For as long as I can remember, May has been considered a ‘family’ month. May birthdays seem more special than most. (Yes I was born in May, thank you!) Weddings, graduations,

proms, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day weekends with loved ones; it’s a wonderful month to celebrate family. Beginning the weekend of April 30-May 1, that’s exactly what we will do; celebrate family with a study series on God’s love and principles for marriage, parenting and relationships. The life story of God’s people provide insight and direction for all of us today.

Wake Up america!“Dear Father, You know that sin, godlessness, atheism and terrorism are on the rise in our nation. Finances, morality, ethics, marriages and righteousness are waning in our homes, in public policies and institutions. Please intervene and Wake Up america! Please send revival to our nation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

How can we make a difference? Let’s follow God’s words to King Solomon: “If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Let’s stand in the gap and bring about change for righteousness.

The 65th National Day of Prayer is May 5, 2016. Our Chapel will be open from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm as a quiet place for people to come and seek God’s mercy and blessing upon our country. Prayer guides and ideas will be available. Please come and humbly, earnestly pray that our sovereign Lord will Wake Up america!

philippines:

international graduate school of leadershipThis graduate-level school is located in the Metro Manila area of the Philippines and is staffed and supported by CRU International. The vision of IGSL is to train future ministry leaders from all over Asia and the former Russian republics. IGSL recently went through a reorganization and restructuring and as a result Huy Merritt from Central Christian was asked to become the Director of Leadership Programs. He will lead a team that will manage all of the academic programs at the school. Huy, who will continue to mentor students, is excited about the new role, but is concerned that these administrative responsibilities will not allow him to teach as much as before. Huy’s wife, Shelley, mentors the wives who accompany

their husbands when they attend IGSL. She also trains many of them in TSOL (English as a Second Language), which may provide income to support their family and ministry when they return to their countries of origin.

Wsu to japan:

navigatorsFor the past three months, Rob and Tara Boyle have been serving in the dual roles of leading the Navigators Ministr y at Wichita State University, while preparing to transition to service in Japan. The highlight of their semester at WSU have been their Student Leader Team (SLT) and their Timothy Team. SLT consists of 21 students who have already caught a vision for living and laboring among the lost. Through them, students have come to Christ and young believers have begun to walk with Jesus daily.

Page 9: May 2016 cc:journal

The Timothy Team consists of six weeks of training for younger students. This semester 18 students joined and learned the basics of and how to apply the Gospel by reading The Gospel for Real Life by Jerry Bridges. It was exciting to see the light turn on for some of the students as they started to develop a Christ-centered vision for their life.

Rob and Tara are going through training and waiting on visas for Japan, plus raising additional support. They will return to a similar role with the Navigators in a coffee shop and evangelism ministry in Japan. They ask for prayer as they hope to make the transition this summer.

revive churchEaster weekend was a joyous and busy occasion for Revive Church. Revive is one of two church plants (with Stadia) supported by Central Christian and is pastored by Alex Gilpin, formerly on staff at Countryside Christian Church in Wichita. The church reports that 220 people came to celebrate Easter with them. Also that weekend, they rejoiced that 11 were baptized, affirming their pledge to invite Jesus to be Lord of their life. Pastor Alex is currently preaching a message series called, “Outrageous Contagious Joy,” a study in the book of Philippians.

choices medical clinic“The stranger who resides with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God.” Leviticus 19:34

Recently, a young couple came to Choices Medical Clinic for a sonogram. They had not considered abotion, but they needed prenatal care, had no money, were from out of town and did not speak English. A few days before, they had been talking with a woman in a parking lot who suggested they visit Choices. The woman said she had been to Choices in the past and, “They were very nice.” When the couple came in, one of our counselors spoke their language! She shared the Gospel, clearly and simply. They listened attentively and both placed their faith in Jesus that day! They were given information about a church near them, contact information for a nearby physician for prenatal care, and she had a sonogram. Both left the clinic feeling relieved and on the road to new life in Jesus.

We LOVE middle school students! If you’ve ever seen them step into a challenging new environment you know you can either expect the outcome to be like dropping a cat in a pool or like watching a colt stand up and walk for the first time. It is always a joyful experience to be a part of their enthusiasm as they step out into the world of possibility. We love giving our students the opportunity to put feet to their faith and challenging them to radically, unashamedly, serve others by being the real life hands and feet of Jesus.

A few weeks ago Caitlin Reed and I had the opportunity to partner with 34 incredible students and leaders in conjunction with our C3 Missions Ministry and a group called the Center for Student Missions. It was an amazing chance to enter into the work Jesus is already doing in the hearts and lives of the people in urban Chicago. As we’ve reflected on all the ministry that happened throughout the week, one story seemed to capture it all. One of our amazing adult leaders shares it in the narrative at right.

Page 11: May 2016 cc:journal

Every morning our group began our day at Carole Robertson Head Start program,

where we spent three hours teaching and loving on kids. The first day we were split into several smaller groups of two to three and assigned a classroom of about 12 kids. My group had the privilege of working with a classroom full of five year old kids. Before we went into the classroom Jay voiced that he had never done anything like this and he was nervous. Without hesitation though, he went right in.

The moment we walked into the classroom we were immediately greeted with smiles and excitement. At the far end of the room was a very quiet little boy who waved us over and asked us to sit next to him. Jay sat right next to him, the little boy introduced himself, and shook Jay’s hand. From then on for the rest of the week the two were inseparable. When it was time to learn the five letters of the day, Jay would go with the boy. When it was time to play “house-keeping” or “building” or “trying the fruit of the day,” Jay went with him. Several times the young boy had Jay dressed up in silly hats or even playing with baby dolls. Throughout the week the

two boys were developing a bond that was very touching to see.

