Manufacturers of fashion accessories, gifts, decors, homestyle and souvenir items gathered to showcase what Cebu is popularly known for worldwide--as a manufacturer of high-quality export products made from local and natural raw materials. Accent tables and dining chairs made of rattan, solid wood, abaca, and raffia, as well as colorful fashion accessories made of wood, bone, coco, shells and fibers; and home de-cors like mango-shaped centerpieces made from scrap ma-terials such as twigs were some of export products show-cased at the “Exquisitely Filipino” trade exhibit at SM City Cebu, especially mounted for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. Exquisitely Filipino, was made possible with the partnership between the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Cebu Provincial Government, and SM City Cebu. The APEC National Organizing Committee (NOC) and the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) also helped organize the event. The trade expo, which ran from 22 August until 8 Septem-ber 2015, was open to APEC delegates as well as local shoppers.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Cebu Provin-cial Office turned over 10 calibrated weighing scales, which were installed in the new Minglanilla Public Market and satellite markets in the town on August 19, 2015. The installation of weighing scales is in line with the im-plementation of Republic Act 7394, the Consumer Act of the Philippines which aims to ensure that consumers are protected from unfair practices and get the best value from their money.

Other municipalities in Cebu only get five scales, but Minglanilla gets 10 because of its satellite markets such as those in Barangays Linao-Lipata, Tungkil and Tungkop will get their own calibrated scales. DTI Cebu provincial director Nelia V.F. Navarro said that the weighing scales will ensure that consumers can readily check the accuracy of the weight of goods they buy in the public mar-kets. She asked the local government unit to not only regularly calibrate the scales but also to secure them from being tampered with or pil-fered. In 2015, DTI has already distributed 193 cali-brated weighing scales to nine cities and 43 towns in Cebu Province. Minglanilla Mayor Elanito Peña said that the weighing scales are really useful, considering that the officials have received reports that there are some vendors who are fraudulent in selling their goods. The mayor assured that the weighing scales will be regularly calibrated.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is warning individuals to take extra precautionary measures when investing money on a business scheme and pressed them to take the 8-point test

The warning is meant to prevent people from be-ing scammed and lose their hard-earned money to a bogus money-making scheme.

The 8-point test to determine a business scheme’s legitimacy are the following:

1) Is there a product?

2) Are commissions paid on sale of products and not on registration/entry fees?

3) Is the intent to sell a product not a position?

4) Is there no direct correlation between the number of recruits and compensation?

5) If recruitment were to be stopped today, will the participants still make money?

6) Is there a reasonable product return policy?

7) Do products have fair market value?

8) Is there a compelling reason to buy?

If the answer to all the questions is yes, then the company being evaluated is a legitimate company. If the answer is no to some questions, then there is a high probability that it is a pyramid scam.

DTI reminds consumers on 8-point test on

(Photos below) A Strategic Performance Management System (SPMS) Roadshow was conducted for members of the DTI REXMANCOM in Cen-tral Visayas on September 8, 2015 at Harolds Hotel, Cebu City. Activity resource speaker was Dir. Mary Jean Pacheco of the DTI Corporate Plan-ning Service. The SPMS is a mechanism that links employee performance with organizational performance to enhance the performance orienta-tion of the compensation system. It ensures that the employee achieves the objectives set by the organization and the organization, on the other hand, achieves the objectives that it has set as its strategic plan.

In an effort to uplift the shoemaking industry in Carcar City,

the Department of Trade and Industry turned over a Shared

Service Facility (SSF) to the Carcar United Footwear Manu-

facturers Association, Inc. (CUFMAI) on August 25, 2015.

The SSF will ensure the development of the shoe manufac-

turing industry in Carcar City in terms of quality and produc-

tion efficiency.

The introduction of new machineries and equipment such as

the hydraulic sole press and hydraulic bench type cutting

machine will allow shoemakers to press sole, insoles, rubber

sandals, and leather shoes. These machinery will also allow

them to cut material like rubber and synthetic materials. The

heavy duty stitching machine will enable them to stitch thick mate-

rials, while the insole stitching machine will enable them to stitch

upper leather, rubber insole, leather and synthetic holster.

Carcar City in Cebu province produces handmade shoes. Shoe

manufacturing is one of the major sources of income of the people

in Carcar.

The Shared Service Facility (SSF) project of the government aims

to address the gaps and bottlenecks in the value chain of priority

industry clusters through provision of equipment for the common

use of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
