Reflections on Today's ReadingsReflections on Today's ReadingsReflections on Today's ReadingsReflections on Today's Readings From the PastorFrom the PastorFrom the PastorFrom the Pastor

My dear friends in Jesus,

A s of July 1 we have entered into a new fiscal year; 2011-12. There are a few highlights from our last year that I want to reflect on for a moment. The first highlight is that for the first time since 2000, we are debt free.

At the time we closed our school we were in debt to the diocese for $1,400,000. After that we entered into negotiations with the diocese for debt relief. The dio-cese forgave some debt, other debt we paid from the sale of parish property; es-pecially the building at 4212 Fair Oaks and revenue received from the new HUD building: Patrician Arms II. The remainder of our debt has been paid off month by month, principal and interest, until this past month. With our final payment in June we have become debt free. This is an awesome accomplishment to which I especially want to thank our Finance Council and our Parish Operations Manager, Buzz Bruno. They guided our progress by a skillful process of cutting expenses and raising revenue on a monthly basis. That process was made especially difficult during this downturn in our economy. I am very grateful for all who assisted in the process and I extend to each of you a sincere thank you for a job very well done. Part of our agreement with the diocese was to guarantee that we repaid all the past APA from 2000 and guarantee that we would meet all future APA as-sessments. The church requires that each parish maintain itself as financially viable and pay all just debts. Every parish is assessed a certain amount and this amount is never forgiven. I want to thank each of you who have so generously assisted the parish to meet it’s APA obligations these past years. Without your commitment we would not have succeeded in this obligation. Our assessment for this year is just over $132,000 and we have pledged from you a little over $128,000. I feel confident that you will once again, as you have from 2006, meet our parish obligation to APA. Thank you for being such a wonderful and gener-ous parish, especially in the light of our difficult economic times. This past week with the combination of family vacations and inclement wheth-er on Sunday, our offertory fell very short of our expenses. When you are on va-cation or for other reasons are not able to attend Sunday Mass, please try to re-member that our expenses continue and to the degree you are able, try to make up what you did not contribute when you were absent. This will be very much ap-preciated. In the gospel today Jesus speaks to us; assuring us that he realizes that our life burdens are challenging. Since we are so loved by him, he assures us that he will gladly carry our burdens and pains if we but willing embrace his load. Jesus assures us that we will find his yoke easy and his burden light. To carry his bur-den is nothing other than to follow the way of life he has called us to follow– and in this too he assists us with his unlimited grace.

In His Love, Fr. Angelus

Stewardship Reflection: For my yoke is easy, and my burden

light." - Matthew 11:30

When we think of being good stewards, we may think that God asks too much of us by asking us to generously share our time, talent and treasure. However, the yoke of steward-ship is not heavy. Good stewards learn that by turning away from the materialism of the world, we can experience great joy in spending more time with God and sharing more of our gifts with others.

Page 4: July 3, 2011

God has indeed been good to us. The more He sustains us the more we should place our trust in Him. Where were we five years ago? I was in Jamaica. Our parish was in financial chaos. Our future looked bleak. Were we going to cease to exist as a parish or not? Just three years ago the

economy took a nose dive. The housing market dropped. Investment bubbles burst. Pension funds were in danger. Apparently God still had a plan for the life of St Patrick Parish. We entered into negotiations with the dio-cese. Our debt was reduced as long as we paid our Annual Pastoral Appeal assessment (APA). The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) was still looking for land for senior citizen housing. Sidney School was looking for adequate space to care for their children. We started to meet our APA assessment. Our weekly offertory in-creased. Membership in our parish family started to grow. God continued to care for us and keep our heads above water. With the help of God, the intercessory pray-ers of our parish family, with the hard work of dedicated parishioners, the generosity of folks offering back to God our time, talent, and treasure, we will be completely out of debt this week. Happy Fourth of July everyone! We have attained financial independence. Our kids are home from school and it is vacation time, time to celebrate. However… Just like that old TV show “Lost In Space,” I hear the robot say “Warning, Master Will! Danger!” The warning is that we must be diligent. Even though plans for this upcoming fiscal year are pretty exciting we still have to be frugal. And don’t forget when we go on vacation the cost of running the parish never takes a vacation. So let’s really celebrate the faithfulness of God and His divine provi-dence. Don’t forget our parish family when we go on vaca-tion. Happy Fourth of July. Have a great summer. We worked hard for it.

