ARRIVING IN LONDONIf you are an international student flying into London it is most likely you will arrive at one of London’s three main airports:■■ Heathrow, the largest of London’s airports

in the south west of the city■■ Gatwick, in the south of the city■■ City, the closest to Cass but has mainly

short haul flights to Europe

Slightly further out from town are Stansted Airport in Essex and Luton Airport to the north.

Taxis and MinicabsYou will probably have a lot of luggage with you when you arrive so a taxi or minicab might be the most convenient way of getting to your accommodation. Beware of taking a black cab though as these can prove very expensive, especially from Heathrow which can take an hour or more by road.

A more economical way of getting from the airport would be to take a licensed minicab. These will normally offer you a fixed fare so you know in advance how much you will have to pay and can be booked in advance so they will be waiting to meet you at the airport.

The Heathrow Airport website gives some advice on traveling by taxi or minicab. www.heathrow.com/transport-and-directions/taxis-and-minicabs

OTHER WAYS OF GETTING INTO LONDONHeathrow ExpressThe Heathrow Express is the fastest rail route into the centre of London from Heathrow and will deposit you at Paddington Station in 15 – 20 minutes from where you can then connect with the London Underground network or take a black cab to your final destination. Tickets for the Heathrow Express are

considerably cheaper if booked in advance. www.heathrowexpress.com

Heathrow ConnectThe Heathrow Connect is another train service that runs into London Paddington station where you can connect with the London Underground network or take a black cab to your final destination. If you buy a ticket for the Heathrow Connect make sure you board the correct train, if you try to board a Heathrow Express train with a Heathrow Connect ticket you will be charged again. www.heathrowconnect.com

London Underground & DLRThere is a London Underground station at Heathrow on the Piccadilly line. This is probably the cheapest route into central London from Heathrow but it is the slowest and there are usually lots of steps at the stations that you will have to carry your luggage up and down! Be careful if you are travelling on the weekend as some stations close for repairs on Saturdays and/or Sundays. Check the TfL website before you travel: www.tfl.gov.uk

The Underground does not run to Gatwick airport.

London City airport is served by the Docklands Light Railway which connects to the Underground network at Bank station.

Gatwick ExpressThe Gatwick Express is the rail route into the centre of London from Gatwick airport and will deposit you at Victoria Station or London Bridge station where you can connect with the London Underground network or take a black cab to your final destination. www.gatwickexpress.com

Moving to LondonLondon is arguably the world’s most cosmopolitan city

and Cass is certainly a reflection of this.

Our academic staff hail from all five continents and every year we welcome students from around 100 different countries onto our Master’s degrees. Studying and living at the crossroads of the City of London, London’s historic financial district, and Tech City, the world’s largest cluster of digital start-ups outside of the USA, is a great opportunity to develop your knowledge and networks.

All accommodation applications are handled online. You can apply as soon as you accept a conditional or unconditional offer for a full time Master’s at Cass.

You can see the available student halls on the accommodation website at www.city.ac.uk/accommodation/postgraduate. To arrange a tour of the halls in person, you should email the Accommodation Team: [email protected].

Accommodation offers for all students are sent out in rounds on specific days. When you receive an offer, you will be notified of the deadline to accept. Rooms are allocated on a first come first served basis.

All accommodation offers for all students will be sent by email. For that reason, it’s important to check your junk and spam folders in case any messages are misdirected due to inbox filters.

Dates for decision making will be available on the accommodation website so please check there once you have applied.

If you are interested in private rental rather than moving into halls, the University can give you advice as well as pointing you in the direction of some lists of available accommodation. You can find out more on the website: www.city.ac.uk/accommodation/private-housing

HOW TO OPEN A BANK ACCOUNT IN THE UKYou should aim to open a UK bank account as soon as possible after you have fully completed registration at Cass. It can take some time to open an account and you may wish to visit more than one bank before making a choice.

You may want to consider what each bank offers before deciding. The types of account differ, so check carefully.

To open an account you will have to complete an application form from your chosen bank or building society. You will have to show proof of your identity (e.g. passport), your UK address and student status (e.g. a letter from Cass, you will need to order this from us online once you have completed registration).

You may also need to make an initial deposit into the account. It may be helpful to bring references from your bank at home, if you already have one. Some banks may ask for additional proof of your overseas address or other additional documentation. We recommend you speak to an advisor at the bank before deciding where to open an account.

REQUESTING A BANK LETTER FROM THE UNIVERSITYOpening a bank account in the UK can be difficult to arrange for international students; therefore we try to facilitate this process by supplying an Introduction to UK Banking letter that the banks have deemed acceptable. You can request a bank letter from us online once your MSc programme has started and you have completed in person ID checks.

Once you have this letter, you need to take it to your bank with your passport, plus any other documents your bank may have specified, to open your account.

Please note: Some banks have restrictions or requirements for opening a bank account, for example, a minimum amount of time remaining on your visa or course or separate proof of your overseas address.

TRANSFERRING MONEY TO THE UKThe safest way to obtain money from home is to transfer it direct to your UK bank

UK banking for international students

Student tip“My advice would be to

start opening a bank account as soon as possible, as getting an appointment can take a while. The appointments are usually booked online and you will need a letter from the Course Office to confirm you are a student. When at the bank make sure you ask for a contactless card as they can help you pay for public transport until you get your oyster card! ”

Kenza Aghedar – MSc in Marketing Strategy & Innovation

ADVICE■■ Print your course admission

letter and have it with you for opening a bank account.

