From all of us to all of you, we hope that 2011 is filled with success, happiness and many accomplishments! I want to take this opportunity to thank the membership and board of directors for their support.

Volunteer boards are the backbone of non-profit organizations; without their spirit and willingness to

serve, many organizations would simply cease to exist. You see, even though the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce is fortunate enough to have paid staff members who work hard each and every day to service our members and community; it’s the volunteer board members who commit to setting the policy and direction for the organization. It’s the volunteer board who speaks with one voice on behalf of business, and even though members may not always agree with a decision or position, the volunteer board makes policy with one goal in mind…the well-being of its’ membership. It’s not enough that the men and women who serve on volunteer boards, like the chamber’s, have regular, full-time jobs…sometimes they find themselves putting in full-time hours as volunteers. We, at the Chamber, are humbled to work for such committed community leaders

Two of the Chamber’s long-standing events: the 16th Annual Sandbagger’s open (note the later date--at Comanche Trace) and Dancing With the Kerrville Stars-Back By Popular Demand featuring the ballroom dancing competition that so many of you enjoyed last year and requested that we bring it back one more time…with new dancers, of course…(May 5th at Inn of the Hills Resort & Conference Center) are already having committee

meetings in preparation for this year’s events. YoU are encouraged to join the fun; just give us a call and

we’ll let you know when the next meeting is going to be held. The Education committee is putting together the annual Job Shadowing Program on Thursday, February 3rd. We have well over 100 students interested in participating this year and are still looking for business hosts; please call Susan at the Chamber office for more information about getting involved in the great program. Later this year, the Education committee will be putting together a Speaker’s Bureau for the 6th grade students of Kerr county schools.

operation Thank You kicks off on January 18th captained by teams representing members of the Ambassadors…so the first thank you goes to this incredibly generous group of volunteers. The Ambassadors have been making ribbon cuttings, grand openings, groundbreakings and welcoming guests at chamber events for over 20 years, and although some of the names have changed, their commitment to the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce continues. Have some fun…get on a team…meet some chamber members and go for the bragging rights…who’s the best at operation Thank You? We’ll announce the winners at the January mixer.

And finally, the $2,200 jackpot at the December holiday mixer went to Allied Waste LLC. Congratulations to Allied Waste and the jackpot goes back to $500 starting next month…See you at Hill Country State Bank on the 20th!

Brian Bondy PresidentKerrville Area Chamber of Commerce kerrvilletx.com

Happy New Year! We started talking about ‘Shopping Kerrville’ back before Thanksgiving. I’m proud to say that my wife Sana and I have taken this seriously. We can honestly say that we purchased over 90%+ of our Christmas needs locally. It takes you a couple of weeks to change

the ways you think and do things and turn them into habits. We found ourselves using the phrase ‘Let’s Shop Kerrville’ when there was something we needed to purchase. And actually, we did develop the sense of ‘pride’ that I have spoken about earlier. When this pride develops, you pay more attention to local ads and you take the time to look into the faces of the sales staff and know that you are a part of them keeping their jobs secure. You will catch yourself looking behind their faces and thinking about their families and their personal circumstances that they keep hidden while they wait on you...what a great feeling.

By ‘Shopping Kerrville’, everyone can be a part of the economic development process in our community.

The dollars we spend here are redistributed by the businesses we buy from, to their employees who in turn spend their dollars with other businesses here. The sales taxes that are collected are used by the City of Kerrville to meet services and infrastructure needs with a portion going to our 4(b) sales tax. The 4(b) revenues are redistributed by the Economic Improvement Corporation (EIC) to promote economic development and quality of life projects in the City and/or the County. This cycle continues and continues, with all the benefits staying here. over time, this process creates additional ‘ad valorem’ taxes that will be used by the City, the County, and our school districts to meet their funding needs. And yes, all this starts by ‘Shopping Kerrville’. Thank you for participating!

Have you ever wondered what information was being checked during the pre-employment background check? Even in our quaint hill country community it has become second nature for a company to run a pre-employment screening, more often referred to as a background check. But what exactly is a background check, and what is being checked out anyway?

