It’s a simple phrase. Short. Takes less than a breath to share; less than a second to speak. Yet parents will spend years reminding their children to repeat it.

Individuals working in the service industry rarely hear it . Just ask them. The public o f te n t re at s t h e s e hard-working people as servants with their demands, curt attitudes and small tips. Perhaps it’s a sign of the times and another unwanted and undesirous change in our culture. But saying, “I thank you”, is more than manners. It should be a way of life.

“Thank you” reflects gratitude. It reminds us that we must rely on others. It galvanizes the truth that everyone is important, regardless of their current role or position. Everyone needs encouragement. Everyone deserves to feel that they matter. Perhaps the simplest way to acknowledge that is to offer them thanks.

Jesus stood before the tomb of Lazarus and ordered the stone moved away from the entrance. His intent was to raise His friend from the dead. But before completing

that remarkable miracle, “Jesus looked up and said, ‘Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I know that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.’”(John 11:41,42 NIV)

“I thank you.” Still a simple statement. Yet our Lord, seconds before a momentous moment in His ministry, takes time to honor God and bless those around Him.

Make November more than a one day celebration

of gratefulness. Give a word of thanks to those who help or serve you in any way. Thank people for the little things that make your daily life that much more enjoyable. Bless them with your words and attitude.

But don’t forget to thank the One who makes life possible in the first place. Every morning, every evening, and many moments in between.

“Thank you.”

“Thank you, God.”

Sponsoring a child from our “Tree of Angels” for the holidays has been a tradition here at Central for over ten years. Again this year we offer this ministry opportunity to you and ask that you prayerfully consider being a part of our team. During the month of November, we will have a table set up in the lobby before and after services with the names of our “angels” available for adoption. You may also get them through the week by contacting Barb Marchand in the church office.

At our tables you will find gift tags for children which will list their first name and age. In turn, you are asked to purchase a gift for this child (no more than $50 please) and WRAP your gift. Place the gift tag you picked up back on the gift to identify which child the gift is for and return to the table in the lobby, or drop it off at the church office no later than December 5th. Simple as that!

Most importantly, we ask that you pray for your child and their family. Many of the children we present to you are from single-parent, low-income homes; some are orphans who live with extended family or other caretakers. There are a variety of needs which we are not aware of, but God is, and while

this gift may bring them that excitement every child anticipates on Christmas morning, even more so, it is our prayer these gifts will help them find the true joy that only comes from knowing our Savior, Jesus Christ. Many of these children come through the mentorship program with Youth Horizons and their gifts are given at a special Christmas party where the Gospel is presented to all in attendance. Others come through our ministry with His Helping Hands.

Thank you in advance for helping make a difference in helping brighten the life of one of these children and for showing them the love of Christ!

The ancient cities defeated by Joshua and the Israelites have been forgotten byhistory. Yet, for those in the midst of the battles, those defeats came with risk, loss, hardship and struggle. God’spromise to Abraham centuries earlierwas coming to pass. A new nation wasbeing formed.

As the Israelites began to assimilate themselves into the culture of the day, even to the point of pagan worship, there were those who remained faithful followers of God. They were people from all walks of life...those gifted with amazing abilities and those unsure of themselves, those who were well respected and those not many knew. But all were used to write the pages of God’s story.

Some of the clients send thank you notes to our office after they have received assistance and encouragement from the ministry of His Helping Hands. The thank you letter below is from a man who came to us some weeks back. He came for some clothes and left with incredible hope for his future through the Lord Jesus Christ. He was so thankful that he sent one thank you letter to the HHH counselor and a separate letter to the HHH Director. Below is the letter sent to the counselor:

“I wish to thank you for opening my eyes and heart to the Lord. It is amazing how one prayer could change me.

I am currently in Hastings, NE where I plan to spend my life now. I have a good job and it is a great town. My job has me working on Sundays, but when I get the chance, I will find me a church and Bible study group to attend.

I look forward to getting off work and reading and doing the Bible studies in the God’s Game Plan Bible you gave me.

When I got here to the half-way house, the locker I was assigned to had a chair with a cross on it. I asked my roommates if it was theirs. They said ‘no’, that it must have been left there for me. I wear it all the time now.

I will keep you informed on my journey and keep you in my prayers. I will never forget you. Thank you again.”

Just as it is refreshing for us to receive thank you notes from others, God is pleased to hear us give thanks to Him for the many blessings He bestows on us. As the scripture states, we should “always give thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

In that same spirit of thankfulness, thanks for giving to the ministry of His Helping Hands. Your gifts make it possible for us to help people receive blessings from the Lord in their lives, just like the man in Hastings, NE.

