Kandia, who is from Ubud in Bali, complained about thepresence of gypsy (unlicensed) taxis at Bali's airport usingprivately-owned vehicles. Kuta Weekly News Corner10 Jan - 16 jan 2013 (318)

Gday again punters and lets rip into the latest Kuta Weekly for another goat it. At this point in time I'm spending a short run in the land down underand boy is Bali copping some bad publicity over here. At point of hittingthe keyboard for this latest ramble I've heard, from major mediabroadcasters in Australia, about three separate incidents todate that haveseemingly rocked Bali. I don't know which one I find the most disturbing? The first one I saw was about a family that encountered a couple of

intruders in their villa in Cunggu, and needless to say the fellow at the headof the family tackled one, throwing him backwards out the window heentered the property by, however the fact that he is a fit and healthy Karate black belt didn't stop the second guyfrom stabbing him 3 or 4 times before fleeing the scene. The fellow was treated for his wounds and will live. Thefamily has decided to stay in Bali and my guess is they will bolster their security measures. There is something tobe said about buying a managed apartment when this this sort of thing happens as you have 24/7 security andgenerally one door in and one door out. The second was a story about a young fellow from Perth who went to Balito party for the break and ended up on Lombok skulling some peculiar type cocktails and feeling a tad crookafterwards etc. etc., in short, he has ended up being medi-vacced to Royal Perth Hospital for serious treatment. After seeing this on the news for a few days the story ended up on the front page of the state's daily newspaper toannounce that the young bloke had lost his battle and sadly passed. You can only imagine the distress in thathousehold, terrible stuff.

The third story was about a lady from Queensland, living in Bali, that was found floating face down in her pool. After a night shift she knocked off at 3am and went for a few quiet ones with some of her friends then retired backto her villa. As the story goes she was found floating face down in her pool, somehow alive and was raced to thehospital to be pronounced dead on arrival. All these are obviously terrible news stories out of Bali and not

something that anyone likes to hear or read about, but, this thing happens all the time. These things happen allover the world, all the time and shouldn't be slammed on the news wires as the worst thing that has ever happenedin the world. You can have your house robbed anywhere. You can drink something crook on any continent, andafter drinking a few quiet ones with friend at the end of a busy Christmas shift you can drown in a pool anywhere.

The fact that this has all happened in Bali and that a trillion people come here from Australia each week is thereason these news agencies milk the absolute hell out of the story's and try their best to, ever so slightly, misdirectthe readers into believing that it only happens in Bali. This is simply not the case. It seems to me that theseincidents are being investigated by the local authorities and my guess is, they will get to the bottom of most of it.Indonesia has some of the best police investigators in the world, some of which have been trained by high levelAustralian squads and don't think for one minute that they will leave one stone unturned with a view to protectingthe interests of Bali. The Balinese have been catering for tourists for many years and the fact that they do things alittle different to the way things are done at home, make no mistake, they seem to get the job done.

There are good and bad elements everywhere and people should exercise common sense when it comes to thingslike home security and personal safety. No different to how they would if they lived on the wrong side of the tracksin Italy, London or Spain. It's the way of the world unfortunately and it's something everyone needs to be aware of.If I had read an article about the traffic in Bali being gridlocked every day during the busy holiday periods, I would

agree and concur whole heartedly, but to slam the islandbecause of a few terrible happenings is wrong as crime andcriminals are everywhere.

Ok folks I hope I haven't offended anyone too heavilyand trust that you all keep reading the Kuta Weekly inearnest each week. I hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always remember, "he who fails t oplan is planning to fail."

    Enjoy your week.

JIMBARANJimbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This

was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tinyfishing village with a daily market. That all started tochange in the 1980s and Jimbaran is now home to severalworld class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few moremoderate mid-market hotels.

There is however little in the way of budgetaccommodation and there are also many h igh-end villas inthis area, particularly on the ridges of high ground aboveJimbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the"Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row".

The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beachand is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilledseafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist drawin the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset.

Jimbaran is also home to a Norwegian University,Gateway College, with around 500 students studyingathletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism. The school is located in Kedonganan close to Sari SegaraResort and in Jl, Bantas Kau where it also has a small cafe.

Jimbaran has an increasing number of rather chicshops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has theadvantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyakand the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

BALI, LOCATION TO SUIT EVERYONETHE BUKIT

Much has been written about this dusty, aridand rugged area, which forms the southernmost tip of the island.