The term background check is used broadly to define any type of criminal history report. It is often assumed that a background check will automatically find any criminal history. As I investigated this topic I was shocked at the vast definitions and standards that were being used in reference to background checks. Definitions ranged from only checking a driving history to going to the county court house seeking records of criminal history. While one may sound lax and the other extreme, the point is that there are no clear standards to a background check.

A quality background check, or pre-employment screening, will review records for all reporting states, the National Sex

offender Registry, Federal Criminal Records, National Criminal Records, Social Security Number verification, and State Motor Vehicle Driving Records. With so many separate databases many companies try to save money by calling a Texas database record check a full background check, when in fact it is not. According to the most recent data from DPS, Bexar County reports only 73% of criminal charges, while Travis County reports only 12%. Even more appalling, of the 254 counties in Texas, only 106 report to DPS electronically1.

So while a quick online check may be convenient, it likely will not give you complete results. Understanding what is in a background check will help you to manage both risk and the bottom line. An informed consumer is a powerful tool, so too is an informed business owner.

Q&A:

Page 18: Kerrville Area Business Magazine | January 2011

ith the nervousness of the past year’s economic business climate, 2011 cautiously brings the possibilities of renewed business opportunities

and growth, and the hope of prosperity, that is an integral part of any new year. But, “Hope” is not a strategy. To improve our chances of business success in this current economic climate, we must have a sound business strategy and be proactive. We cannot wait for business to walk in the door. We cannot wait for an opportunity to come knocking. No, we must first create opportunities, and then we are in the perfect position to take advantage of them.

During a year like this past year, many businesses are more hesitant to invest in self-promotion. I understand this very well. In my early business career my thinking process during good economic times was; “Business is great, so why advertise?” And subsequently, when in less than optimal economic times my thinking was; “I need business, but I cannot afford to advertise!” Which led to panic. To level out this thinking and marketing process, is the strategy I’m referring to.

Now, one can sit down and create a perfect plan to help

lead to success, but “All the maps in the world will not get you where you want to go, if you don’t know where you are”. First, if it has been a few years, revisit your business plan and update if necessary. Then conduct an analysis of your business strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Now create a plan to eliminate your weaknesses and improve your strengths. This is where the pro-activity comes in. To keep your business flowing during bad times, it is important to invest in improving your business practices and communications – and ALWAYS focus on promoting your business. This applies whether you are looking to grow your business, or maintain and refine it. There are steps that can be taken now to start this process and improve your prospects for the New Year.

The story reads almost like a fairy tale: a little girl from Corpus Christi, knows from the time she is four or five, that she wants to be a nurse. Her grandmother calls her “My little nurse,” and buys her a Nurse Kit. The child performs “procedures”

on her mother, grandmother and dolls. But life intervenes and the dream of being a nurse must be put on hold, until...but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

The little girl grew up to be Lena Rippstein, PhD,

APRN-BC, GNP, the new Director of Nursing at Schreiner University. Her dream of being a nurse was deferred because first she was to become a military bride who accompanied her husband all over the world. She loved it - particularly Germany, France, Austria. She loved the adventure, the food, the people, the breathtaking architecture. She had a daughter and was very happy. It was a wonderful life. But then her husband retired, and her personal dream resurfaced.

After seventeen years of not being a student,

Lena attended San Antonio College where she completed her prerequisite courses. She went on to achieve her Bachelor of Science degree (1992) and Masters (1995) at the University of Texas, Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Nursing. She moved to Kerrville, a place she had visited and “fell in love” with, and later divorced.

In the 1990s she worked at the Kerrville Veterans Administration Hospital and then in Home Health Services, and completed her post-masters as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, hence APRN-BC: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse-Board Certified.

In 2007 she received her PhD in nursing with a focus on geriatrics.