Religious Education / Faith Formation News

It’s hard to believe we are already celebrating our independence as a

nation! We are free, based on our Constitution and Bill of Rights and we

continue to pray that those who are still struggling for their freedom will

achieve it. It is significant we celebrate our freedom in the month of July

because since July 1849, based on a letter by Pope Pius IX, the month of

July has been dedicated to the Precious Blood of Jesus, the cost of our

true freedom that gives us liberty, truth and life even beyond our mortal

death.

Beginning with the early Church Fathers, she has always taught that the

Church was born from the pierced side of Jesus and the sacraments were

brought forth by His Blood. Pius, when he established the feast of the

Precious Blood said: "The Precious Blood which we worship is the Blood

which the Savior shed for us on Calvary and reassumed at His glorious

Resurrection; it is the Blood which courses through the veins of His risen,

glorified, living body at the right hand of God the Father in heaven; it is the

Blood made present on our altars by the words of Consecration; it is the

Blood which merited sanctifying grace for us and through it washes and

beautifies our soul and inaugurates the beginning of eternal life in it."

I found this passage in the oldest document, outside of sacred scripture,

from the first century of the Christian era – to be exact, from Pope St.

Clement I, dated about 96 A.D. Says Pope Clement: "Let us fix our gaze

on the Blood of Christ and realize how truly precious It is, seeing that It

was poured out for our salvation and brought the grace of conversion to

the whole world." Blessed John Paul II said “The sign of "blood poured

out", as an expression of life given in bloodshed as a witness to supreme

love, is an act of divine condescension to our human condition. God

chose the sign of blood because no other sign suggests a person's total

involvement so eloquently. “

The Precious Blood is our protection against the onslaughts of the evil

one. Pray that the Precious Blood cover you each and every day, and you

will experience the power and freedom of this simple prayer. In Closing, I

offer this prayer … try to pray it often this month:

Lord JESUS, by faith in Your merits, I now take Your precious blood and

sprinkle it over myself and my family from the crown of my head to the

very soles of my feet. I claim total and complete protection for my life and

my family. Lord Jesus, keep me free today from evil, sin, temptation, Sa-

tan's attacks and afflictions, fear of darkness, fear of man, sickness, dis-

eases, doubts, anger, all calamities and from all that is not of Your King-

dom. Fill me Lord Jesus with the gifts of Your Holy Spirit and grant me the

gift of wisdom, knowledge, understanding and discernment so that I will

live today in your glory by doing that which is right in accordance with the

Father’s will for me this day. I praise you, Jesus I Thank you, Jesus I Love

you, Jesus I Adore you, Jesus. Amen

The Altar Servers and Religious Education Students along with family and friends of St. Patrick attended a Rays baseball game on Fa-ther's Day. It was a great day at the ball-park with a tailgate par-ty prior to the game. Everyone enjoyed the event with fun, friendship and food! It was a small token to say thank you to the Altar Servers for their hard work throughout the year and to join in fellowship with the Religious Education Students who may be future severs.

Thank you for your generous support of the essential work of the Holy Fa-ther and his charitable acts through the Peter’s Pence Collection. Our contributions will be combined with those of our brothers and sisters around the world to help Pope Bene-

Prayer of Pope John Paul II For the Family

Lord God, from You every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. Father, you are love and life. Through Your son, Jesus Christ, born of wom-an and through the Holy Spirit, the fountain of divine charity, grant that every family on earth may become for each successive generation a true shrine of life and love. Grant that Your grace may guide the thoughts and actions of husbands and wives for the good of their families and of all the families in the world. Grant that the young may find in the family sol-id support for their human dignity and for their growth in truth and love. Grant that love, strengthened by the grace of the sacrament of marriage, may prove mightier than all the weaknesses and trials through which our families sometimes pass. Through the intercession of the Holy Family of Nazareth, grant that the Church may fruitfully carry out her worldwide mission in the family and through the family. We ask this of you, who is life, truth and love with the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Thank you to the Bingo Babes and the Men’s group for another great Bingo night. Dinner was great as usu-al. A total of $1422.44 was raised for our parish community.
