Kororo Public School

Hello Everyone! Our student attendance goal for 2020 is 90% or above for all students.

The Importance of Attending School Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve

their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with

parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends

school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other

children.

What if my child has to be away from school? On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may

include:

* being sick, or having an infectious disease

* having an unavoidable medical appointment

* being required to attend a recognised religious holiday

* exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)

Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school will contact you to discuss the absence. Principals may decline to accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified. When this happens the principal will discuss their decision with you and the reasons why. Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the principal can record the absences as unjustified. Absences are recorded on Student Reports and students will be recognise for 100% attendance and will receive a Star Pupil Award. Travel Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during a school term is necessary, the Application for Extended Leave - Travel form will need to be completed. This form is available from the school office. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year. In some circumstances students may be eligible to enrol in distance education for travel periods of over 50 school days. This should be discussed with your child’s principal.

Week 4 Term 1 - 19th February 2020

Page 2: Kororo Public School · up in Week 6, it is important to make an appointment with your class teacher to discuss vital information that may impact the success of your child at school

The importance of arriving on time Arriving at school and class on time:

Ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day.

Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine.

Gives students time to greet their friends before class.

Reduces class disruption for all students’ learning.

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents. It is a legal requirement that you must accompany your child/ren to the office to explain their reason for being late. If you do not do this, your child will be marked as unjustified.

If a student misses as little as 8 days in a school term, by the end of primary school they’ll have missed over a year of school. What might happen if my child continues to have unacceptable absences? It is important to understand that the Department of Education may be required to take further action where children of compulsory school age have recurring numbers of unexplained or unjustified absences from school. One of the following actions may be undertaken: • Compulsory Schooling Conferences You may be asked, along with your child, to attend a Compulsory Schooling Conference. The conference will help to identify the supports your child may need to have in place so they attend school regularly. The school, parents and agencies will work together to develop an agreed plan (known as Undertakings) to support your child’s attendance at school. Working in Partnership The Department of Education recognises that working collaboratively with students and their families is the best way to support the regular attendance of students at school. We look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child to fulfil their life opportunities. Uniform Thank you everyone for ensuring students are wearing the correct uniform and are prepared to engage in a day of learning every day. We are very proud of our school uniform and it helps us all work together to achieve our goals. It gives a real sense of belonging and pride to be part of the school community where we value each other. Please avoid buying socks with large emblems and brightly coloured joggers. Our boys’ socks are grey and girls’ socks are white and our shoes are black with black laces. Remember to write your child/rens’ name on their jumper/jackets and hats. Please see the next page for a full description of our school uniform. Medical

During the term students who have been identified by their parents as having medical needs will be receiving

a form to update their requirements. This form is a Department of Education form that schools require to be

completed in order to complete Health Care Plans for students. We are in the process of updating our forms

and systems. Please complete the forms as soon as possible and return them to ensure our students are safe.

Enjoy your week!

SCHOOL UNIFORM THE OFFICIAL SCHOOL UNIFORM IS AS FOLLOWS: -

GIRLS:

Green/gold/white polo shirt with a Kororo School emblem, worn with bottle green culottes, white socks and predominantly enclosed, preferably leather sturdy BLACK school shoes, bottle green school hat with school name embroidered on the front. In winter bottle green jazz pants may be worn with either a bottle green school sloppy joe or zip jacket, which must have the school Logo on the front left side. Bottle green tights may also be worn under the Culottes.

BOYS:

Green/gold/white polo shirt with a Kororo School emblem, worn with grey shorts, grey socks and predominantly enclosed, preferably leather sturdy BLACK school shoes, bottle green school hat with school name embroidered on the front. In winter long grey pants may be worn with either a bottle green school sloppy joe or zip jacket, which must have the school Logo on the front left side.

SPORT: Girls and Boys

(Years 3 – 6 only) Gold polo shirt with school emblem (from the Uniform Shop) with bottle green sports/basketball shorts (not bike pants), white ankle socks & joggers. This should only be worn on the designated sport day. Shorts should not be worn every day instead of culottes. Sport appropriate clothing may be worn when representing the school as dictated by the teacher in charge.

HATS:

The School Hat must be worn before and after school at recess, lunch and any outdoor activity and excursions.

BAGS:

Bags are not compulsory but are excellent value as they are a good quality bag.

HAIR & JEWELLERY:

Hair is to remain a natural colour. Children with long hair must keep it neatly tied back with hair ties of green, yellow, brown or black. Green or yellow hair ribbons and/or clips may be worn to help keep hair tidy.

Jewellery essentially should not be worn to school. Sleepers or stud earrings are acceptable as are watches and medi-alert bracelets. Religious bangles may also be worn. Jewellery items such as necklaces, rings, decorative bangles etc are best left at home as they pose an injury risk to students during P.E., sport, recess & lunch breaks.

LABELLING:

It is STRONGLY advised that every piece of clothing be labelled. There is usually a mountain of unnamed hats and jumpers in the lost property.

DEPUTY REPORT by Mel Fenton

The unpredictable Coffs Harbour weather that has been occurring over the past couple of weeks has not been placing a dampener on the spirits of the staff and students at Kororo Public School. There has been lots of fun and exciting events happening this fortnight and as usual the Kororo students have behaved exceptionally using “safe, respectful and engaged” behaviours.

Our newly appointed Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects as well as all our Year 6 students undertook their official leadership induction ceremony last Monday with the help of their parents. The students pledged to be responsible, caring and support citizens and to maintain the high standards of students at Kororo Public School.

School Captains: Indy Pike and Andrew Martin

Vice Captains: Ava Doyle and Noah Light

Prefects: Sophie Brooks, Samuel Cunningham, Monique Davidson and Will Martin.

They looked so fancy in their school Blazers!

There will also be a Class Captain, House Captain and Technology Monitor Badge ceremony on this Friday 21st February at our morning assembly. These students will help to make up our student leadership team for 2020. Parents are more than welcome to attend this assembly.

We were blessed with the weather for our competitors only Swimming Carnival last Friday. The students all swam their best and represented their house colours with pride. I had a wonderful time cheering on the teams with the students. The age champion results are listed below:

Swimming Results 2020

The winning house on the Day was

Brelsford!

Well done to Miss Shipman for her excellent organisation. The District Carnival will be held at Coffs Harbour War Memorial Pool next Tuesday 25th February. Private transport is expected for this event.

Our Gymnastic Program is now in full swing. The Activated Group are excellent professional gym instructors who are giving our students fantastic lessons. Please ensure that you have paid for this program this week to keep your child in this program.

At Kororo PS we value your opinions and feedback. With Essential Conversations coming up in Week 6, it is important to make an appointment with your class teacher to discuss vital information that may impact the success of your child at school. Nobody knows your child better than you. We want to be able to ensure that we are supporting every student so they know that they are known, valued and cared about.

Have a great week!

Mel Fenton.
