Hello Everyone, 21st March 2018 Is Harmony Day. Kororo students will celebrate the day by engaging in a School Assembly and working on in class activities to learn more about Australia’s cultural diversity. Strengthening Community Harmony Australia today is one of the world’s most culturally diverse nations with a strong commitment at all levels of government to maintaining community harmony and social cohesion. New South Wales government schools reflect the social, cultural, linguistic and religious diversity of the state. Almost one third of students come from language backgrounds other than English, including overseas and Australian born, and over six per cent of students are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Students are from a range of socio-economic backgrounds, come from homes where over 200 different languages are spoken and hold a range of religious and spiritual beliefs. In such a diverse society schools have an important role to play in building community harmony through acknowledging and respecting the cultural diversity of their school communities and developing students’ intercultural understanding and sense of identity as Australians. Hello Everyone, 21st March 2018 Is Harmony Day. Kororo students will celebrate the day by engaging in a School Assembly and working on in class activities to learn more about Australia’s cultural diversity. Strengthening Community Harmony

Australia today is one of the world’s most culturally diverse nations with a strong commitment at all levels of government to maintaining community harmony and social cohesion.

Schools fulfil this role by reflecting and teaching the core values of our community. These core values (integrity, excellence, respect, responsibility, cooperation, participation, care, fairness and democracy) are set out in Values in NSW Public Schools Policy. These values underpin teaching and learning programs and are consistent with the National Framework for Values Education in Australian Schools.

The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians acknowledges global challenges for Australian education. In particular, it highlights the critical role that Australian governments and school sectors play in ensuring social cohesion and inclusion:

Goal 1: Australian schooling promotes equity and excellence All Australian governments and school sectors must ensure that schooling contributes to a socially cohesive society that respects and appreciates cultural, social and religious diversity.

Goal 2: All young Australians become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens Australian governments commit to working in collaboration with all school sectors to support young Australians to become:

• Successful learners who are able to make sense of their world and think about how things have become the way they are

• Confident and creative individuals who relate well to others and maintain healthy relationships

• Active and informed citizens who are committed to national values of democracy, equity and justice, and participate in Australia’s civic life.

(Strengthening Community Harmony Advice and resources for schools Second edition, 2014, Dept Edu) Traditionally orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Wearing orange shows support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. If you change your address or your child is catching the

bus for the first time, parents can apply

online for a bus pass at

A NOTE FROM THE OFFICE We are experiencing intermittent difficulties with our telephones. The phone annoyingly cuts out half way through mid sentence or if you are on hold sometimes. If we are speaking to you and the phone cuts out, we promise that we are not hanging up on you! Please call us back. Thanks!

Doctor Stovepipe

Students were transported back in time to the 1930s after attending the Musica Viva performance of Doctor Stovepipe, a rollicking, old-time ensemble of guitar, bass, fiddle and sweet vocal harmonies. The show was one of swinging fun, and a demonstration of how songs evolve and change as they are passed on from one musician to the next. Students learnt how the simplest sounds and stories can be turned into toe-tapping tunes; and that when it comes to making music, no road map is required.

Sport Trials As is often is the case early in the year, we have had a number of students attend sporting trials with several successful selections. Zoe P is today participating in the North Coast trials for AFL after being successfully chosen to represent the Mid North Coast. Recent district soccer trials saw Maja R, Mark M, Flynn T, Ethan H and Zac N successful in their efforts to represent at the next level on the 28th of March in Coffs Harbour. Congratulations must also go to Bethany B who made it into the North Coast Cricket team. We wish all these students further successes in their endeavours to move to the next level in their chosen sports.

DEPUTY’S REPORT Kororo Public School’s P & C Strong partnerships between a school, its teachers, parents and community ensure students reach their full potential At Kororo we communicate via: Our website Newsletters School sign Notes to parents Essential conversations A yarn School assemblies School Mobile Apps e.g. Skoolbag Kororo Families play meaningful roles in the school decision making process through parent representative bodies, committees and other forums. P&C meetings, are a way to keep parents and the wider community up to date with school operations, strategic directions, wider education matters and to build strong relationships to support our students learning and to ensure all our students reach their full potential. By sharing planning, the school and P&C can decide how best to fundraise and how funds might be allocated. Mrs Attwood who is our Relieving Deputy Principal presented a technology proposal to our P&C on Monday night. Our P& C then decided to support the proposal and made a generous contribution to the 21st century technology program. The contribution will assist our classroom teachers to make a greater impact on our students’ ability to use the latest technology to prepare our students for a successful future. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our P&C for this fantastic donation on behalf of the whole school

community. Have a wonderful week! Leonie Smith Principal (Relieving)

PBL Term 1 Week 8 Our PBL team, staff and students, have had a busy start to the year reviewing our school expectations and showing each expectation in action, within classrooms and the playground. It has been wonderful to see so many positive behaviours being exhibited around Kororo. Our current focus is respecting each other which is, valuing ourselves and others. Students have learnt more about their classmates interests and goals and shared compliments to each other. Students have recognised what respect looks, feels and sounds like and acknowledge that in their peers. Congratulations to all the students who have paid someone else a ‘random act of kindness’.

Hockey Gala Day Report

On the 1st March, 37 Kororo students from Stage 2 and Stage 3 participated in the

Hockey Gala Day which was held at the Hockey Fields. It was an excellent opportunity

for students to gain knowledge, appreciation and experience in hockey, whilst having

fun competing against and with their friends.

All 4 teams displayed excellent teamwork skills and a high level of sportsmanship;

reflective of our KPS spirit. A special mention to Charlie D who was awarded a

citizenship award on the day from Hockey NSW.

Thank you to Mrs Attwood and Mrs Dent for assisting with the organisation on the day.

This session will be held outside the school hall. This is to ensure that all students are aware of how many deposits they have made and if they are eligible for a reward, Laura will assist them ordering. If your child can’t find their wallet, please ask them to see Laura and she will issue a new one.
