The Clarion Hotel is gettingready to reopen as the first-ever Four Points by Sheratonin the state of Kansas. Afterwell over $5 million dollars ofrenovations, the hotel hasbeen renovating the propertysince May 2012 and is finish-ing the final touches to com-plete the transition in March2013. The outside of the hotelreceived a new look with theremoval of the exterior bal-conies and extension of theoutside-facing guestrooms. These new guestrooms aresignificantly larger and have a

"suite-type" feel to them.

The atrium (formerly the"holidome") received thebiggest cosmetic upgrade, with the removal of the putt-putt golf course, fountains, and bridge. This space hasbeen leveled out and carpet-ed, and will serve as a socialarea. This area added close to10,000 sq feet of additionalspace for groups and conven-tions for vendor expos, hospi-tality areas, etc.

As the Manhattan communitycontinues to grow, the hotelis committed to their missionof providing first-class servic-es to the thousands of gueststhat come through the doorsannually. As they go throughthis vast and exciting trans-formation to a more upscalefacility, the hotel will signifi-cantly enhance the experi-ence for their valued guestswhile maintaining the sameoutstanding customer serviceand individual attention thatvisitors have come to expectwhen walking through thedoors.

Thank you to the following members of the Chamber Champions and Chamber Diplomats for volunteering to help with registration at the March Business After Hours: Christine Benne,

A Vote for SmallBusiness

Tomorrow, Tuesday, April2nd, is an incredibly impor-tant day for our local busi-ness community. Why?Because tomorrow we goto the polls to vote in CityCommission and SchoolBoard elections. This elec-

tion won’t generate thebuzz of national and statecontests, but the impactson local business are likelydirect and immediate.

Under 20%... that’s theexpected voter turnout intomorrow’s local election.Folks, that’s pathetic! Lessthan one in five registeredvoters – our families, friends, employees and co-workers – take time toelect our local decisionmakers. No matter ourindividual political leanings, issues related to education, quality of life and the distri-bution of local taxpayerdollars must play a largerrole in the consciousness ofour community.

Please find your way to thepolls tomorrow andencourage those around

you to get out and vote.Polling locations and officialcandidate lists for local CityCommission and SchoolBoard races can be foundon the Riley County Clerk’swebsite under “Voter Info”.

There are plenty of excuses– it takes time, burnoutfrom divisive state andnational races, lack of infor-mation on candidates. Let’sbe proactive about ourcommunity’s future. Votingin local elections is a valu-able investment in yourbusiness and our businesscommunity as a whole.

March has been a whirlwind month of “Welcome Home” and“Thank you for Serving” for our MRC. With our installationofficially sitting in a “full nest” position, we have everyonehome in our community. That means more hands to shake, more people to thank and more relationships to build. As ourmilitary undergoes many changes, both fiscal and force-centric,it is more important than ever to extend our hand of commu-nity to our military service members and their families. Wemake the difference for our soldiers and their families as theyserve their tour here in Northeast Kansas and we must neverforget that. As Spring begins to peek out, we are in the plan-ning stages for our annual Kaw Valley Rodeo Military FamilyAppreciation Night, this year taking place on July 25th, 2013. Ifyou or your business would like to become a sponsor for thiswildly popular, heavily anticipated event, please contact AlisonPulcher: (785) 776-8829, [email protected] for moreinformation.

The Small Business Council March meetingfocused on a dialogue between small busi-nesses and the City of Manhattan BuildingOfficial, Brad Claussen. First, Chamberstaff gave updates on the Manhattan retailsales for 2012, which topped 1 billion dol-lars but that the first two months of 2013are down 6%. The most recent informa-tion from Fort Riley was also passed alongwith regards to current fiscal year budgetcuts and sequestration. Many of the con-tract positions at the fort are being phasedout and the possibility of furloughs formany of the civilian employees may have aneffect on the Manhattan economy. It is tooearly to tell the size of the impact sincethe federal government may make budgetmoves that minimize the cuts.

Brad Claussen, Building Official for the Cityof Manhattan, presented the backgroundand process of code adoptions. It wasnoted that there are multiple opportunitiesin the process for input and amendments

to the codes and that it takes over a yearfor codes to be adopted after new onesare published every three years by thenational associations. There was also dis-cussion regarding the Americans withDisabilities Act (ADA). Codes dealingwith ADA cannot be amended becausethey are federal law, therefore there isnothing local government can change orhave flexibility on. Council members alsoasked questions about specific issues andwere provided with feedback.

The next Small Business Council meeting isApril 10 at 7:15 am in the Chamberboard room. All chamber members arewelcome to attend. If you have any ques-tions regarding the Small Business Council, please contact Patrick Lee at N ZoneSportswear (776-3234 ext. 201 or 341-9177) or Trent Armbrust at the Chamber(776-8829).