In the meantime she met her future husband, a retired insurance agent and widower she had known from church, but got to know better “at the meat counter at HEB”. When they married, her family suddenly expanded to include her own daughter, plus six children by marriage and eighteen grandchildren, not to mention Woofgang, their miniature Daschund, and two barn cats.

Now Dr. Rippstein’s life was finally settled. She loved working with older patients and appreciated how they “laid the path for us” in so many ways. Then, one day she opened the newspaper and saw that Schreiner University was embarking on a new nursing program and searching for a program developer and director. Her heart skipped a beat. Did she want to apply? Could she give up her practice? She had many sleepless nights, because as she says, “my patients are very dear to me”. She had chosen geriatrics because of the strong bond she had with her own grandmother who nurtured her

“It hit me – look how much of

a difference I can make, how

many lives I can touch.”

desire at a very young age. Nursing was her calling. She liked helping people. Could she give that up? She prayed for guidance, and then suddenly, at four o’clock in the morning, the answer came.

“It hit me – look how much of a difference I can make, how many lives I can touch.” She knew that she would apply for the position – right in own her home town! – because if she were hired, she would be able to pass along to her students the same care and compassion she gave to her patients. They in turn would take their care and compassion out into the world.

“The time is right,” says Dr. Rippstein, “there is a greater need than there are available slots in current nursing programs. Plus, many nurses currently working are about to retire.”

Schreiner University has had a very successful Vocational Nursing program for over thirty years which has always enjoyed the support of the community and the region.

“Most changes require a catalyst,” says Schreiner President Dr. Tim Summerlin. “Undoubtedly, Estela Avery was the catalyst in the creation of a BSN degree at Schreiner. In october 2008 she brought UTSA Dean of Nursing Eileen Breslin and PRMC CEo Pat Murray to my office to urge our consideration of such a plan. Interestingly, we had been reviewing a baccalaureate nursing program for several weeks before that time. We were simmering, but, as Walt Whitman said of Emerson’s influence on his development, it was Estela Avery’s action which “brought us to a boil.”

on october 22, 2010, The Texas State Board of Nursing approved and accredited the program. This major milestone in the academic program is made possible by gifts and grants from Estella Avery, Rosemary Romero, John and Martha o’Neal, Dr.

Demmie Mayfield, The Ray C. and Mirtha Fish Foundation, the Loring Cook Foundation, and the Kemmerer Family Foundation through Comanche Trace. In addition, The Hal and Charlie Peterson Foundation has long been a partner in the nursing programs at Schreiner and shares this newest success.

Dr. Rippstein will have a busy year. Applications for both students and instructors will be processed in the early months of 2011, with classes starting in the fall. So far, even before official applications have been sent out, she has received queries from Hawaii, Kansas, Florida and Louisiana.

“Every day, I get more and more emails and telephone calls asking about the program.” At the time of application, potential students must have completed, plan to complete or be working on a wide variety of subjects, including Language, English Composition, Political Science, Communications, History, Philosophy/Ethics/Religion, as well as those in the health field such as Anatomy/Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry etc.

“Becoming a nurse will change your life,” says Dr. Rippstein. “Nurses play an integral part in the most significant accomplishments and tragedies that humans can experience.”

Dr. Rippstein is grateful to the Kerrville Chamber of Commerce for the work it does to “provide excellent opportunities for businesses to come together for the good of the community.”

Thanks to Dr. Rippstein and her vision, those at Schreiner University who complete the nursing program will be eligible to sit for the NCLEX, the national exam. They will have received a solid nursing education and so much more: the compassion and experience of their Program Director, who will be teaching one class per semester, and the support of the lovely Hill Country town of Kerrville.

There may not be such thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as a free breakfast!

The Hill Country Cowboy Breakfast started in 2004 as a way for the community to come together to kick off the 5th largest stock show in the state of Texas, the Hill Country District Junior Livestock Show (HCDJLS). This year, Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union and Hill Country Telephone Cooperative are teaming with the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce, Kerrville Downtown Business Association, and HCDJLSA to bring you the 7th Annual Hill Country Cowboy Breakfast.

