It’s NOT an

option for

Believers!

James by Ben Stewart begins Sunday, January 12 at 5:30pm

Facilitator: Beth Stewart Duration: 8 wks Cost: $10 This class is open to adults.

This student study unpacks the book of James. The world desperately needs Christians whose actions match their convictions. A young generation is rising up, and they need to see the power of the gospel working its way out into our everyday lives. Enter James, the half-brother of Jesus. Be warned, everything is on the table. James will call us to evaluate the way we deal with hardship, handle money, use our words, and plan our futures. But if we will let him in, James's letter has the potential for our outside to match our inside, our activity to match our God-given identity.

The Explicit Gospel by Matt Chandler [Separate classes for men & women] Begins Sunday, January 12 at 5:30pm

Facilitators: Carrie Vail & Keith Baker Duration: 6 wks Cost: $12 The Gospel. It's how we were drawn to Christ; for many of us, the introduction to a Fathers love that we couldn't imagine. It leads us to salvation, but does it stop there? Often we set the gospel aside, thinking its only for seekers or new believers; don't we have to look somewhere else to grow and ma-ture? Whether you have been a Christian for weeks, months or even decades, The Explicit Gospel offers

us new growth and maturity in our faith. You will learn new meanings in a story you already love and will learn that God's dearest story,

isn't just for the start of your journey. Read the first chapter at theresurgence.com/2012/05/31/grab-a-free-chapter-of-the-explicit-gospel.

Precept’s Genesis Part 1: The Creation (Chapters 1-2) - (4 lessons)

Precept’s Genesis Part 2: The Fall, the Flood, and the Nations (Chapters 3-11) - (7 lessons) Begins Thursday, January 16 at 6:30pm

Facilitator: Shari Thompson Duration for Parts 1 & 2: 11 wks Cost: $25

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Do I believe this statement that God has revealed in His Book? What does this really mean, and how does it affect my daily life? When you immerse yourself in the Biblical account of Crea-tion, you will be led to know your Creator in deeper ways, increasing your awe of Him. You will also gain insight into who you are in relationship to your Maker and will gain a more complete understanding of your own purpose and how to live. Explore the Biblical ac-count of Creation found in chapters 1 and 2, how the world was created, and how man came into being. Adam and Eve, the serpent and an apple? Noah’s Ark and a worldwide flood? The Tower of Babel? Are these real or imagined? Stories or fact? What difference does it make anyway? Genesis holds the keys to understanding the origin of sin and evil, the justice of God’s judgment, and the mercy of God’s plan for the redemption of mankind and hope for a lost and dying world. Truths found in chapters 3-11 of Genesis lays a solid foundation for the rest of the story.

Counting Our Blessings…I thank you for your joint efforts of ministry and fellowship during 2013. The end of the

year is a good time to reflect on God’s blessing to our church and to commit to a new vision to follow His guidance

for 2014. We desire to unite our spiritual gifts in glory to God and His kingdom.

We saw 29 friends receive Christ and follow in believer's baptism. We received 39 brothers and sisters in Christ into

membership of our church by transfer of letter from a sister church or through statement of faith. We experienced

growth of 21% from May, 2012 until now with our average worship attendance increasing to 369.

The church was involved in multiple ministries locally, supporting ministry partners both through monthly ministry,

Serve60 projects, and financial gifts. Some examples of individuals and Sunday School class support of local ministry

includes: A Loving Choice Pregnancy Center, Open Door of Hope, area wide senior socials, Whitney Young Job Corp,

Colonial Hall Nursing Home, Amber Oaks Assisted Living, Hometown Manor Assisted Living, Operation Care,

Christmas Dinner Theater, Churchill Downs VBS, local benevolence and more.

Our youth ministry was involved in missions in Arlington, Texas and they took their first international trip ever to

Honduras. The church family served in missions for a week in Eastern Kentucky and a brick ministry trip to

Alabama. We have half-dozen men that regularly minister through disaster relief around our state and country.

Melissa Brendemuhl committed to serving as a missionary in Honduras. The church family gave over $70,000 to

state, national and international missions. The Crafts for Christ group meets weekly much of the year to support

missions through their beautiful handiwork.

