Health PreparationsBefore Departure:• Discuss continued medical/immunization/mental health treatment with your doctor.• Dental Exam• Compile all medical/health information and bring it with you in case of a medical emergency

Traveling with medication:• You CANNOT mail medication – bring enough for your entire time abroad• Pack all your medication in your carry-on only• Medication must be in original containers with a copy of your prescription• Notify SUA’s Assistant Director of Student Services of special storage requirements for medication

• You are responsible for ensuring you are adequately covered abroad

• Review your current insurance policy for possible coverage

• You are expected to pay up front for the cost of a doctor’s visit

Insurance Abroad

International SOS Card

Packing• Pack one carry-on with all of your valuables/medication(s)

• Pack one larger suitcase for the semester (your checked luggage)

• DO NOT pack items not easily replaced (birth certificate, social security card, etc.)

• Check with your airline(s) for baggage restrictions and fees

• Contact a Global Ambassador for packing tips

Before Departure: All students must register their international travel with ISOS MyTrips .

Group Flights:

• Virgin Atlantic flight departs JFK on Monday, August 28th at 9:30 p.m. (deadline May 13th)

• Arrive at least four hours before the flight departs.

• Verify that connecting flights arrive on the correct day, at least four hours before the group flight departs

• Complete the travel questionnaire in TDS and confirm your group flight

Independent Travelers:

• Complete the travel questionnaire in TDS and upload your itinerary

Departure

Group Flight:

• Arrives August 29th at 9:40 a.m.

• London staff will meet you at the airport

• Buses will take you from the airport to the Faraday House

Independent Travel

• Arrive on Tuesday, August 29th by 10 a.m.

• Detailed information on where to meet the rest of the group will be provided

• Coordinate own transportation to Faraday House

At the Faraday House:• You will receive your keys for your flat

transportation to your assigned flat.

Arrivals

Orientation• Attendance is mandatory for all on-site orientation meetings

• A detailed schedule will be sent to you prior to departure

• General Orientation (includes safety overview)

• Living in London

• Academic Orientation

• During this time, you will also have the opportunity to get your Student ID & Access Card, attend a walking tour, and enjoy a Welcome Dinner with students, faculty, and staff

Housing

• Students will live in flats (3-8 students), arranged in advance, based on housing preferences form (due May 12)

• Flats located in city center (Zone 1), within 30 minutes of Center by bus, tube, or walking

• Oyster card provided for unlimited travel in zones 1 & 2 for the semester

Included with each flat:• Keys• Wi-fi• Maintenance• Council tax & utilities• Standard visitor policy across all properties• Damages clause built into contract• Kitchen supplies

On-campus housing must be canceled by July 1st

Academics AbroadCourse Registration• All students have received an academic

packet• Students must complete the Student

Advising Form with advisor’s signature by May 1st

• Online class registration June 13th - 16th

• Hold off on making personal travel plans until your registration is finalized abroad

Academic Accommodations: (if applicable)

• Complete the Request for Accommodations online questionnaire

• Contact your ODS counselor

Expectations Abroad

• Students are bound by Syracuse University’s Academic Integrity Policy

Cell Phones:

• Bring your US phone for use pre- and post-semester travel

• Students can purchase a prepaid cellular phone plan or a SIM card for an unlocked U.S. phone

• Many apps provide free texting, calling, & video chatting with WiFi (Whatsapp, Viber, Skype, etc.)

Using Your Devices Abroad:

• You will need a plug adapter for all appliances

• You may also need a converter

• Pack all valuable electronic items in your carry on only

Technology

MoneyContact your bank:

• Let them know how long you will be living abroad

• Notify them of your travel plans (while abroad)

• Ask about affiliate banks abroad• Ask about international fees

• Do NOT bring large amounts of US Dollars

• Create a budget for shopping, traveling, & spending abroad

• Optional: bring a small amount of local currency

• Review the financial information section of the online Preparing to Go guide
