As we close in on the end of the 2014 season, fall is in the air. The first signs of autumn have already started to appear on the trees and soon the brilliant color will creep down the mountainside. We are beginning to experience a few cool nights here in Lake Toxaway so bring your sweater when you come up to the lake for the weekend. 2014 has been an exciting year for all of us here at the club. Since January, we have welcomed 27 new member families, and an additional 12 member families have joined since October of last year. There is great momentum thanks to the tireless work of the various club committees, and we are extremely grateful to all of those who have served this year. The Croquet Committee, House Committee, Golf Committee, Tennis Committee, and the Executive Committee have all committed a tremendous amount of time behind the scenes, and have worked closely with staff to help enhance the overall club experience. The Executive Committee has hosted 3 town halls, 3 virtual town halls, 4 informational chats, and 13 focus groups in addition to their regular monthly meetings. The combined commitment of each of these committees is making Lake Toxaway a better place for everyone. There are still a number of great opportunities to enjoy the club in October and November beginning with an Italian Wine Dinner on October 1. The Golf Member-Guest Stag day will be held on October 8, and the Tennis Falling Leaves Mixer will be held on October 18. A special Oktoberfest Dinner will be held on October 23. The club will continue the tradition of serving a bountiful spread on Thanksgiving Day in the Main Dining Room. Make plans now to spend the holiday with your family in Lake Toxaway. Two Thanksgiving seating times are available -- 12:00noon and 2:30pm. Because this is a special event, reservations must be made in advance by November 21. The cost for the bountiful feast is $29.95++ for adults and $16.95++ for ages 4 to 12. You may make the your reservations on the club website or by calling the club receptionist. As we close in on the end of the 2014 season, fall is in the air. The fi rst signs of autumn have already started to appear on the trees and soon the brilliant color will creep down the mountainside.

Golf Course Superintendent Update

Unfortunately, the scheduled September greens core aeration did not go as planned due to wet weather, but we were still able to use solid tines to create smaller holes in the greens. These small holes will promote healthy air-gas exchange in the turf, and we will still have a full aerifi cation in November. While we would have certainly preferred a full aerifi cation last month, the wet conditions prohibited us from applying the heavy sand top dressing required. We are currently scheduled to begin on November 3, and due to the time of year, we expect the process will likely take a full week to complete.

In addition to the work on the course, we core-aerated and top dressed the tees. The tees are a little different from the greens as the sand does not have to be as heavy and can have multiple days to dry before dragging it into the holes. We also decided to go ahead and core-aerate the Learning Center greens on September 11.

On September 8 and 9, we completed a process called “Dry Ject” to theapproach areas around the greens. This process utilizes water pressure to inject sand into the profi le of the turf. It will serve to help fi rm these areas and give a head start on eliminating excessive thatch through aeration and topdressing. The pictures show the holes fi lled with sand throughout the area.

The wet conditions prevented us from completing all of the holes but we hope to fi nish at later date.

Moving forward our plan is to be aggressive with aeration of the fairways starting in November once we complete greens aeration. This will include core aeration, verticut, and heavy sand topdressing incorporated into the holes. It is very important that we begin the process of improving the thatch issue in the fairways as it is a multi-year process. We also plan to begin aeration of the rough in late September as this will have minimal disruption to play.

As everyone can see we mowed the high grass areas down and are working to eradicate the weeds throughout. We have a plan in place to improve the weed problem in these areas as we look to next year. We also plan to mow this area twice each year rather than just once. Adding an additional mowing will enable us to be more effective with our herbicide applications. Everyone should see a signifi cant improvement in this area next season.

Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or comments: (828) 966-9613.

Sincerely,Mike SmithDirector of Golf Maintenance

CROQUET

Nancy Buebendorf, Carol and Gary Harden, Don Molitor, Kenny Lovett and George Bagwell. George and Jane received aid from a large group of Croquetnuts to assist in continuing to make this a highly successful sanctioned USCA event. George Bagwell continued to amaze us with his skills and was able to make it to the fi nals and lost in a hotly contested match with Michael Albert from Cedar Creek. Once again our lawns shined bright. As a result, the USCA has chosen the LTMC and the LTCC to host at least three Golf Croquet National Championships over the coming years with the fi rst of these starting in 2015. The sun shines on us in more than one way.

Many special thanks to the Club for our new fountain that has already gotten rave reviews. The friendly club staff continues to demonstrate its commitment to great food and attentive service, while the club’s Executive Committee has shown their ongoing commitment to keeping our lawns pristine and among the best surfaces to play in the world. We owe them many thanks and a hearty round of applause.

As we wind our season down, the fi nal Wine & Wickets will be held September 29, followed by our Annual Cookout. We all know it will be well attended. The lawns will remain open for play except on scheduled maintenance days so keep your mallets well oiled and come on down and play. Many thanks to all you CROQUETNUTS for another fabulous season for the LTMC.

