Kororo Public School

Hello Everyone,

I am very proud to be the new Principal of Kororo Public School. I’m excited to have this great opportunity to lead and

continue to belong to a school where students, parents and staff are intensely loyal, committed and proud.

I am looking forward to leading our wonderful school. In my role as principal I will continue to be an advocate for each and

every child, so that they can reach their full learning potential by engaging in quality learning activities and enjoying school

life.

Stewart House

Each year 1,700 public school children in need visit Stewart House from many parts of NSW and the ACT. During their stay,

children are provided with optometric, dental and medical treatment as well as emotional support. This is balanced with

health and educational programs and out of school activities to boost their self-esteem and to promote a healthier

lifestyle.

Children in the care of Stewart House attend a specific purpose school onsite for 8 days of their 12-day stay. The NSW

Department of Education provides infrastructure and staffing support for this school. All other costs associated with the

children’s stay are met from charitable donations.

Once the children leave school for the day they are cared for by suitably qualified supervisors overnight and at the

weekend. Meals, accommodation costs, transport and entertainment expenses as well as salary costs for supervisors, cooks,

cleaners, laundry and maintenance staff are all sourced from donations made to Stewart House. These costs amount to

some $4.5 million each year.

Stewart House’s Vision

To enable all the children who come to Stewart House to:

Have a wide range of rich and rewarding experiences

Be inspired to see beyond their present circumstances

Have real hope and positive aspirations for their future.

As human beings, we have the innate need to contribute to those around us. Whether it comes in the form of

something like being there for a friend in need or something like contributing financially to a worthwhile cause, we

realise the importance of giving.

Showing compassion and kindness can really uplift a person’s day.

A smile is a wonderful thing our students give us everyday that makes the Kororo School Community a great place

to be where everyone is respected and feel they belong and can contribute to our community!

Hope you have a great week!

From the Deputy’s Desk by Leanne Stacey

Last week Ms Horton and 8 students travelled to Sawtell Public School to participate in a training day to prepare for the Premier’s Debate Challenge. The training was provided by the Department of Education’s adjudicators and coaches to assist in preparing students for the 2019 competition.

Today several students from Kororo Public School are representing the school at the North Coast PSSA Swimming Carnival. It is a huge achievement to reach this level. The students had to qualify at 3 previous carnivals to be eligible to travel to Ballina to compete against the best swimmers from the whole North Coast. We wish all the children luck. If successful at this level the students will then compete at the State PSSA Carnival.

Congratulations to Bethany B (Year 6) selected in the North Coast Cricket team yesterday.

Last Friday all classes joined in the “Clean Up Australia Day.” Classes were assigned various areas around the school and using gloves collected a great deal of rubbish. Focusing on cleaning up around the school inspires students to discover the impact of rubbish on their local environment and how they can play an active role in their community.

Premier’s Debating Challenge Training Day On the 27th February a group of 8 Kororo Stage 3 students went to the Premier’s Debating Challenge Training Day at Sawtell Public School. The Training Day was to help us learn the ins and outs of debating and to help us become great debaters.

First off, we learnt various nifty acronyms to help us remember key skills. For example, The 3 M’s stand for: Matter, Manner, Method

PEEL stands for: Point, Explain, Example, Link

Towards the end of the day we had a practise debate to further enhance our skills. All in all it was a great day and we learned lots of useful tips and tricks to do with debating! We look forward to our first debate! Jack and Michael

The first P&C meeting of the new school year was held on Monday, February 18th, and what a turn out! Firstly a big thank you to everyone who attended, seasoned and new, it is wonderful to have so many people interested in finding out what the plans are for this year, volunteering and having a say. Items covered in the meeting include the P&C funding the following: Purchase of new sports shirts for students to wear when they represent the school at interschool

sporting events (cross country, athletics etc.)

A proposal was received from Mr Portelli requesting additional Lego Stem devices for their Stem project and competitions.

A request was put forth by Mrs Bourke for some new building and construction toys for Kindergarten and Stage 1 students.

Brightening up the Library project.

Now to raise some funds for these projects! The P&C is in the process of organising a BBQ and Bake & Produce Stall at school for the Saturday, March 23rd Election Day. BBQ bacon and egg rolls w ill begin at 8am, followed by a sausage sizzle for lunch time voters. A baked goods stall will run from 8am until sold out (think cakes, muffins, slices, cookies…..mmmmm). We will also be selling home grown produce on the day, so donations of any extra seasonal produce from your garden would be gratefully accepted like blueberries, garlic, tomatoes etc. So mark your calendar to whip up a few recipes and bundle up some herbs – more information to follow closer to the event. The P&C each year also runs the Book Fair which raises cash or credit for the purchase of new books for the library. This year it will be held from the 7th to 10th May, and is always a fun opportunity for students to browse and purchase a couple of new books, with part of the proceeds going directly to the school. Again, we’ll keep you updated as we get closer to the date. Last but not least, the P&C would like to extend a warm congratulations to Mrs Leonie Smith in her new role of Principal. We have enjoyed working with you the past year and look forward to continuing to do so for years to come! Next meeting will be held in the Staffroom on Monday 18th March. All welcome!