Limestone cliffs of up to 100 meters inheight provide some of the best views in the

world, along with some deserted white sandybeaches.Everyone wants a piece of this are, from

international hotel chains such as Bvlgari,Versace and Banyan Tree, to establishedresidential villa developers looking for thatperfect plot. The area offers secluded beaches, and exclusivity to name but a few reasons whythis is fast becoming the place to be.

Prices have more than tripled in thearea over last 2 years alone with still plenty ofpotential to be realized, so now is a plan. Only ashort 15 minutes drive fromthe international airport, The Bukit is fast beingreferred to as the new Millionaires Row.

Bali current season ofheavy rains has promptedauthorities to place the BaliDisaster Mitigation Agency

The Jakar ta Postquotes the head of the BPBDBali, Dewa Made Indra, whosays he has pu t theEme r g e n cy R e sp o n seSystem (ERS) in Bali on ahigher stance of readiness torespond effectively to anynatural or man-made disaster.Said Indra: ?During this seasonof heavy rains, various naturald isasters wil l l ike ly occur

    Indra warned that some

areas of Bali were prone tolandslides, floods and strongwinds citing the regencies ofBuleleng, Bangli, Tabanan andKarangasem as among the areas

most at risk. Flooding is a concernin parts of Bali's capital ofDenpasar due to poor drainage.

"I think the combination of awelcoming culture, the greatweather, the affordability and itsproximity to the United States allgo together to make it a goodpackage," Dan Prescher, thespecial projects editor for thesurvey said.

"Panama has a lot of thesame things going for it, but it isn'tquite as affordable as Ecuador,"he added in an interview.

    The survey analyzed dataa n d i n f o r m a t i o n f r o mcorrespondents in the countriesmost popular with American andCanadian retirees to compile the

results, which were based on ahost of categories, cost of living, climate, property prices,

    h e a l t h ca r e , e a se o fi n t e g r a t i o n , r e t i r e m e n tinfrastructure, entertainment andamenities and special benefits forretirees.

A large part of Ecuador'sappeal is how inexpensive it is forretirees. A beer costs just 85cents. A doctor's visit is $25,

roughly the same price as a one-

hour massage."Sen io rs res iden t inEcuador qualify for half-priceentertainment and local transport, discounted airfares and refunds ofsales tax," Prescher added.

Panama, which came in aclose second, won praise for itspensioner visa, which speeds upresidency, retiree discounts onmedicines, entertainment andrestaurants, and its friendlypeople.

Malaysia, the only Asiancountry to make the top five, drewretirees to its shores with itstropical climate, low cost of living

and cheap rents, similar factorsthat boosted Mexico and CostaRica's appeal to retirees.

    Most of the better countries

for retirees were Spanishspeaking, including Uruguay,Colombia and Spain. Thailand, which placed ninth, was the onlyother Asian nation to make the topten, thanks to its affordability, exotic locales and outdoorlifestyle.

Although the language maydiffer, Prescher saidretirees adapt easilybecause they usuallychoose a country with aculture familiar to them.

"Most people knowor can learn enoughSpanish to get along," headded.

Malta squeezed inat No. 10, winning pointsfor its very low crime rate,Mediterranean climateand abundance of Englishspeakers. English is the

Ireland, France, Portugaland Italy were other EU nationsthat made the ranking of 22countr ies, a long with thePhilippines and New Zealand, which scored the worst for thecost of living, along with France, but ranked high for integration.

"The places that have beenpopular with expats for the lastfive to 10 years tend to stay in therankings unless somethingdrastic happens, a big political oreconomic change," Prescherexplained. (Notice Bali didn't get amention? AJ)

HINDU CEREMONIES OF BALISARASWATI DAY (HARI RAYA SARASWATI)

Saraswati Day is celebrated on the12thJanuary 2013, the very last day of the BalinesePawukon calendar, being the Saturday of itslast week, Watugunung.

Dewi Saraswati is generally referred to asGoddess of 'Science & Knowledge'.Dewi Saraswati is the female counter-part ofthe Balinese god Dewa Brahma, themanifestation of the Almighty Infinite Spirit asthe Creator.

