    VIDEO: Drew Dudley "Everyday Leadership"

We have all changed someone's life -- usually without even realizing it. In this funnytalk, Drew Dudley calls on all of us to celebrate leadership as the everyday act of im-proving each other's lives.

Everyone has the potential to be a leader without realizing it. It quotes one of our favor-ite speeches about being scared of our own light.

    Drew Dudley talks on

    Leadership

here are loads of excuses as to why people just cantbe a leader Here are some of them:

Excuse One: I cant lead. I dont have a position of authority. This excuse stems from the traditional definition of leadership. Itequates leadership with a position and with authority. Title can give youauthority, but it cannot give you influence. Healthy influence is earnedby the credibility you bring to a relationship or organization.

If we define leadership in a different manner, it opens up an entirelynew perspective. What if leadership had more to do with finding anarea of strength and in using that strength, well naturally influenceothers in a positive way?

Excuse Two: I am just not a natural take-charge person.

There are two kinds of leaders: Leaders and leaders. These twokinds of leaders can be defined as HABITUAL leadersand SITUATIONAL leaders.

Habitual leaders are the natural ones, who tend to be good at leadingwhatever group they are in. They feel natural taking charge and run-ning point on just about any project. They lead out of habit.Situational leaders are those people who make up the majority of thepopulation. Most of them dont even feel l ike leaders until they findthe right situation that fits their passions and their strengths. Once inthe area of their strength, they come alive and become the right one tolead in that particular situation.

Excuse Three: But I am an introvert so I dont really influenceothers. Everyone who is willing has the potential to lead and influence others even if they are introverts. For years, sociologists tell us the most intro-verted of people will influence 10,000 others in an average lifetime. Inother words, every one of us, even the shy ones, are influencing oth-ers.

Naturally, some folks are going to turn out to be better leaders thanothers. Some will actually become excellent at organizing large teamsof people, or at speaking to large groups of people and casting visionto them. But leadership isnt limited to these skills. If its only for theskilled people, then well never accomplish the good that needs to hap-pen in our lifetime. It would be like saying that no one has to serve whodoesnt have the gift of service; or that you dont have to pay taxes ifyou dont have lots of money. We all have the responsibility to do whatwe can based upon our strengths.

Excuse Four: If everyone is a leader then who is following? If we define leadership as using influence for a worthwhile cause, then it helps us see that we are all leading and we are all following. IfI am leveraging my strength and using it to positively impact my worldand you are doing the same, then we are all leading in some way. Itisnt about position.Everyone leads from their area of strength.

Excuse Five: Leadership means power and power corrupts. Leadership is intended to be about serving others in the area of ourgiftedness. When we do, we naturally ripple with influence. We donteven have to try to lead others. As we mature, we are to naturallyuncover our area of dominion, and influence a sum of people. Poweris a byproduct of service. It does not have to be pursued.

Excuse Six: But Im a person of faith . Doesnt the Bible say we

are to be followers? Regardless of your spiritual position, as you mature, you will becomea person of influence. This means a mature follower of Christ willeventually become a leader of people. Part of what it means to bemade in Gods image is that people have the capacity to lead and torule. You will always be following and you will also be leading.

Excuse Seven: Leadership is only for people who have top posi-tions in an organization. More and more researchers agree that leadership is a 360 degreeproposition. We influence everyone around us. In fact, most of thepeople who influence their team, their corporation, their non-profitorganization in fact, their nation are not the Chief Executives ofthose organizations. We lead up, we lead around, and we lead downin organizations. Influence happens everywhere and often from themiddle of the pack.

So, lets embrace it. Lets learn to lead and influence in a mannerappropriate with our giftedness. Leadership is a calling on every oneof us, to some degree. Its about becoming the person we weremeant to be. It is less about position and more about disposition. It isnot so much about superiority but about service in the area of ourstrengths. It has less to do with a set of behaviors and more to dowith a perspective with which we view life. When we define it thisway, it puts the cookies on the bottom shelf. Every one of us can doit. Everyone is a leader.

The idea behind recalibrating your reality is pretty simple. When you get locked into a view of the world you get stuckin routines and you lose sight of different viewpoints. Recali-brating that view can help you solve problems, win argu-

ments, and even be happier. But how do we actually do it?We'll take a look at a few of the different methods you canuse to recalibrate your perception of the world and yourself.

Wait Five Minutes Before You Respond

One regret most of us have is our stupid responses during debates orheated arguments. To help cure that and give yourself time to think,37signals author Jason Fried suggests a simple approach: give it fiveminutes. Simply letting ideas settle in will inevitably force you to recon-sider your own viewpoints, weigh them against your own, and give you anopportunity to come up with a better response.

Force Yourself to Think from Alternate Points of View in Monoto-nous Situations

It's not all about making yourself better at arguing a point. I t can also beused as a form of stress r elief for daily annoyances. When you get an-noyed at a situation or another person, think about why you would dowhat they're doing. Putting yourself in that mindset can change your viewof a situation. Doing this on a regular basis disrupts your default-settingand makes you more conscious of the world around you.

Write Out Your Day From Another Point of View

Writing things down is a means to understand different perspectives andone way to do that is to t ake a look at your day whether that's work, your creative life, or happiness from the third person.Writing out your day from a different point of view will give you a uniqueperspective of your situation and can help you pinpoint where a problemis. This isn't just about altering your view of the rest of the world though,it's also useful to recalibrate your perception of yourself.

Alter Your Perception of Self to Expand Your Notions of the World

We see the world through our own set of filters, but changing and recog-nizing those filters isn't too difficult. More difficult is editing your self-

perception in order to change how you view the world.

    Change How You Present Yourself

New research from Northwestern University suggests that you may be influenced byhow you present yourself. The researchers call this "enclothed cognition" and theo-rizes that clothes have an effect not just on how you're seen by the world, but also

how you see yourself. Basically, you can alter your self-perception and subsequentlyyour reality by wearing different clothes. When your self-perception is changed, so isyour view of reality.

Try on a Different Personality for an Hour

The idea of trying on a new personality might seem a little strange if you do it aroundfriends and family, but doing so on a short flight or even in with a random conversa-tion on the bus is an experience that completely alters your reality. It's also surpris-ingly easy to do.

Create Hiccups in Your Physical Reality t o Recalibrate Your Views

One of the problems of falling into a set notion of the world is that we stop beingmindful of the world around us and that closes our perception even more. In a lot ofways it's a good thing, because it's a great boon to productivity to not have to givecognitive thought to a lot of our daily actions, but it's still good to change your worldslightly now and again. It's easy to do and can have a surprising effect.

Rearrange Your Home Environment to See New Things

Rearranging your home is an oddly relaxing way to explore your own dwelling andtake a good look at the reality you form. The goal is t o provide that cognitive bump inthe road so that when you walk into your house you're forced to r eassess the situa-tion slightly and take the time to actually think about what you're seeing.

Take Different Routes and Find New Areas to Explore

Like the rearranging of your furniture, taking alternate routes is about expandingyour reality into something larger and breaking your routine enough to cause you topause. This doesn't mean you have to take a new way to work every day, but itmight mean taking a different street to the grocery store or jogging along a differentpath. When you break your routine, you move away from your reality and t ake inanother section of the world. The end goal of recalibrating your reality is to expand your perception soyou can make your life better and more interesting. The above methodscan be used to work through creative blocks, problem solve issues atwork, and even to deal with minor traumatic events. Once you embrace

the idea that your perception is limited, it opens up all types of new ideas.