2015 missions trips In 2014, over 50 individuals and families went on

service and learning trips to Kenya, Mexico City, Guatemala and Haiti. Pastor David’s announced

goal is that we send double that amount next year. Below is the schedule and destinations for our

2015 trips. The costs will be between $1,400–$2,000 (based on actual ticket prices), and the church

provides partial scholarships for members. Please pray and ask our Lord if He is sending you! Visit

ccc.org for inspiring video testimonies of last year’s trips.

ANchoreD off the PhiliPPiNe coASt iN the leyte Gulf, a yard freighter rocked with the incoming tide. On deck, a sailor grasped the

rail, searching the night sky for clues. He had heard the booming, unsure of

where it had come from, or from who. Suddenly a flare soared high overhead

and a roar rose up from the shoreline. At first he couldn’t quite make out

the words, but as the shouts grew louder, the message became shockingly clear: “Japan has surrendered”! The date was August 14th, 1945 and the war in the Pacific Theatre had come to an end.

Just nine months earlier, 25 days before his 18th birthday, Lawrence Ross Sampson, Jr. had enlisted in the Navy. He did so as the war ravaged nearly every continent on the globe, not knowing his wartime service would be so short-lived.

“I don’t feel worthy,” Ross said of both his trip and this article. A sentiment I knew the humble man across the table from me meant, as it has been echoed by countless others in his generation. The real heroes are still there, he told me, lying beneath the earth and sea...the ones who gave their lives. But a person who knows the risks and still says, “Send me,” because it’s the right thing to do is heroic indeed. And so, this October, Ross become one of the privileged few to take what has come to be known as an “Honor Flight”.

The Honor Flight Network program was conceived by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and Retired Air Force Captain. When the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. was dedicated in May of 2004, it became a topic of discussion among his veteran patients. That December, Earl asked one of his patients if it would be all right if Earl personally flew him out to D.C., free of charge, to visit his memorial. When the man broke down and cried, it moved Earl so much that the idea of a program that would take as many vets as possible to their memorials was born. (For information on the Honor Flight program, visit www.honorflight.org.)

On October 1st, Ross, along with nearly 50 veterans and their guardians flew to Baltimore, then boarded a bus for D.C. At 87, Ross was the youngest WWII veteran in the group; the oldest was 97. The flight, lodging and food was given free of charge to all vets. Family and friends who made the journey with them (guardians) were given a significantly reduced rate, all courtesy of Southwest Airlines and donations from grateful citizens.

Page 11: November 2014 cc:journal

TOP: Gripping Ross’ hand, Senator Bob Dole offers his thanks to the Kansas vets who made the October trip to D.C.

MIDDLE: “Team Ross,” four generations of the Sampson clan, gathered at the airport to see the travelers off. (Notice the photo of Ross in his Navy blues on their t-shirts!)

BOTTOM: Ross with his son and grandson who served as his guardians on the trip.

For three days, the veterans were impacted by the solemn changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, visited the memorials to World War II, the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima, the Korean War and the War in Vietnam. Unfortunately, by the time they reached the WWII Memorial, Ross was too weary to find his name etched there. Still, the trip holds countless memories for him, including meeting Senator Bob Dole and sharing the experience with his son, Larry, and his grandson, Josh.

Ross and his wife, Alberta, will celebrate 65 years of marriage this December. They have one son, Larry III, two daughters, Chris and Sarah, three grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. n

A godly priest and prophet of Israel becomes a key player in God’s story. Samuel’s first order of business would be to call the Hebrews back to their first love: Yahweh. As God’s chosen people, one would think their journey would be one of ease and comfort, but nothing could be farther from the truth.

This study uses examples from the Israelites journey out of Egypt to show attitudes can affect whether someone stays in the wilderness, or enjoys the blessings of the Promised Land. There is hope for the attitudinally challenged. In this study, James MacDonald shows how you can lead others, (and even yourself ), out of attitudes God hates and into those He honors, from: complaining to thankfulness; coveting to contentment; critical to love; doubting to full of faith; rebellion to submission.

Tawnya KiTT returns as one of Central’s favorite speakers. Born and raised in Louisville, KY, she attended Eastern Kentucky University and, after

a head-on collision with college algebra, joined the Air Force in 1985. There she met and married Antonio in 1998, who changed everything. They have three beautiful children, Aisha, Tonia, and Antonio II. Tawnya loves serving at Central and has been a part of Women’s ministry since 2005, the choir since 2006, and was a sponsor in the Youth ministry for almost two years. To date, Tawnya is a WSU student in the Counseling Program so all her spare time is devoted to “cracking the books”!

Debra caMpbell, our musical guest, was born in Shreveport, LA. She and her siblings sang

on television and radio, and by the age of ten, she had recorded three records. Music is who Debra is! She and her husband, Phil, an active duty military man, have been married for 17 years and have two beautiful girls, Megan 15, and Morgan 13. They have recently moved to Luther, OK on 40 acres of beautiful land and are trying to decide what to do with all of it! As a past Central member she was actively involved in all aspects of this church; from choir, to Women’s Ministries, Children’s Ministries and Sunday school. Central will always be a part of her life and she loves returning for special events, such as our annual Christmas brunch.

