Shopping LocallyBenefits You

It is fun to holiday shop outof town, use catalogues orbuy gifts using the internet. We all do it. We like to havelots and lots of options. Butdid you know that youmight get it cheaper orfaster locally, improve oureconomy and save local jobsall at the same time?

Consider that buying locallywill save you money ongasoline, shipping/handlingcharges and you might justhave some real fun in theprocess by exploring hun-dreds of our local business-es. The biggest benefit forthis year is you might just

help keep some of yourfamily, friends and neighborsemployed who work forour local retailers.

From 2011 through 2012our community has addedmany new stores andrestaurants for you andyour family to explore.Another way to help is ifyou order merchandiseonline or in a catalogue, have it shipped directly tothe local store. This savesyou money and time andallows for local sales tax tobe collected to supportlower property taxes and abetter quality of life. Onlarger ticket items you mayfind that many of our localmerchants are willing tonegotiate a price and alsoget you a faster installationthan by shopping out oftown.

Another way to keep dol-lars at home this year is topurchase Little Apple®Dollars from our Chamber. This city-wide gift checkprogram allows the giverpeace of mind in knowingthe recipient has a widevariety of choices as towhere they can spend theirgift in Manhattan. There isno cost for the gift check soevery dollar goes to the

recipient. Little Apple®Dollars may be purchasedat the Chamber office, 501Poyntz Ave., Mondaythrough Friday from 8 amto 5 pm or may be pur-chased by phone, 776-8829,using a Visa, MasterCard orDiscover Card.

By spending your dollarslocally you reinvest in yourown local economy. Localbusinesses pay local employ-ees, buy local supplies andservices and pay local taxes.Your dollars spent inManhattan support schoolfunding, public services, parks, roads, law enforce-ment, fire protection, socialservices and contributionsto local charities. Youdirectly improve your ownquality of life by shoppinglocally. In fact, according toeconomists a dollar spenthere this holiday seasonmay circulate up to fivetimes within the community.

Have a wonderful and safeholiday season and takesome extra time to spendwith your family and friendsand join me and my familyas we enjoy all the wonder-ful holiday events planned inour community.

Military Update

Kansas IncomeTax Changes

I encourage all businessowners to talk with anaccountant or tax attorneyregarding the 2013 Stateincome tax changes. Seewww.ksrevenue.org/pdf/2012legislativechanges.pdf foran in-depth breakdown ofthe changes.

The key component of thechanges is the exemption ofnon-wage business incomefrom Kansas taxation.

Non-wage businessincome is:• Net profit from business reported on Schedule C

• Net income from rental activities, royalties, part-nerships, S corporations, estates, trusts and net farm rental reported on Schedule E

• Net farm profit reported on Schedule F

Changes for S-Corporations andLLC’s include:• Net profit reported on Schedule E is exempt from taxation (Note that salary received from an S-Corporation is still taxable)

• Net losses reported on Schedule E are not deductible

What this means forindividuals:• Taxable income is exclud-able and taxable loss is non-deductible in deter-mining Kansas AGI

• Gain/loss on disposition of business property is a taxable event for Kansas purposes

• Residents of Kansas exclude income and deductions of all non-wage business income regardless of where the business is located

• Remember that an employee’s income from wages in not business income and is taxable, while income earned by an independent contrac-tor is business income and is exempt from taxa-tion

Also note that net operat-ing loss will only be avail-able to corporations. Netoperating losses sustainedby individual taxpayersprior to 2013 cannot becarried forward.

Please consult youraccountant or tax attorneyto determine how thesechanges may impact yourbusiness.

On November 7th our Military RelationsCommittee had the pleasure of hearing theSenior Commander of the First InfantryDivision and Fort Riley, BG Donald M.MacWillie, address community partner-ships, best practices of support andempowerment moving forward as theArmy draws down forces and moves into apeacetime regime. He thanked our commu-nity for its loyal support and love andhopes we will adjust with the Army to“offer support but not dependence” to ourmilitary service members and their fami-lies. We must remember the ever changingneeds of our Army, our soldiers and theirfamilies as we embark on 2013. Now, morethan ever before, our support in new andunique ways is a mission of the MilitaryRelations Committee and MCL.

Our veterans, the soul of our military, areshowcased with pride during the month ofNovember every year. This year, onNovember 9th, our community cametogether to march down Poyntz Avenue tosay Thank You to all of our veterans. Ourparade showcased Ft. Riley, our localschool children, Veterans of Foreign Wars,American Legion members, as well as anumber of local businesses and specialinterest groups. This parade is quite theundertaking, but is pulled off flawlessly bythe Flint Hills Veterans Coalition andKansas State Army ROTC. Our MCL playedan integral role in the planning and execu-tion of the entire day, capped off by aChamber sponsored luncheon for key mili-tary and veterans group leaders.
