of employees both inside and

outside of work. The business benefits are clear; employees report better morale and

engagement, a healthier, more inclusive culture and a 31% reduction in sickness. Two fifths

of organisations are now reporting having a standalone wellbeing strategy, with wellbeing

on the agenda of senior leaders, and the importance of wellbeing being bought into by

managers. However, two fifths of organisations are still reporting that they act flexibly on

an adhoc need to wellbeing issues, or that their organisation is doing nothing to support

employee wellbeing.

31% of employees say that they have experienced mental health problems whilst in employmentSource: CIPD

Upskilling and investing in current employees Rapid change in business and organisations means everyone needs to be learning

constantly. This reduces turnover and increases retention. Continuous learning, succession

planning, internal promotion, and cross training are being used to combat skills gaps. More

and more people are looking to learn from peers and managers as much as experts. And

what’s more, the emerging trend amongst millennials is they rate development as the #1

job benefit.

It costs 6-9 months’ salary, on average, to replace an employeeSource: HR Daily Advisor

Spaced repetitionLearning for the future

Whilst technology progresses, our brains are prehistoric!

We can only remember five to seven pieces of new information at a time.

The most effective way to commit something to memory?

Repeat it. Just as you’re about to forget it!

Spaced Repetition does exactly that. It’s a learning technique that uses repetition at spaced intervals to exercise our brains and increase our knowledge retention.

The forgetting curve

If you repeat, just as

you’re about to forget,

you’ll remember!

Whether you have a comprehensive strategy in place and just need some external expertise on certain elements, or you’re a small business and not sure where to start, we can help you. HR is never a one hat fits all solution. True to our values,

we will take time to understand your organisation, your overall business strategy and your existing people systems, then look for the most effective way to support this. All our work is completely bespoke and tailored to what’s right for you.

Simon Sinek

When people are financially invested, they want a return. When people are emotionally invested, they want to contribute.

Research shows that organisations with high employee engagement have higher operating income, growth in earnings per share and greater revenue growth than

those with lower scores.

At the individual level, engaged employees experience higher job (and life) satisfaction, are more productive, and have lower intention to leave and lower absence rates than their non-engaged peers.

Critically, employee engagement strategy should support the wider organisation goals and objectives.

We’ll support you to achieve:

Leadership that gives a ‘strong strategic narrative about the organisation, where it’s come from and where it’s going’

Line managers who motivate, empower and support their employees

Employee voice throughout the organisation, to challenge or reinforce the status quo and involve employees in decision making

Organisational integrity, stated values are embedded into organisational culture; what we say is what we do. This closely relates to the sense of fairness and trust in the organisation and the psychological contract, which depend on employers delivering on their commitments and fulfilling employees’ expectations

Employee wellbeing is earning its place in boardroom conversations. And rightly so. It’s

predicted that better mental health support in the workplace could save UK businesses

up to £8bn a year. With changing workplaces and changing pressures, employers have

an increasing duty of care for their employees. And employees are increasingly making

employment choices based on their lifestyle needs.

We’ll support you in designing and delivering a holistic standalone wellbeing strategy, tailored to your organisation, using a 3-dimensional approach; focussing on physical, mental and financial health.