“Many Thanksgivings to God”As I write this article there is a chill in the air and leaves are already falling, indicating the coming winter ahead. In getting ready to receive the annual fall “Mountain of Food” donations, I am encouraged by the special gifts we have had this past summer for the food pantry. Often our yearly food offering in the fall is stretched thin as we go into the summer months. This summer we were running out of some of the essentials…peanut butter, tuna and canned fruit. I put an article in the weekend bulletin and when I came in the next Monday morning, I was greeted by an overflowing donation of these items! Obviously several people had seen the requested need and did not wait until “later” to do a good work! The request ran for two more weeks and again each Monday and during the week, I was able to bring several sacks of food items from the lobby and administrative area to restock the needs in the pantry. I want to thank those who so promptly were moved to supply the needs so that we could continue to provide a good variety of food items from the pantry! As we again seek your provision to fully supply and restock our pantry for another year, I am blessed by the following scripture from 2 Corinthians 9:10-12.

“Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God.”

So I give praise to God for your faithfulness to Him and your provision for the needs of the Body at Central. We look forward to your gifts of non-perishable food items. The items on the list are some of the most common items for donation. We average two to three food requests a week from those coming to Central. The “Mountain of Food” will be up the first weekend in November through Christmas. Food donations will again be accumulated in the south part of the lobby area near the children’s check-in area at the “Mountain of Food” display. Thank you in advance for all of your generous donations and thus the blessing of many in need! Praise the Lord!!

by Jennifer Hernandez LMFT

I’d like to begin this month’s article with a story of three trees that I heard growing up as a young girl. I cannot give credit to the author; however, as I was a small child and after several revisions to the story, I do not know which is the original, nor who began it. Nevertheless, the story is as (roughly) follows. There once were three trees—siblings, if you will—who talked to each other about their aspirations and hopes for their future. All three wanted to bring glory to God with their lives, though their paths were different. The first tree spoke of being turned into a beautiful treasure chest; one that would hold the finest of prizes made up of rubies, pearls and gold—something worthy of pirate loot! The second tree spoke of desiring to grow tall and mighty which would allow for transforming into an admirable and glamorous yacht; one that only the finest of people would step foot on. The third tree looked at the other two and stated that his dreams were simple. He wanted to grow old in that very spot and point the way to Heaven. After many years of growth, all three were chopped down and turned into something slightly different than what they had planned on. Rather than a beautiful treasure chest, the first tree was transformed into a simple trough. The second tree fell short of his large yacht expectation and was shaped instead into a small boat. The third tree was chopped and left as lumber. As you can imagine each one was ready to give God an earful on the variations of “The Plan.” “But Lord,” they each pleaded, “we have been faithful.”

“TRUST ME,” declared the Lord. What they didn’t know was that soon God would surpass their own expectations and bless them in ways they would have never encountered had they gone with the original plan. In time, that trough carried the most precious treasure of all: a baby born of a virgin who would come to save the souls of many. That small boat would carry that same

man and help Him along His travels to spread the Good News. Those pieces of lumber would be formed together and on them, this Man would take His final earthly breaths and point the way to Heaven for centuries. “ TRUST ME,” declared the Lord. As a therapist, much of my work with today’s young adults and teenagers centers on the age-old question: “What am I supposed to do with my life?!” It is during these times that symptoms of anxiety and depression spike for fear that they are not meeting certain expectations society has of them. Often, individuals will have their own plans of what

life should be like and how it is all supposed to turn out. They get cues from the media, their friends and family, and those overly committed Facebook bloggers, (guilty), about where they should be in this race called life. Yet, as the story depicted, most times things don’t go according to plan, at least not our plan. And though God’s plan is infinitely better than yours or mine, we have an excruciatingly hard time of letting that control go. So how do we balance this? How can we let go of our need for control and order and still make wise Spirit-led decisions to live

CCC HOME. IMPROVEMENT.

a holy and abundant life? Unfortunately, I don’t have all of the answers, but I do have a few tips as to what I usually ask in my practice. When helping our youth navigate these very normal growing pains, I often ask them what it is they are passionate about. I ask them if those things are something that work well with their personality. I ask them to help me understand what motivates them, what drives them. And I ask them if they have prayed for The Lord’s guidance and discernment in understanding the road they can journey. Lastly, I ask them what would help them trust God more wholly, even if their lives don’t turn out the way they had hoped. In closing, I don’t believe that this life was meant to be reduced to a “perfect plan.” I believe that God can use whatever we do or have for His glory. And the beautiful part is that He wants to do that. All we have to do is learn to trust and loosen our grip on the reigns by turning it over to Him. n