The spiritual symbolism of SaraswatiThe materialistic world views that

dominate the modern world we live in, havecaused considerable mis-interpretations ofthe religious symbols found in BalineseHinduism. The main reason for this is ageneral loss of the ability to think in'parallels', to communicate in symbols and

analogies. Instead, modern man tends tointerpret most religious symbols literally.Nowadays the Knowledge/Science

symbolized by Saraswati is generallyinterpreted as pure secular, scientificknowledge; at libraries offerings are madefor books and other important writtenmaterials, such as the lontar; books and(written) language are seen as the vesselsof secular, scientific knowledge. At theschools and universities the students prayfor success with their studies. DuringSaraswati Day it is not allowed to read, which can be compared with our 'oneminute silence', in honour of the 'gift' ofbooks and language which enables

mankind to pass on the scientific knowledgethat leads to secular success.

In itself these 'modern' interpretationsdo no harm as far as the importance ofsecular, scientific knowledge for theeducation and development of the worldycareer of the individual is concerned.

However the loss of the originalinterpretation of the religious symbols, theiractual meaning, does serious harm to thespiritual development of the Balinese as an

individual, and to the spiritual progress ofthe Balinese as a people. And since the spiritua lsymbolism is universal, loss of spiritualconsciousness concerns not only the Balinesebut all of mankind, as individuals as well as arace.

Unfortunately, the true Knowledge ofSaraswati, the knowledge of the mathematicalscience that defines the octaves of existence, and which rules and controls the cycles of life ofall manifestations (also referred to as sacredgeometry), and which enables mankind to be atrue Master of his life, is not taught in our schoolsand universities, nor is it taught by our religiousleaders.

    Nearly 250 matchesworth of Test experiencehave been drained fromt h e l i n e - u p b y t h eret irements of RickyPonting and Mike Hussey.

Not to mention thehuge loss of battingmentor Justin Langer, andnow the departure of his successorStuart Law announced by CricketAustralia on Sunday.

With an Indian seriesbeginning next month before theAshes tour starts in July, the timingof the mass exodus could not beworse.

Captain Michael Clarke hasalready made it clear there is noway of replacing the intellectualproperty that has been lost.

But the next best thing CAcan do is handpick a battingcoach capable of bringing thebest out of a new generation ofbatsmen.

Australia knew they werelosing one of their most valuable

assets when Langer left to takeup the coaching role at WesternAustralia, but the loss of theformer Test opener has beencompounded by the retirementsof Ponting and Hussey.

The batting line-up headinginto India and the Ashes is almostentirely unsettled.

However, the right battingcoach can help ensure young andinexperienced players build theirskills, handle their new

responsibilities and avoidbeing caught in the headlightswhen under pressure.

A permanent specialist is yetto be decided upon, but DeanJones will work with the side for thefirst two one-day internationals

    against Sri Lanka startingthis week.

Other former greatsare likely to help outthroughout the rest of theODIs.

"We're yet to finalisethe broader batting coachrole so this opportunity tohave some former playerswith us as specialists duringthe (ODIs) will be invaluablefor our young squad," saidcoach Mickey Arthur."I thank Stuart (Law) for his

outstanding contribution over thepast s ix weeks - we a redisappointed he is not in a positionto consider the full-time role.

"We have quite a young ODIsquad at the moment with a firmeye on the 2015 ICC Cricket WorldCup, so to have the knowledge ofone of Australia's best ever one-day players (Jones) with us for acouple of games will be invaluablefor the group."

    Dear Martha,

I spent 2 weeks onholiday in Bali overXmas & New Year; it

was fantastic exceptfor the traffic. Thetraffic in Bali washorrendous in all theusual tourist spots &at Simpang Siur. Itwas in total grid lockin Kuta on New Year'sDay & was consistently slow & hazardous atSimpang Siur whenever we went that way not tomention the airport which was a total disaster! Iappreciate that an underpass & tollway arecurrently under construction, however, will thisreally fix the traffic problem? I would suggest that itis a short term fix & given 3 years it will be back tothe chaotic mess that it is now. Somebodysomewhere has to be accountable for the trafficcongestion that I saw whilst holidaying there, apartfrom it taking 2 hours to get from Jimbaran beachto Kuta (which is totally unacceptable), the roadsare dangerous with bikes & cars vying for 'poleposition' at traffic lights, bikes just pulling outwithout looking & police cars driving on the wrongside of the road with sirens blazing to get throughthe traffic. I can only describe the roads in Bali as amess! There needs to be direction & enforced roadrules from 'the powers that be' to resolve theproblem so that Bali can grow.

    Kate

Dear Kate,Couldn't agree with you more dear. The traffic iscertainly worsening on a daily basis & is atrociouswhen there is a national holiday. Perhaps a signerected at all entry points with 'Sorry Bali is full' mightbe the answer?? Although removing all the drunktrouble makers could be a better solution.

down the 141 runsrequired to beat SriL a n ka w i t h f i vewickets in hand inSydney and sweepthe series 3-0, withHussey (27 not out) inthe middle to see thehosts home.