The church was able to provide some needed upgrade of facilities too. Through the volunteer labor of our property

team and many individuals, we saw the following beautiful improvements: 3 restrooms renovated; new college-age

S.S. room; Chapel renovation with refinished wood floor, carpet, paint and speakers (jointly funded by our youth and

Hispanic ministry);

Our church was blessed to purchase 2.3 acres of land adjacent and east of our church alongside Highway 60. The

purchase price was $375,000 and we currently owe $235,000. Other ministry purchases include a new digital sign,

2011 15-passenger van, new flat screen TVs and computer for almost every children’s room in the FLC (funded by

Adventure Club), and new lighting and curtains for the worship stage.

We have expanded our work of Master Planning in 2013 by researching and planning for a new worship center.

Future plans are being considered for our property to meet needs of our church’s expanding worship and ministry.

Our Master Plan team continues to meet with design build companies and capital campaign consultants.

I'm sure many more blessings come to your mind. Our weekday ministries through youth, children, senior adults,

nursing homes, Adventure Club, Parent’s Day Out and more come to mind. We humbly thank God for His plan to

partner with His church to minister in His kingdom. We humbly come before Him giving praise for the gifts to bring

Him glory through servant leadership, worship, fellowship and ministry. We celebrate the joy that is ours when we

serve God by serving others!

We pray God will use us in greater ways in 2014. We pray for His unity, provision, wisdom and protection. We ask

Him to show us our weaknesses that we may receive His grace to bring Him glory. “Now to Him who is able to do

exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the

glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3: 20-21)

Jesus modeled a relationally based discipleship. Jesus modeled a relationally based discipleship. As Jesus and His 12 disciples ate, rested, and traveled together, Jesus often paused to teach them. He used visual objects to establish necessary principles and He challenged them to carry out tasks that were far beyond their comfort zones. In His discipleship model, group mem-bers learn from relationships with others who are on their own journey toward spiritual maturity. Life groups welcome the fact that life is a series of adventures and battles to be faced together. When a group of people does life together, those in the group travel the winding road as a band of brothers and sisters, fully engaged in life and passionate about those on the road with them. All of our ups and downs, masterpieces and mistakes, are designed to reshape us increasingly into the glorious image of God. The catch is that we were never designed to process these life experiences alone. Healing occurs best in the context of community where others join us on the journey. We also need the encouragement and accountability of others who care about us. We need community. A life group unwilling to settle for anything less than redemptive community will be compellingly irresistible to people in search of acceptance and significance. Real community like this will be a magnet for our searching, unbelieving world. These people discover a whole new way of living that is captivating, exhilarating, and life giving. People today are cynical about what they hear in a preacher's monologue, but they will welcome a dialogue on a spiritual or real-life topic. They long for close relationships rather than a myriad of passive acquaintances. Pre-Christians today are powerfully affected when they see people of faith in a healthy life group, as they give and receive genuine love while sharing life together in an an unpretentious and authentic way.

What’s Next: Group leaders are asked to meet weekly on Sunday afternoons from 5:30-7:00

p.m. with Steve to practice Home Small Group principles and format. We will begin on January 12 and conclude February 2. After completion, we will be ready to begin Life Groups Article content from Destination: Community Small Group Ministry Manual by Rick Howerton

Serving Jesus Together, SBC Finance Team Letter to church family, Sending It Ahead.....we can't take it with us, but we can send it on ahead. Every investment of our time, gifts, and resources for God's glory will result in an eternal reward. By being faithful to the Lord, we are laying up treasure in heaven.

These are exciting times - we are seeing God working in so many areas of our church family. Paul wrote to the churches of Galatia, "And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart" (Galatians 6:9). Yes, there is a reward. And this should cause us to want to do everything we can for God's glory. Jesus is coming soon!

After we give Him our hearts, it's easy giving money or anything else (Romans 12:1). When we put Him before all else, before life itself...then our dear Savior will give us the sweet privilege of sweet and natural expression of the heart's devotion. The reason God allows us to have a surplus above our needs is to enable us to give. True wealth comes from the gift of giving. The interesting thing about God's plan is that when He finds a good steward who will share freely, He returns even more (2 Corinthians 9: 6-11).

Our 2014 budget was shaped with the goal of beginning a capital campaign for a worship center. We increased our debt reduction by 21.5% to $80,000 in order to pay off our land debt in the next few years. Our over all budget was increased by 6.6% for an increase of $782 per week.

