THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST – Faith has many important facets that are effective in our lives. Prayer and worship connect us to the God who created us and who

daily gives us purpose and provides for us. Times of community and fellowship unite us with our family in faith to realize that we are not alone on our journey of love with God. Outreach and charity put our faith into action so that we can be the hands and heart of Jesus in the world and provide for the needs of others. Yet, at the heart of our faith, its essential foundation, is the gift of God himself to his people, the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the memorial of God’s great act of love for us, the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus. The Eucharist is the source of our life as people of faith and that to which we return all that we have received in thanksgiving to God. Inspired by this Feast of Corpus Christi and as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! may our love for the Eucharist increase so that our faith may remain strong in the midst of change. JUNE 3, 2018

A couple of weeks ago, Fr. David Bonnar came to our Pentecost Sacred Arts Festival to hear Sam Hazo’s poetry reading. Professor Hazo taught Fr. Bonnar while he was a student at Duquesne University. Following the recitation, I took Fr. Bonnar on a walking tour of our grounds and buildings to familiarize him with our facilities, as he will assume administrative oversight of OLG on October 15th. One of Fr. Bonnar’s comments particularly struck me during that walking tour in the dusk light. “All that grass!” he remarked about our grounds as we chatted with parishioners in the parking lot. Fr. Bonnar noticed what we may take for granted: the expansive 16 acres of fields and parking lots, six buildings and sprawling property. Recall that our neighboring parish, St. Bernard, has a beautiful church situated on the main drag of Mount Lebanon but bounded by asphault and concrete, with a parking lot on a hillside. Fr. Bonnar observed the obvious assets of our parish facilities that evening when he additionally commented: “The property is so flat.” You also probably couldn’t find two more architecturally different churches in the Diocese than Our Lady of Grace and Saint Bernard. The magnificent stone and Spanish tile roofing of Saint Bernard Church is designed in the traditional cruciform style, with a long center aisle. Our Lady of Grace is a contemporary church in the round with six entrances and a wraparound balcony unique in the diocese. St. Bernard Church holds 750 people. Our Lady of Grace holds 1,300 people. Saint Bernard is located at the high point of Bower Hill Road while Our Lady of Grace is located in a valley as Bower Hill Road winds its way down. The dramatically different designs of our two churches should offer some interesting liturgical alternatives in the coming years as the two communities find new ways to utilize these two sacred spaces. Don’t hesitate to go to Mass at St. Bernard Church in the weeks ahead and please welcome the St. Bernard parishioners who might be visiting Our Lady of Grace Church in the coming months. We’ll be praying for both of our parishes in the weekly petitions offered at Sunday Mass. Fr. Richard Infante, Pastor