The Cowboy Breakfast will be held on Friday, January 14th, 2011, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. at the courthouse square in downtown Kerrville. It is FREE to the public and breakfast is served by our local 4-H and FFA kids.

Come enjoy a hot cup of coffee from Hastings Hardback Café, a delicious homemade sausage wrap, and bust a gut at the entertainment. Thanks to the

donation of milk goats again this year from Nuluv Nubians of Center Point, you’ll probably see your banker knelt down underneath a bleating goat trying to milk her as fast as he can…or the Mayor tossing a big ole’ cow patty towards a tin bucket, trying to beat out the other local elected officials as to who can ‘throw the bull’ best. This year, County Judge Pat Tinley is issuing a challenge to his counterparts in Gillespie, Kendall, Real, Edwards, Kimble, and Bandera Counties to join in on the Cow Chip Toss contest. And don’t get wiped out by a frozen turkey headed your way-that’s just Hill Country Radio Turkey Bowling, an event sponsored by our local radio stations: The Ranch 92.3, Classic Rock 94.3 REV FM, and The Rose 99.9.

To the delight of event organizers, Opa’s Meats of Fredericksburg has pledged to provide the sausage links this year, with Mamacita’s once again providing their delicious tortillas. If you are interested in supporting our local 4-H and FFA’ers by donating to this event, come join us for breakfast and bring a little pocket change with ya…100% of donations go directly back to the kids through

the HCDJLS Association Scholarship Fund. The Cowboy Breakfast is a fun filled event for

people of all ages! For more information on the event, call the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce at

896-1155 or visit www.hcdjls.org/. And don’t forget to wear your long johns!

See y’all there!

here can I take my vehi-cle when something goes wrong and I need it fixed? This is prob-ably one of the most ask questions today and one I hope to shed some light on for you. When you need to get maintenance, service or major repairs done

to your vehicle you need to be able to take it to someone you can trust, who knows you and knows your vehicle. In addition, there are several other items you need to look for in a repair shop, such as pricing, reliability, reputation and experience. Then you have to decide if you want to take your vehicle to a Dealer to be serviced, a Chain-type Service Center or an Independent Garage and what are the advantages and disadvantages of going to any of these facilities.

Many dealerships and chain service centers are effec-tive when providing warranty type repairs or service, but sometimes…not always…you lose the personal touch. If you chose to use one of these facilities, get to know the mechanic who is working on your car, and if possible, always try to have the same mechanic work on your vehicle every time you bring it in.

A good technician will get to know your vehicle over time and will be able to discern when something major needs to be done. Typically though, you rarely get to meet the guy

working on your car and a lot of the time small issues seem to be major concerns. Another option for you and your vehicle is to use an independent garage. For anything you need done including an oil change, this may be the type of facility you want. Most of the time, they are locally owned and their employees come from the local area. A locally owned service center is not only interested in you and your vehicle, but they also have their reputation at stake. Because they get to know you and your vehicle, they can keep you advised of any potential problems before those problems actually happen…which can save you time and money. They also know that the key to their success is in building a long term relationship with you…and your vehi-cle. More importantly you keep your money local. Could it get any more confusing, you may ask?

Here are some tips to consider when shopping for a mechanic or a repair facility:

Ask around, who does your friends and family members use when they need something done to their vehicle. If they are happy with the service they have received it is highly likely you will be also. If they do good work and you are satisfied with the work they have done....problem solved. What is their warranty policy? Do they even offer a warranty when something goes wrong and if they do is it for labor only or does it cover parts as well. The longer the warranty they offer is usually indicates they feel confident the repairs/services they are performing

