LEON B. DERAPS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ANNUAL NEWSLETTER

10 Year Commemorative A sincere thank you to all who help make our event successful

The Leon B. Deraps Scholarship was formed in late 2006 to honor Leon’s life of service to his beloved community. The five mile walk/run was born out of a need to finance the scholarship.” Thus far, we have been blessed with the honor of awarding thirty-nine Jamestown graduates with the scholarship. The deadline for scholarship applications is Friday, April 15th. In other News, we are very happy to announce that this year our guest speaker will be Kirby

Baumert. “Coach” Baumert is retired now after 33 years of service to Jamestown C-1 School. Not only was Coach Baumert” one of Leon’s favorite teachers, but he is very active and beloved member of our community. He has always been a huge supporter of the walk/run. We are also excited and honored to announce that the Jefferson City Marine Corps League has offered to take charge of the concession stand and grilling hot dogs at the finish line of the Walk/Run this year. At twelve o’clock, after the walk, there will be a Mass for Leon at Cedron Church.

The Deraps family would like to thank everyone for their support for the past 10 years. After much reflection, we have decided to end the Walk/Run after this year. It's been 10 years since our brother gave his life for his country and we never want to forget that. With the amount of money that we have saved we will continue to give out scholarships in Leon’s name as long as possible.

Thank you again for your generosity over the years. We are so proud to be part of a community that cares so much about honoring our fallen hero. We are honored to carry on Leon's spirit of generosity and service by giving scholarships to deserving high school seniors. The Deraps Family

Leon Bertrand was born at our Jamestown home on a bitter cold morning November 13, 1986, our “Bonus Baby”, strong with a sweet disposition. As our “Caboose”, he was protected and raised by his two older brothers who taught him to take a punch and get up grinning, his three bossy sisters who fought over the little guy to small to win an argument, his veteran Mom who believes in meals to set your clock by, taught him patience to pick a row of green beans clean and to kneel at his bed and pray, his Marine Corps veteran father who taught him to hit the deck running, good to go, not to slouch at a flag ceremony and how to sharpen his knife, and a community best described as “salt of the earth”. He grew up running in the soft hills and creek bottoms of the Missouri River valley. Always obedient, he was a good student, anyone’s friend, loved by all, and answered to Buddy, Bud, Uncle Lon, Bert, and Bird Man.

Leon went through Cub Scouts, Webelos, and earned rank quickly in the Boy Scouts. His achievements include 35 Merit Badges, the Order of the Arrow, a Rocky Mountain High Adventure Trek, National Boy Scout Jamboree 2001, Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, Philmont Scout Ranch Expedition 2002, Cimarron, New Mexico, all troop leadership positions, & many service projects and Camporees.

Under guidance from veteran scouter, Richard Schroeder, Leon’s Eagle Project was the recovery of the abandoned Hardiman-Beatty AME Cemetery, just north of Jamestown. He was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout March 13, 2005.

Leon participated in many sports at Moniteau C-1 School in Jamestown including Baseball, Basketball, and Track and field. He was also a member of the FFA. He was voted Prom King his senior year, 2005. Leon enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, and off roading with his jeep (when he wasn’t pushing it!). He was an active member of Annunciation Catholic Church, California MO. Leon was employed at Advanced Chimney Techniques of Jamestown, and Cal’s Thriftway, California MO before graduating School. Leon graduated High School in May 2005. He left for the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA in June 2005. Because of his Eagle Scout achievement, Leon entered the Marine Corps as a Private First Class. In September 2005, he graduated basic training with many of his proud family members cheering him on. He went on to complete Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, California, and Engineers School in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. With his training completed in

February 2006, he was deployed with members of his engineers unit to Fallujah, Iraq. Leon died during combat operations against enemy forces, May 6, 2006. However, “If the Army and the Navy ever look on Heaven’s scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines”. He still stands his post and he’s the one with the big grin, ear to ear.

The Leon B. Deraps Scholarship was formed in late 2006 to honor Leon’s life of service to his beloved community. The five-mile walk/run was born out of a need to finance the scholarship. So, in early May of every year, Leon’s family, friends and community members gather to celebrate his life by walking, running, and riding the five miles from Advanced Chimney in Jamestown to the Assumption Catholic Church in Cedron (where he is buried). The route through the scenic countryside is beautiful and is thoroughly enjoyed by all.

“I am very thankful to have received the Leon Deraps scholarship last year. This scholarship has helped me with not only my first semester of college, but also my second. The Walk/Run/Ride has always made me feel appreciative to be a part of our wonderful community. Every year, people from all over come together to remember Leon and to support Jamestown students. It is truly a beautiful sight.”

–Abigail Couch

I am thankful to have received the Leon Deraps scholarship last year. It has helped me with my first year of college. The Walk/Run/Ride is a great event that draws our community closer and helps out our students. I have been to almost every one of the Walk/Run/Rides, and helped direct traffic, set up water stations, and help clean up, and they are great events.

T-shirt Sleeve Logo

Logo In case anyone was wondering about the new logo that the Leon T-shirts were sporting last year, we thought we would provide some back-story. Sandy Deraps had the fortunate opportunity to bump into Capt. Eric Spencer at the Assembly of God chicken dinner in 2014, who so very generously offered to pay for the cost of the shirts, and asked to put the emblem on the sleeve. He has also agreed to pay for the cost of the shirts again this year!! We are proud to represent and support our service men and women of the National Guard. Thank you Capt. Spencer!

"Being among one of the few recipients of this scholarship, receiving the scholarship was a great honor for me. Accepting the scholarship was not just about receiving money for me; it tells me I am seen as having potential for the future in our community. I've got to make sure of my responsibilities and make sure I give back to this great community. When I represent something I try to represent at the fullest, so I am going to do the best I can to make everyone appreciative who has put in time, money, and effort into the L.Cpl. Leon Deraps Memorial Walk/Run/Ride and making the scholarship possible. I am very thankful that I have been able to participate in the annual walk/run/ride and thankful to receive the scholarship that has helped me on my journey to receive my masters in AgBusiness at Mizzou after I complete my bachelor’s degree in a couple of years at Missouri Valley College."
