MORTGAGE ENQUIRIES JUMP MORETHAN 50 PERCENT SINCE ELECTION,REPORTS DEVERE

There has been a“noticeable surge inserious home loanenquiries” since the

election, reports deVereMortgages.

The observation from deVereMortgages, part of deVere UnitedKingdom, which offers advice toBritish expats and to foreignnationals looking to buy propertyin the UK, comes a week afterDavid Cameron returned as PrimeMinister following theConservative’s surprise majority.

deVere’s Head of UK FinancialPlanning, Kevin White,affirms: “Since the electionoutcome was announced ourmortgage consultants havereported a noticeable surge inserious home loan enquiries. 

“Demand for mortgages hasbeen strong all year, but thevolume of enquiries has increasedby more than 50 per cent over thelast seven days, compared to theprevious week.

“The majority of theseenquiries were from overseasbuyers and British expats whowant to purchase a UK propertybut who had been, for variousreasons, waiting to see theoutcome of the election beforepursuing.”

Tom Elliott, InternationalInvestment Strategist at deVereGroup, comments: “It is to beexpected that there was asignificant uptick in mortgageenquiries in light of theConservative win. It appears thatinvestors held off in fear of a left

wing government taking power.“The UK property market

should benefit from DavidCameron’s government.

“There will be no Mansion Tax,and indeed property will beslightly less taxed if theConservatives carry out theirpromise to exclude propertyunder a certain value frominheritance tax.

“More generally, the electionresult has confirmed that Britainremain a pro-business, pro-

“The likelihood of continuingvery low interest rates (supportedby this week’s Bank of Englandinflation report) will also fueldemand.”

Brighton i360 beach landings, the start ofbuilding the world’s tallest vertical cable car

Barges have started to arriveat Brighton Beach fromHolland from first light onJune 11, delivering the

steel cans which will form thetallest new UK visitor attractionoutside London, conceived anddesigned by Marks BarfieldArchitects, creators of the

internationally acclaimed LondonEye.

The Brighton i360, which will bethe tallest vertical cable car in theworld, at 162 metres high, is beingconstructed by an internationalteam, bringing together specialistdesign and engineering from theNetherlands, France, Germany, Italy,Spain, Australia and the UK.

David Marks, Chairman ofBrighton i360 Ltd, said “Todaymarks a major milestone in theconstruction project, with thecompletion of the foundations andthe start of an exciting new phase,when the i360 starts to come out ofthe ground and reaches for the sky.”

Julia Barfield, Co-ManagingDirector of Marks Barfield Architectsadded “Ten years ago, we set out ona journey to bring the i360 toBrighton. After all the preparationand planning, it is fantastic to see itall coming together.”

and now the project will be goingup, up, up! The tower build startson Monday.”

A 100-metre high crane hasstarted to unload the 17 speciallyfitted out steel cans, eachmeasuring between six and 12metres, directly onto the beachand, using a giant jacking tower,

will be joined together to build theshaft which will carry a futuristicviewing pod allowing 200 visitors ata time to enjoy a new perspectiveon the fun-loving seaside city ofBrighton.

Seven thousand tonnes ofgravel, shingle and chalk have beenmoved to create a platform for thedelivery, whilst a 4,000 tonneconcrete foundation has been builtunder the ground to balance outthe towering feat of engineering.

The tower will be completed thissummer and then open in summer2016, when the pod has been builtand added to the tower and thevisitor centre at its base iscompleted, to incorporate a 400seat restaurant; a shop; children’splay zone; exhibition space; tearooms; and conference and eventfacilities. Brighton residents andvisitors will be able to marry, partyand have fun in the beach building,and then glide 450 feet up forspectacular views of the city andbeyond.www.brightoni360.co.uk

PomaThe i360 glass pod, drivemechanism and the ride controlsystem are designed and built byPoma. Poma is an 80 year-old worldleader in ropeway transportationbased in Europe, with subsidiarieson five continents. To date, Pomahas built over 8,000 installations inover 80 countries. Poma was alsoresponsible for constructing the 32‘capsules’ on the London Eye.

As ‘academic as a school of whales’ and ‘as organised as a stringof sausages’, the Punch and Judy College of Professorspromotes and represents performers of the ancient show acrossthe country.

The first record of Punch and Judy in Brighton is from around 1940and essentially consists of a complaint from a performer that the showhad died out here, perhaps following Queen Victoria’s withdrawal ofpatronage of the resort. However, the railway opened the following yearand the show reached unprecedented levels of popularity over thefollowing decades.

Our local ‘Professor’ is Glyn Edwards who has run exhibitions andshows in and around Brighton Fishing Museum since 2011. Prior to a gapsince 2000 when Mike ‘Sgt.’ Stone was banished from the beach, Punchand Judy has beenperformed on the fishingbeach since Victoriantimes. Other showsexisted near theAquarium, by the WestPier and on Hove Lawns.Punch and Judy is mucholder than this though.Its first reference was in1662 by Samuel Pepys –353 years ago. Even theVictorians thought ofPunch and Judy as old.

The opening ofBrighton FishingMuseum in 1992 iswithout doubt one ofthe tourism successstories of modernBrighton. Indeed, thecontribution of itscreator and custodian, Andy Durr, was recently marked by the unveilingof a brass plaque following his death last year.

I recall the western portion of the Fishing Museum as storage. Thearch’s mezzanine floor was revamped in the mid-1990s but was madeaccessible by resident carpenter Alex Briault in the mid-2000s with theaddition of a staircase and gallery. Indoor Punch and Judy shows takeplace upstairs, above exhibitions on the West Pier and BrightonSwimming Club.