w

Page 43: Kerrville Area Business Magazine | January 2011

mykerrville.org | 43

will not cause you a problem after the work is done. Do they offer you your old parts? What is their affiliation? Are the ASE certified to work on your vehicle? The ASE certification stands for Automotive Service Excellence and says the mechanic working on your vehicle has passed a certain competency test to be qualified to do the work your vehicle requires. Most ASE technicians see themselves as professionals and usually will have a good reputation for doing quality work. Are they even affiliated with Trade Associations like National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or maybe a local trade association, like Texas Independent Automotive Association (TIAA) or Automotive Parts & Service Association (APSA). These associations usually require a certain amount of training/certification and they look at the reputation of the company before they grant membership.Check with the Better Business Bureau, Better Consumer Choices or some other Customer satisfaction business to see if there are complaints against the company, and if so, have they been resolved in a timely/satisfactory manner? The same thing holds true the other way; are there compliments about the work the shop/mechanic does?Do they offer to give you a written estimate or give you options on repairs that will save you money or add to the life of your vehicle. A good mechanic will stand behind his estimate within reason (there are always unforeseen problems that can pop up when doing

any repair). What fringe benefits do they offer? If you need a ride to work when you drop your car off, do they do this? or are they willing to pick your vehicle up if it makes it more convenient for you. How enthusiastic is the staff that works for the company? Do they see you not only as a customer but consider you a friend as well. A good repair facility will want this type of reputation because they know you will refer your friends and family to them as well.

Finally, don’t choose a shop solely on the price of the repair. The least expensive repair shop might not be the best place to go and can have adverse effects on the performance of your vehicle and the life of your vehicle. At the same time, the most expensive shop may not give you the best service or quality. In addition, don’t wait until you need to have a major repair performed and have to have your vehicle towed to a shop to get the repairs done. Build a relationship with the shop first, have maintenance type services performed, and get to know the person who would most likely be working on your vehicle. When some-thing major happens they will already know you and your vehicle. Your vehicle is probably one of the most expensive items you will buy besides your house so it is important that whoever works on it is trustworthy, reliable, knowledgeable and has the skills necessary to repair today’s complex vehicle. And, in the final analysis, find a shop you can trust and rely on when repairs or service are needed for your vehicle.

Kerrville, TX – December 9, 2010- Lemon Tree Cleaners delivered a check today to Sue Steele, Public Relations officer, Bank of The Hills and Treasurer of Executive Women’s Club

“We are overwhelmed by the community and local business support of our annual Baubles and Beads event. Donations are still coming in and the figure currently stands at over $50,000” said Sue. “Part of the money raised goes to fund a student scholarship, and the rest goes directly to a fund at Peterson Regional Medical Center that is managed by Dr. Barrington. It’s important to the Club that the money stays local and helps local women who would otherwise not be able to afford the things they need in their fight with breast cancer.”

“As a local business owner, it is important to me that we are giving back to the communities we serve in a meaningful way. While our donation seems like just a drop in the bucket, we hope to grow this program next year and really go all out with the pink next october! Many of the Executive Women’s Club members are our regular customers and we appreciate them and all they do for our community.” said Denny Foster, owner of Lemon Tree Cleaners and Member of the Board of

Directors for the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Do you remember the last time you learned something new? It was most likely a satisfying feeling, a thrill in the day-to-day “regularness” of your life.

Think back to your childhood. Every day held opportunities for learning at school. Was there a particular teacher who made learning come alive, whose class you looked forward to attending, because you really learned things? Maybe school wasn’t your best or only learning place…who taught you what you wanted to know? Building? Electronics?

If you are feeling a bit of nostalgia right now, you have the asset called “Commitment to Learning.” It has something to do with school; being engaged in and bonded to school, but more to do with learning. one of the Building the “C.o.R.E.” youth, when asked what she learned at the Big Tent Conference at the Brown Convention Center in Houston said, “Education and

learning are two different things!” She is on her way to embracing learning in the classroom and beyond.

What can you do today to build this asset in young people? Talk about books that you’ve read and enjoyed; together, learn about something neither of you know about; surf the web together to find things that interest both of you; mentor a child (January is National Mentoring Month).

Commitment to Learning is developed internally; difficult to see, and difficult to measure. It is critical in this fast-paced age to develop a love of learning in order keep up with new things and contribute to our world. Today, look for ways to build this asset.