The tithe (10%) from its origin in the Bible has always been an outside testimony of heart attitude. Once we under-stand that giving is our testimony to God's ownership, it opens a higher level of sharing. We grow to share offerings above the tithe out of obedience to God's Word. We are asking you to pray about increasing your weekly/monthly gift to our church.

I really hope that you were one of the blessed ones who got to

come to the dinner theater this year. If I have heard it once, I’ve heard it a hundred times: “This was the best thing we’ve ever done! They were incredible!”

I would have to agree with those people. From the choir musi-cal Hark the Herald to the drama performance of “It’s a Wonderful

Life,” the people that God placed within this church went above and beyond in their creative offerings through music and drama! The true test of any lasting effect is if something was God-honoring and God-inspired and if it shone a light on Him. That’s why I’m so proud of everyone involved in this dinner theater!

Our own Jeff Logue, who played the lead George Bailey, said it best: “I was unsure I could pull this off, but when I turned it over to God, I felt at ease. This was definitely a God thing. I prayed continuously and want to make sure he gets all the glory for what I did.”

BIG THANKS!

To all the cast, who worked and memorized and sacrificed

To our illustrious directors Toni Moore and Kathy Mansfield, who toiled to

bring out the best in everyone

To Anita Clay and all the people who helped with the beautiful holiday décor

To all of the people who helped make the set as beautiful and special as it was,

drawn out by J. Lowe

To our technical people with sound and lights, who made sure everything was

seen and heard in the best ways

To our food directors and cooks and kitchen staff, led by Brent and Angie

White, who produced incredible dishes

To our servers and hosts, who made sure people had what they needed when

they needed it

To all the hands and feet who helped with setup and teardown and cleanup after every performance

To our pastor Steve, who ties the gospel into every dinner theater we offer and makes sure Christ is on display

To our office staff of Denise Miller and Angie Sanford who makes sure tickets are in place and everything goes as

planned

To everyone who had a part in bringing this big production of drama and music and food together WE THANK YOU! Every piece of the puzzle was needed for the picture to be complete. Much appreciation for all of you! I should also mention a big thanks for Rick Mansfield and Laura Bassler for videoing the nights, and to Rick for making it all available on Vimeo and Youtube. If you missed it, you can see it online. If you were there, you can relive and high-light all the memories! Check out the Vimeo here: https://vimeo.com/81372092

A Missions Story, “Will this be our Church?”:

Once there was a small, rural town where horses actually outnumbered the residents. While the equestrian agri-business of

the area continued to grow, other farm-dependent life-styles began to fade. Family-run dairy and tobacco farms shut down

and were replaced with excellent large, corporate-like grain farms. Others were transformed into subdivisions or shopping

centers. The little rural town grew.

More than three ‘denominationally different’ churches occupied the area. With intentional outreach and ministries to

young families and children, one particular church grew substantially. With that growth came the resources to expand

their youth, children, and senior adult ministries. The church adapted its worship and music style to bring excitement to

the Sunday morning worship hour. Bible study groups grew as did the church’s involvement in local, national and interna-

tional missions. Community ministries broadened to reach the whole county, from the west to the east along the main state

highway corridor. Budgets increased and the church’s facilities, parking, educational and worship space filled and became

substantially cramped, which limited its resources.

In looking out across the landscape, this church still saw scores of needs. Even with the church’s growth, the community

had grown faster. Their local mission field was as needy as it had ever been. After multiple studies and forums, it became

a necessity to expand the churches facilities. No longer could the church squeeze more ministries and mission work out of

the confines of their space.

God began to show His face. First, God provided faithful givers to pay off existing debt. Additional funds were used to

enhance as much of the current facilities as possible. Unexpectedly, adjoining land became available economically and in

less than a month’s time, the church secured the much needed property with minimum debt to expand its footprint on the

ever expanding growth of the town. Still the local mission field of unbelievers and those seeking a place to experience God

grew faster and faster.

