EDITORIAL “Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems society” O n a Sunday morning, it was thought provoking and quite disturbing to read the newspaper that over 12 tons of garbage had to be removed from Marine Drive, Mumbai as the ocean returns our contribution of waste towards it. It gives us a warning that if we care the nature the nature will care us. The relationship between humanity and the environment is a delicate balance. Life has been possible only on our planet because of a certain balance in natural elements like air, water, earth, soil etc. Without this environment and its desired balance, our Earth would have been another dead and lifeless planet revolving round the Sun. Pope Francis at his speech at Manila said “As stewards of God’s creation, we are called to make the earth a beautiful garden for the human family. When we destroy our forests, ravage our soil and pollute our seas, we betray that noble calling.” Pope Francis has called for urgent action to stop climate change and proposed that caring for the environment is as important as our traditional works of mercy such as feeding the hungry and visiting the sick. It is our collective and individual responsibility to preserve and to be sensitive to the nature we live in. Finally as I conclude, I urge each one of you to rise to the common vision to protect our nature and leave a safe environment for our successors. Don’t wait for someone else rather let each one of us be the change agents. Stewardship - a Responsibility Fr. Joby Ayithamattathil Executive Director Safeguard our environment C hristian concern for the environment has become increasingly important in recent years. The environmental issues have left the people with lots of signs of certain areas that they have to rethink. 'Laudato si' is the second encyclical of Pope Francis, where he clearly highlights the need of the present day. Church understands nature as God's creation. So often, the environmental issues are dealt with against a background of fear and threat. We have always thought that, we should stop doing some activity otherwise another environmental problem will happen. Caring for the Earth for the Christians is as a proper response to a loving, creating God. Caring for creation is a key Christian task. Pope John Paul II has called for Christians to respect and protect the environment, so that through nature people can "contemplate the mystery of the greatness and love of God." Reverence for the Creator is projected through our daily environmental responsibility. We have not made ourselves. God brings them into being and sustains them in existence. It is to the Creator of the universe, that we are accountable for what we do or fail to do to preserve and care for the earth and all its creatures. For "The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it." (Ps 24:1). Dwelling in the presence of God, experiencing ourselves as part of creation we should get to feel that we are stewards within it, not separate from it. As faithful stewards, fullness of life comes from living responsibly within God's creation. Stewardship implies that we must both care for creation according to standards that are not of our own making and at the same time be resourceful in finding ways to make the earth flourish. It is a difficult balance, requiring both a sense of limits and a spirit of experimentation. Even as we rejoice in earth's goodness and in the beauty of nature, stewardship places the responsibility for the well-being of all God's creatures. As stewards, let's join our hands to the care of the nature today. My name is Sagar Bhaskar Ahire. I live

in Baba Nagar, Shivaji Nagar in Govandi with my family. I had dropped out of school in 6th Std. I started working in a catering shop and used to collect scrap from the dumping ground. I liked to study but was helpless due to my economic problems. One day Gyansaathi teachers had come to our area. They visited my house and met my mother and requested her to send

me to Gyansaathi as e d u c a t i o n i s v e r y important in life. I took admission in Gyansaathi and continued my studies. Now I am studying in 10th Std and I also completed MSCIT course. Women from the villages have taken

n e w t u r n w i t h t h e facilitation of Karunya Trust. Karunya Trust has created awareness and helped women to march forward. For generations, in villages people tend to b r i n g t h e w o o d f o r cooking as they all use m u d s t o v e w i t h o u t knowing the effect of smoke on their health. To

collect the wood from forest, women have to spend lot of time and energy. S e e i n g t h e condition of women, during the Self Help Group m e e t i n g s t a f f f r o m Karunya Trust gave the information on Ujjawal Gas scheme implemented b y g o v e r n m e n t a n d motivated women to avail this scheme which will

save their t ime and i m p rove t h e h e a l t h . Women felt encouraged and took the initiative to apply for Ujjawal gas scheme. Women worked day and night to collect t h e d o c u m e n t a n d succeeded in the mission. Today 150 women have benefited from Ujjawal Gas scheme and 100 forms are in process.

We see water issues in urban as well as

in the rural but in rural areas, people walk miles to fetch water. In summer season it is worst when rivers and well get dried. Women find it difficult to bring water from distance which affect their health. Karunya Trust decided to give the spring of water to the villages where there is no water. Knowing the situation of villages Karunya Trust i m p l e m e n t e d S u j a l Project in 3 villages Mulgaon , Varechiwadi and Devloli. “We were carrying water from the farm houses which were very far. In rainy season we had a hard time carrying water on the head. But we thank Karunya Trust for drilling t h e b o r e w e l l a n d providing the water facilities. It is our great need”, Said Sunita. Sujal Project is God's blessing to more than 75 families who got safe and clean drinking water.

NeverNeverGiveUp to Katkari and Thakur tribal community. There is a small hamlet of tribal community and it has 2 wells around 25 years old, one is used for drinking water and another for washing clothes. Village Grampanchayat does not renovate, clean nor take care of its maintenance. The compound of wells and washing clothes platform were broken. It was difficult for women to wash the clothes and fetch

water. They had to travel far to get water and in the summer season the heat affected their health. In this village Karunya Trust has been working on the formation of SHGs and made them aware of their unity and guided them on how to appeal to Gram Panchayat and get the work done. The women

became aware of their problems and struggles and decided to be united and work on this issue. They took the leadership a n d s u b m i t t e d t h e a p p l i c a t i o n t o G r a m p a n c h y a t a n d Panchayat Samiti but they gave negative reply. But still women did not give up. They

visited the village leader and made him aware of his role and responsibility t o w a r d s v i l l a g e development. Inspite of discouragement of political leaders and government, women did not give up and l o s e h o p e b u t w i t h enthusiasm and courage they fought one year to get the work done. Today they have succeeded in their aim and the villages wells are c l e a n e d a n d t h e surroundings repaired. The l e a d e r s h i p o f wo m e n brought happiness to all the families. Now women save their time and energy and also send their children on t i m e t o s c h o o l . T h i s a c h i e v e m e n t b u i l d s confidence in women.

As the purse is emptied the heart is filled.”