■■ Basic bank accounts are easier to open than any other type of account.

■■ If you change your address, you should inform your bank immediately.

■■ Please note that bank letters can only be produced from the formal start date of the course onwards.

account. You should check how much it would cost to transfer the money, as the charges differ. When transferring money, ensure that you keep copies of the transfer documentation in case the money is not transferred in time or there are other problems. You can transfer your money either by electronic transfer or by banker’s draft. Electronic transfers are quicker and your bank will be able to advise you on necessary arrangements. Banker’s drafts are slower but cheaper. A draft is drawn up by your home bank, and you can then present this to your UK bank when you receive it.

Summer SchoolJongik Chang,

Cass London Summer School

“ I totally recommend the Summer School for future MSc students at Cass. I studied the Introduction to Quantitative Methods module and am now a student on the MSc in Corporate Finance at Cass. The intensive and well-organised Summer School curriculum helped me to prepare to study more advanced modules on my MSc course in Term 1, especially the ‘Statistics’ and ‘Theory of Finance’ modules. I learnt basic quantitative methods and how to apply these in financial studies during the Summer School, so it helped me to understand more why different methods should be used depending on the situation. Also, all my previous studies were only in my home country, South Korea, where the teaching and assessment styles were totally different. The Summer School was really good to get me used to studying in the UK. Furthermore, I could make friends in same or similar courses during the Summer course before the Master’s started.”

Electives

■■ INNOVATION IN ORGANISATIONSThis module gives students a holistic understanding of the multiple forms that innovation may take in organisations, challenges to innovating in organisations, and some approaches to managing innovation in a large organisation setting. We draw on a range of managerial (especially strategic management and organisation theory) literature, along with psychological and sociological theories, in order to examine this complex but strategically important topic for managers.■■ INTRODUCTION TO PYTHON

This module provides a fundamental understanding of computer programming with Python and its applications in finance. Students learn how to write and execute simple Python programmes using finance examples. Programming topics covered include the introduction of different data types, control structures and programme design with functions. The use of conditional statements and loops are widely used in finance and students learn how those concepts are being dealt with in Python by looking at different finance examples. ■■ STRATEGY CONSULTING SKILLS

This elective gives students the opportunity to perform a simulated strategic assignment in the form of a case typically used in the training programme of a major Strategy House. Students need to work effectively as a team enacting the role of strategy consultants. The module also includes classroom teaching to help students gain an in-depth understanding of what entry levels junior roles in Strategy Consulting entail.

■■ PRIVATE EQUITY INVESTMENTThis module provides students with a broad appreciation of private equity and gives a useful introduction to careers in the private equity sector. It is taught by Edgar Miller, a Senior Visiting Fellow in Finance, at Cass. Edgar has a 35 year track record in private equity, having served as a general partner in private equity funds on both sides of the Atlantic since the 1980s.

INTERNATIONAL ELECTIVESMost MSc courses offer the option of at least one international elective, taught in an intensive block format similar to an executive education course, normally over three or four days. In 2017/18 we are offering the following international electives:■■ New York, USA – Investment Strategies■■ Madrid, Spain – Project Finance■■ Helsinki, Finland – Start Ups■■ Mannheim, Germany – Procurement■■ Dubai, UAE – Global Real Estate Markets■■ Singapore – Monetary Policy■■ Amsterdam, The Netherlands – Real Estate

Fund Management■■ Bologna, Italy – Strategic Innovation in

Hyper Competition

These international electives give you the chance to get an added perspective to your studies in a different environment and often include visits to local organisations and/or local guest speakers.

CASS BUSINESS SCHOOL MSc PROGRAMME 19

These term three modules give you the chance to tailor your studies to cover your specific interests, deepening your knowledge of your specialist field or adding breadth to your studies by providing insight into a complimentary area.

As many electives are open to students from a number of different MSc courses they are also a great opportunity to expand your network and work with students from different disciplines. The Start Ups elective, for example, enables management and finance students to work together analysing a business and coming up with practical recommendations, using their differing areas of expertise, on how that real life business can develop.

Electives are very often taught by Visiting Lecturers, many of whom work in finance, consulting, marketing etc. They teach on a part time basis giving our students a real up to the minute insight into what is going on in business.

Some of the most popular electives we offer include:■■ MERGERS & ACQUISITIONS

Taught by Professor Scott Moeller, former Global Head of Deutsche Bank’s corporate venture capital unit who has worked on many M&A deals and brings his extensive experience to bear in his teaching on this module that investigates real M&A case studies.■■ FASHION BRAND MANAGEMENT

On this module students will learn how to devise strategies for branding fashion and for identifying, designing, and managing the most relevant touchpoints of fashion brands. The focus will be particularly on fashion communication and fashion retailing and how brands can design these touchpoints to become leaders in their respective markets.■■ HEDGE FUNDS

This module, taught by Dr Nick Motson who joined Cass after a 13 year career as a proprietary trader of interest rate derivatives in the City of London, includes an exhaustive study of the 10 major hedge fund strategies, paying particular attention to the risks underlying these strategies. Students are introduced to the key issues involved in constructing portfolios of hedge funds as well as incorporating hedge funds into a traditional portfolio. ■■ TECHNICAL ANALYSIS AND

TRADING SYSTEMSThis module gives students a practical understanding of the tools of technical analysis, a critical overview of experience with technical analysis, and the state of academic research in the area.