Croquet Update...

Wickets Hello CROQUETNUTS! It seemed like only yesterday we were anxious to begin the start of spring and another season on the lawns. Now it is October and we are all thinking, “Where did the time go?” Well, it went to another incredibly successful season for the LTMC. Our membership has grown, our players have improved, our facilities are continually looking better, corn on the cob is becoming the LTMC mascot and Croquet continues to fl ourish in Western North Carolina.

Thanks once again to Les, Gene, Alex and Kevin for serving up another well attended “Picnic on the Lawn”. Corn and BBQ Chicken were the stars of the event and fun was had by all. Our fi nal “Feast with Friends” featured The Friends of Panthertown reminding us of the glory and wonder that is Our Back Yard. It would not be surprising to see new hiking poles that look like croquet mallets.

The season ending Mountain Club Challenge for all WNC Mallet Clubs was held at Chatooga this year and 10 teams participated. Ted Mullet fi elded a formidable group of Croquetnuts to challenge the fi eld. Although we did not emerge as the ultimate winners, we presented strong challenges to all our opponents. Thanks Ted for being our Interclub leader and for

taking on the challenge again for next year.

The LTMC Golf Croquet Invitational Tournament once again was an amazing success. Competitors hailing from Canada to Florida descended on our lawns. Thirty four top players participated, including our own

From our Fitness Director...

I would like to extend a personal note of gratitude to each and every one of you for your wonderful support throughout the 2014 season. It seemed to me to be a particularly challenging and yet truly gratifying summer. I believe it is the combined sense of responsibility and dedication that makes it so rewarding to be a part of the Lake Toxaway Country Club. Thank you for the surprise “mile marker” birthday wishes and gifts and the valued prayers and support during my husband’s surgery. We are better individuals for being a part of this magnifi cent community.

I hope you will join me in extending sincere appreciation to my staff here for their constant hard work and support. This facility would not run as smoothly or as effi ciently without them. Gina Stano, CPT and Group Exercise Extraordinaire’s last day is Wednesday, Oct 1. Please extend your good wishes to her as she returns to St. Andrews club in Boca Raton. Gina has brought a level of energy and vivaciousness that is only rivaled for by Tony Smith. Who can forget the Italian singing personal trainer from the past two seasons?! I appreciate and value them tremendously.

Please make note of the change in hours of operation mid October and then as we move forward into the “off season.” We are open Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, New Years Eve and New Year’s Day. Please call ahead for any training appointments (828) 862-6571.

Wishing you all the best and looking forward to 2015.

2014 Dam-to-Dam Swim!

Once again Elaine and Bart Boyer invited grateful swimmers to begin from their dock adjacent to the Cardinal Dam. Martha Ohaus and her family continued their long tradition of serving as the happy destination, complete with balloons, donuts, towels, water, and an enthusiastic welcome. The swimmers and their monitors benefi tted from perfect weather.

The result was a record 34 swimmers and a larger number of boats, canoes, kayaks and paddle boards to shepherd them along the way. The Ohaus lawn assumed a carnival atmosphere as a large group of supporters, including President David Dew and the clinic’s Jaime Roy, gathered to applaud the arriving swimmers.

Among the notables were regulars Steve “English Channel” Rogers, Suz “Every Year” Waddington and Dining Room Manager Chris Cooper. Katherine Jeter set a new record as the oldest swimmer and Grace Porges was the youngest. Special recognition went to Deborah Cook who won the coveted “Most Courageous” title. The Swim is not a race so we can say that every participant was a winner!

This October, The Greystone Inn by Natural Retreats, Lake Toxaway Company and Lake Toxaway Charities has teamed up to offer a fun way to help raise money for Lake Toxaway Charities. Established in 1975, through generous donations by Lake Toxaway property owners, Lake Toxaway Charities supports 32 agencies within Transylvania County that lend assistance with medical, education, housing, and food. “Helping Those In Need To Help Themselves.” Starting in October on Sunday at 2:00pm we will be offi ng a 1-hour special "Cruise for Funds" tour of Lake Toxaway aboard The Miss Lucy. The $10 per person activity fee will include champagne, a historical narration of Lake Toxaway and our community, and 100% of the cruise proceeds will be donated back to Lake Toxaway Charities as a gift. Chip Brown, Chairman of Lake Toxaway Charities, is excited for this donation opportunity “This partnership continues the long time support of the Lake Toxaway Company and now brings ‘on board’ Natural Retreats, as a key Lake Toxaway Community volunteer as we strive to meet the many human needs of our surrounding

Transylvania County residents. This is an excellent way for our Lake Toxaway Community residents, Lake Toxaway Company and Country Club, and Natural Retreats to ‘give back’!”
