Each year a theme isselected and a book ischosen for the commu-nity to read and discuss.The theme for 2008 is“China and America:

Bridging Two Worlds,” and the book isThe Eighth Promise: An American Son’sTribute to his Toisanese Mother byWilliam Poy Lee. The author and hismother will speak at WashtenawCommunity College on Friday, January 25,at 7:30 pm. Everyone is invited to attendthis free event.

YDL-Whittaker Road will host three discussions about The Eighth Promise: Monday, February 11 at 7 pmThursday, March 6 at 10:30 amWednesday, March 19 at 8 pm.

Dancer-turned-photojournalistRose Eichenbaum captures the characterand vitality of the greatest dancers of ourage in her revealing portraits and dramaticperformance shots.

Accompanying each photograph are inter-view excerpts documenting the dancers’candid reflections on life, work and pas-sion. The exhibit gives a rare glimpse of the inner workings of artists such asMikhail Baryshnikov, Jacques d’Amboise,Jose´ Greco, Bill T. Jones, Ann Reinking,Chita Rivera, Russ Tamblyn, Tommy Tune,and dozens of other choreographers and dancers.

January: Michigan Week Youth Photo ContestTo celebrate Michigan Week, young photographers ages 9–19 were asked to photograph their favorite Michigan historic sites. Among the places they chose are the Presque Isle Lighthouse, theSaginaw River Rear Range Lighthouse, and the Lowden Schoolhouse. Two of the winners are Ypsilanti residents.

February: PrintmakingArtists Tim Gralewski and Ben Bigelow,both MFA graduates of Eastern MichiganUniversity, will display their fine art prints.

March: Carolyn WeinsCarolyn Weins’ pastel drawings (above,right) are inspired by nature and influ-enced by light, texture, the moods ofcountry roadsides, wetlands, woods, and fields.
