March 2010 Student‐Led Conferences
Student Name: __________________________________
Math and Science – This conference should take about 15 minutes.
The following table outlines the responsibilities of students and parents in our student‐led conferences.
Students are expected to describe, explain, justify and respond to parent questions regarding the items
listed in the chart. Parents, your role is to question, support, and celebrate your child’s work and their
learning
Focus Questions for Parents to Ask…
Science • Science Fair Project: Describe your project. What did you learn? What sorts of
problems did you encounter while conducting your research? Are there any
limitations/flaws of your project? Show your written evaluation (in your
portfolio)
• How do you use a microscope? Demonstrate – using the given slide.
• Persuasive essay on the most important organ system of the body – which one
did you choose to defend. Describe your arguments for and your counter‐
arguments.
Math • What are your strengths and weaknesses? How could you continue to improve
in your math abilities?
• Percents: Do you know how to calculate percents (sales tax, discounts, and
commission)? Can you solve the following question mentally? If not, use a
paper/pencil/calculator to demonstrate your process:
• E.g. Indigo is selling the book The Lorax for $20.00. This week the store is having
a 40% discount on any purchase. What is your total cost (taking into account
the discount and the GST of 5%)?
• Did you have problems solving the question?
• Statistics: Discuss the term “bias”. Own the Podium – how did you initially rank
the countries (by point system, by gold medals, or by total medals)? Did youchange your ranking system after the 2010 Winter Olympics? Why or why not?
What’s your bias?
• Olympic Crystal Ball & Star Athlete: describe your prediction and how did you
calculate your prediction (trend line, mean, median, or mode)? Why did you
use this method over others?
Work Habits • Has there been an improvement in your work habits since the first term? If yes,
give examples and be specific. If no, why not?
• Do you come to class on time and prepared to work? Do you bring necessary
supplies (e.g. a pencil, pen) to class?
• How often do you check your email or the blog to check for homework? What is
your “back‐up” system for keeping track of your homework?• During lessons do you consistently listen attentively to instructions?
• How often do you have homework? Have you missed completing any
homework this semester?
• Have you thought about how to improve your study skills? Do you feel
comfortable preparing for and writing tests? Are your methods of studying the
same for math and science?
• How many days or hours do you spend studying for exams?