If this was a land far away, it would be called a ripe mission field. People’s need abounded around this church and its opportunity to expand had never been greater. The church responded with a desire to seek His Master’s Plan before build-ing one of its own. The cost of bricks and mortar would never exceed the price paid to reach this community, even if one unbeliever at a time. These may first connect in a new worship center or grow in faith in a new small group meeting room or be drawn together with other children and youth in age group gatherings of worship and praise. God desires for Simpson-

ville Baptist to be involved in reaching the communities in which we live and beyond. Will this be our church?

It can be….

Churches of our size already have the resources to provide ‘full-service’ ministries and missions. They simply need to be

reassigned and reallocated, so the reasons to build go beyond the available resources:

1. Our church is already a resource center, depended upon by the communities of our county for reaching out locally and

around the world.

2. Our church can be a leadership center to help other churches, church leaders and pastors in their ministries and

missions.

3. Our church can have a historical and primary role in the future moral and ethical culture of the communities of Shelby

County.

Can it be or will it be?

Happy New Year from your Master Plan Initiative Team. Looking forward to 2014! May God’s blessings to all of us be shared with many this year and in years to come.

MISSIONS

Melissa Brendemuehl update

Todo cheque leque con Cristo en Honduras! ...which means "Totally okey dokey with Christ in Hondu-

ras." There is a very common catch phrase in Honduras which

is “cheque leque” - our equivalent of okey dokey. Evidently this

phrase is unique to only Honduras and is on many of the T-shirts

that tourist buy. Her Spanish teacher helped her come up with this

and thought it was pretty cool.

If you use Facebook, Melissa posts on there a couple of times a

week and puts some pictures as well when she can. That is the very best way to keep up with her and the adventures she has every week. She has had some significant bouts with

flu/colds/country and diet adjustments, but is doing better now. Quite a rough start on her mission.

Financially, she appreciates all of the support from SBC and a few people outside the church that have pledged to help her at least for the first year.

In November, she got a two-room apartment in the city when she is not working at the ranch with the kids. She

shares the space with two others and is there about 2 days out of 8-10 days. They are there on different days, but it is rather sparse!

She says there is crazy poverty there!!! Everything is expensive. She discovered that anything imported or plas-

tic is high cost. A three-pack of Crest toothbrushes $7.50, so the cab driver who makes $15 a day would use half a day's pay to buy toothbrushes for half his family!!!

Melissa does not make very much money at all, but one issue was very important to her: how and where to

tithe! She finally decided to keep her tithe in Honduras to help the poor church here in Honduras that her lan-

guage teacher attends in Comayagua.

When the church gets the deposit, a family from the congregation is selected each month for the funds to

help. This might be replacing their dirt floor in their house with a concrete one, replacing the sheet metal roof,

patching a hole in the roof, clothing, food, meds, blankets, purchasing a mattress, water etc. whatever their

greatest need is. The church directs the work and after the project is completed, pictures are taken each month

to show how the money was used with a picture of the family.

Melissa thanks us for the prayers for her safety. People are getting killed all over

the country and there is a lot of corruption. She totally trusts God because God

is good and she trusts Him in all areas to provide for her.

On her "off days" she is starting to work with street kids that live in the open air market in Tegucigalpa. A pastor from Elizabethtown KY feeds them daily

through funding from Compassion International. Mere coincidence? Or is

God really opening more doors for her in Honduras to serve Him? Melissa is

living the dream of being the hands and feet of Christ and He is enabling her to get out and be amongst the people more and see more of the culture and coun-

As communication goes, there isn't any regular mail in Honduras. If you want to send messages, use Facebook or her e-mail address. If you would like a

WGO calendar, let Angie know. We have about 35 of them to send out - first

come-first served. Praise God for Melissa's obedience to the Great Commission.

Keep praying and supporting her! Charlie Wallace

Shoe Box Ministry

We took over 500 boxes to 3 missions for the

children’s Christmas and the ministries were each

thrilled when receiving them on Monday. Thanks

to each who contributed to the gifts and special

thanks to Juanita Myers, Mary Wyatt, Gerry Ray

and so many others who helped. We had 12

churches/groups that participated this year.

The children in the Ugandan Orphans Choir bring a message of hope—sharing their African folklore and the power of God’s love through music and dance. They are the fortu-nate few who have been rescued from poverty and are now a voice for children who are still waiting to be sponsored. Each year, the choir tours around the country and gives people an opportunity to provide children in developing countries with an education and a hope for a future.