The Aussieslost wickets at regularintervals as the crowdrepeatedly chantedfor Hussey to comeout and cap off a fairytale finish toa wonderful Test career, alongsideMitchell Johnson (1 not out).

"I couldn't have dreamed ofit, I can remember when I hadn'teven played and Jason Gillespiesaid to me 'I reckon you've got 50Tests in you, Huss'," he toldGrandstand.

"I laughed at him straight inthe face.

"I said 'no way, mate', I wasalready probably 30 years of age,I would have bitten his hand offright then (to get 50).

"To go on and play 79, to bepart of a World Cup and an Ashes-winning team, that's what it's allabout.

    Michael Hussey's Test career

"I've exceeded anything Icould have ever dreamed of, andthe game's given me so much, so Ifeel very fortunate."

Hussey leaves the long formof the game with a sterling record, averaging 51.52 with the bathaving scored 6,235 runs for his

    country.He thanked the SCG crowd

for their send-offs throughout thefour days of cricket, but said he

was hoping the batsmen abovehim could get the job done withouthim.

"I'm a little bit embarrassedabout [the send-offs], to be honest- the support has just beenoverwhelming," he said.

"I can't believe it and I've gotto thank the Sydney crowd somuch because they've beenabsolutely fantastic.

"There's always pressure, that's what Test cricket is all about.I was hoping not to bat, I washoping we would have got the runsnone down, but it was nice to goout there and be there close to the

    end."To be there with

Mitchell Johnson wasbrilliant, it 's anotherAustralian win and I'mvery proud.

" I w a s h o p i n gMichael Clarke and Ed Cowancould get through to tea becausethe crowd were beginning to callfor one of them to get out, and Iwanted to make sure that both of

them stayed there andfinished the job.

"It was great to get out there.I admit I was a bit nervous ... you

just don't want to letanyone down there, andI'm just proud to be out

    there."Passing on themantle

Wicke t -keeperMatthew Wade, who hita gutsy 102 in the firstinnings but was bowledout by for 8 in thes e c o n d , l a u d e dHussey's performancesthroughout his careerand said his farewellwas a fitting one.

"What a Testmatch, awesome. It was alwaysgoing to happen like that, MrCricket was ... always going to batout there for the winning runs,"Wade told Grandstand.

"The crowd's been amazing, the whole Test match. [Hussey is]a little bit embarrassed about it, hedidn't want any fuss over him, butunfortunately it was always goingto happen."

Hussey steps away fromTest cricket and, while he has yetto retire from the limited oversgame, he was omitted fromAustralia's squad for the first twoODI matches against Sri Lanka.

But his younger brotherDavid will continue the Husseytradition in Australian gold, withMichael wishing him all the best.

"I hope [David] goes well, it'sa great opportunity for a lot of guysnow around the Australian team,"Hussey said.

"We'll see which one's goingto stand up and take hisopportunity and be part of the nextgeneration of Australian cricket.

"I hope it is [David], he reallywants it, but we'll really have towait and see."

Scientists spot elusive giant squidScientists and broadcastersin Japan say they havecaptured footage of anelusive giant squid up toeight metres long thatroams the depths of thePacific Ocean.

    Japan's National ScienceMuseum succeeded in filming thedeep-sea creature in its naturalhabitat for the first time, workingw i t h J a p a n e s e p u b l i cbroadcaster NHK and the US

Discovery Channel. They spotted the squid at a

depth of 630 metres using asubmersible in July, some 15kilometres east of Chichi island inthe north Pacific Ocean.

The submarine with threepeople on board, includingTsunemi Kubodera from themuseum, followed the enormousmollusc to a depth of 900 metresas it swam into the ocean abyss.

NHK showed footage of thesilver-coloured creature, which hadhuge black eyes, as it swam againstthe current, holding a bait squid in it sarms against the backdrop of darkoceanic depths.

The creature was about threemetres long, but estimated to be aslong as eight metres if its two longarms had not been chopped off,Kubodera said.

"It was shining and sobeautiful. I was so thrilled when Isaw it first hand, but I was confidentwe would because we rigorouslyresearched the areas we might findit, based on past data."

He gave no explanation for itsmissing arms.

He said it was the first videofootage of a live giant squid in itsnatural habitat - the depths of thesea where there is little oxygen.