About midway through the week Jay came to me and said he wasn’t sure he could leave the boy. He told me that the two of them had a couple conversations talking about the little boy’a home life. With thoughtful discernment, Jay could tell the boy had been shuffled around and put through so much more than any five-year-old should. Jay recognized something very familiar in the boy; he could tell the boy had been left and had many people walk in and out of his life.

When our last day came around the boy was much more quiet and reserved, as was Jay. During the day the boy gave Jay countless hugs and begged him not to leave. Jay tried his best to cheer him up, but didn’t

have much luck. At the end of the three hours, the kids were asked to recite either a word or letter that was taught during that day in class, and once they had they were allowed to line up at the door for recess. As with any kid this was usually their favorite part of the day. But for the boy that formed the attachment to Jay, it meant it was time to say goodbye. He was the last one to recite the letter of the day and once he finished he broke down into silent tears. Without hesitation, Jay reached down, picked him up, and gave him a massive bear hug. We watched this scene play out and as I looked around the room I noticed the bond of these two boys had captured us all. Unrelenting compassion swelled up inside of me and I, like the other adults in the room, had tears in my eyes.

The two stayed like that for a minute or two and shared an exchange of words that none of us could hear. Eventually Jay walked the boy over to the sink and grabbed a tissue and wiped tears from the boy’s cheek. He told him that he was a very special boy and that he would miss him. Jay held the boy’s hand the entire way to the gym. After saying our goodbyes, Jay came to me choked up and said that leaving the boy was hard for him to do. He said that he knows how it feels to have people he cares for walk out of his life and leave him, and that it was the last thing he wanted to do to that little boy. One of the teachers overheard our conversation and came over to thank Jay. She told him the boy had a very hard time growing and forming friendships while being at the school, and she had never seen him open up the way he had with Jay during the week we were there. Jay told me as we were walking away that he wanted to do something like this at home because he felt like he made a difference.

It is such a privilege to serve alongside students who see the potential of a better world through Jesus and His kingdom. We saw sixth graders pray with strangers they met on the street, boys covered in dish pit slop at soup kitchens for the homeless, girls bring joy to senior citizens by playing bingo shoulder to shoulder with them, and countless hours of one-on-one discipleship between our adult team and our students. We’d like to offer a special thanks to all of you who supported this mission prayerfully and/or financially. Thanks to the C3 Missions Ministry for partnering with us, thanks to Jenna Roger for sharing her story, and a final thanks to all of the adults who gave up their spring break to make ripples in the lives of our middle schoolers that would echo into eternity. n

When the Sovereign tells His sons to “act like men,” we might assume that He will tell them how to accomplish that charge.

This we seek from Him as we look at His words to us in Ephesians 6:10–17 where He tells us to “...put on the full

armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”

Join Pastor David Mann for the breakfast served, the coffee poured, the testimony given, and the encouragement of the brothers for the sake of the

kingdom of God.

...because there needs to be a place where the church just gets together to talk through bible-based answers to the questions they have.

Questions like: “Why does this happen? What does God mean when the bible says that? Why do some churches teach this and other churches teach that?”

EVERYBODY has questions...but most of the time NOBODY has a place they can go to ask those questions and discuss them.

Theologue will try to be that place.

We meet once a month on Thursdayat 7:00 in the Chapel. Our nextmeeting will be May 26.

We have a great time together! Hope you’ll come!

The ministry of His Helping Hands is very fortunate to receive the services of many community volunteers. Every hour that they invest in the ministry contributes to our mission of presenting the Gospel to our clients, enabling many of them to make a first-time profession of faith in Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.

During 2015, the HHH volunteers worked a total of 59,303 hours which is valued at over 1.3 million dollars! This equates to 28.5 full-time employees. As you can see, this ministry would really struggle without the help of our faithful volunteers.

Volunteers come to HHH with a passion to help others which partially defines our motto, “we help people help other people.” The volunteers also have other specific passions—some like to work in the wood shop, some like to sort clothing, some like to fix cars, some like to work in the Gift Shop or the Thrift Store, some like to counsel with clients and share their faith, some like to mentor single moms, and the list goes on and on. It is truly amazing to see the community of volunteers on the HHH campus work together in the many different areas to achieve a common goal, all in the name of Jesus. The HHH volunteers come in different sizes, shapes, colors and ages. Many volunteers come to us on an individual basis. Others come with various groups from schools, churches, businesses, corporations

A Community of Volunteers

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” I Corinthians 15:58

and agencies. And then we have other volunteers that come to HHH with a specific focus.

Individuals who need to perform community service can work at HHH to achieve their required hours. HHH also performs work assessments for people who are trying to get back into the workforce. Agencies bring their clients to HHH for 80 hour work assessments which translate into volunteer help for HHH. A third specific-focus area for volunteers is a back-to-work program for Temp Agencies. These agencies have employees who have been injured on-the-job. As part of their back-to-work program, they assign the injured workers to HHH for job assignments within their prescribed physical limitations, until they are released to go back to work at their original place of employment.

Some of the volunteers who come to HHH through one of the specific focus groups have not heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This gives us another ministry opportunity to invest in their lives by sharing Jesus with them.

We love our volunteers and could not exist without them. They will be honored at a special dinner on May 13th. Please thank the Lord for providing faithful volunteers for the ministry of His Helping Hands. May God bless them “knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”
