Pentecost Sunday is a time when

the church celebrates the

coming of the Holy Spirit to

empower and send forth

disciples in the name of the

Risen Christ. It’s a time of joy

and celebration as we continue

the call of Christ as those who

have received and offer God’s

abundant love, grace and

acceptance through our mission

and ministry.

This Pentecost Sunday, May

20th, will also be a time that

Florence Christian Church will

gather for a special called

congregational meeting

following the 10:30 service to

decide on the direction that

God’s Spirit is taking us into the

future. Ultimately we will be

voting on whether God is calling

us as a community of faith to

continue our ministry in Florence

or leave Florence for different

ministry opportunities in Union.

In 2006, Florence Christian

bought a piece of property in

Union, KY with a vision of

building a second campus as an

expansion of our ministry. Due

to several factors (including the

Great Recession), the one-

church, two-campus project was

put on hold, and those

worshiping at Harmony Place

joined those at the Main Street

community. During the

transition period in 2014, the

church decided that they would

explore the possibility of moving

the worship center to Union

while maintaining a ministry

presence in Florence. An

Exploratory Team began that

process, and determined that at

this point in our ministry, we are

unable to do both. We must

either stay at the Main Street

site, or move to Union.

Therefore, in an effort to gather

the necessary information for

discerning our next steps, in

2017 we contracted with

Hub+Weber Architects for an

Architectural Consultation to

determine what it would cost

should we remain here in

Florence, with the necessary

repairs and updates needed as

we look to ministry, both now

and in the future. We have

received the architectural report

on the Main Street facilities and

hope that all of our ministry

partners and friends will take the

opportunity to participate in one

of the informational meetings to

hear that report and ask any

questions you might have. The

next meeting is Sunday, April

29th following 10:30 AM worship.

If you are unable to attend and

would like more information to

review, contact the church office

at 647-5000, ext 1.

Please mark your calendars for

this important gathering, AND

for the Congregational Meeting

on May 20th. Remember that the

congregational meeting is the

time for making decisions;

therefore, if you have questions,

ideas or concerns, please contact

one of the pastors or Josh

Crabtree, our Board Chairperson,

BEFORE May 20th. Join us in

praying for our church and for

God to send us forth in wisdom

and mission!

PLANTING CHURCHES CAN HELP CHANGE

THE WORLD

“Planting a church can make a huge and lasting impression

in the community it serves,” says Terrell L. McTyer, minister

of New Church Strategies and church planter. “By empower-

ing the oppressed, praying for the disenfranchised, caring for

the poor and promoting hope in a fragmented world, the

church can literally help change the world,” he adds.

Each year, half of the Pentecost Offering is designated to the

local Christian Churches in Kentucky in an effort to start and

sustain new churches. The other half is used by Hope Part-

nership to support the recruitment, assessment, training and

coaching of new church leaders at events like Leadership

Academy.

Disciples are on course to starting 1,000 new churches by

2020. For additional information visit www.hopepmt.org.

It’s spring – get out in nature because walking

in nature could lower your risk of depression. A

study published in Proceedings of the National

Academy of Science, found that people who

walked for 90 minutes in a natural area, as op-

posed to participants who walked in a high-

traffic urban setting, showed decreased activity

in a region of the brain associated with a key

factor in depression.

But more than half of the world’s population

lives in urban settings. As urbanization and dis-

connection from nature have grown dramatical-

ly, so have mental disorders such as depression.

City dwellers have a 20 percent higher risk of

anxiety disorders and a 40 percent higher risk of

mood disorders as compared to people in rural

areas. People born and raised in cities are twice

as likely to develop schizophrenia than country

folks.

It is up to us to educate everyone about the

healing properties of God’s creation. Let’s get

our churches outside!

The end of the School Year is fun and filled with events!

Our Pre-Kindergarten will celebrate with their

“Graduation” on May 11, 2018. A cake and punch

reception will follow in the Well. It is always a joy to see

the children shine for their families; I cannot express how

proud I am of all of them.

Our infants and toddlers are so excited to go outside for

walks in our bye-bye-buggy and play on the playground.

Summertime for them means water table play, ice pops,

balls outdoors and a variety of different early childhood

activities.

We have also been busy planning for our children. They

will enjoy different weekly themes and activities that

reinforce the theme. The children are looking so forward

to the summer fun, picnics, outdoor activities, baseball

games, water days and all of the other fun things!

Adventure Zone has field trips to many adventurous

places planned as well as outreach, multigenerational and

fun activities. Our enrollment is at capacity for the

summer.

Happy Summer, Julie

May is Mental Health Awareness

Month so, in view of our current fo-

cus on Financial Peace and our ser-

mon series, this seems to be a great

time to talk about the stress associ-

ated with financial instability. Did

you know that stress from financial

insecurity (real or perceived) can lead

to lack of concentration, inability to

complete tasks, depressive symp-

toms, irritability, and changes in relationships, not to

mention the physical impact? A 2011 study documented

depressive symptoms and aggression in middle schoolers

with parents displaying signs of financial stress impacting

their parenting skills. As we are learning, financial dis-

tress is complicated and has tremendous impact emo-

tionally, physically and in our relationships. Take ad-

vantage of Maleah’s invitation to visit just one class of

the Financial Peace University. You

may learn just one seemingly small

lesson that could make a differ-

ence. In addition, listen carefully to

this sermon series and use the

Wholeness Journey worksheets. In

addition, eat well, be active, devel-

op a daily spiritual practice, and

take advantage of opportunities

you see in the monthly newsletter

and weekly news for education, enrichment, socializing,

faith formation, and activities! Don’t forget the dedica-

tion of the Florence Walking Trails after the congrega-

tional meeting on May 20 at 2 PM at the Florence Gov-

ernment Center!

FLORENCE CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Board Meeting Minutes

April 16, 2018

A special joint meeting of the Board

and Elders of the Florence Christian

Church (Disciples of Christ) Florence,

Kentucky was called to order by Josh

Crabtree, Chairman, April 16, 2018, at

7:00 P. M.

Discerning our Call as a Community

of Faith:

Chairman Josh reviewed with the

board and the elders the many steps

that were taken over the last 12 years

regarding the ministries of FCC in re-

lation to Main Street and Harmony

campuses. After the recap the Chair-

man explained that in consultation

with the ministers and leadership of

the church, he will be calling a special

congregational meeting on May

20th

for the congregation to make

some decisions about our calling as a

community of faith. It was presented

that FCC needs to make a decision to

invest in the Main Street Campus to

make our facilities fit our ministry

needs for the next generations, or we

should forgo the investment in the

Main Street Campus and focus our

attention on building a new worship

center in Union and focus our minis-

tries there. Church leadership deter-

mined that continuing to have the

tension between the two options was

a hindrance in our living into God’s

call for our faith community.

A part of that calling was determining

what would be needed to upgrade

our current facilities at Main Street to

meet those ministry needs.

Architectural Proposal by

Hub+Weber:

The board approved funds in 2017 to

hire Hub+Weber Architects to evalu-

ate our existing campus to help us

determine if our facility is meeting our

ministry needs. After several months

of inspections, planning meetings,

etc., the architectural and engineering

review process was completed. Dur-

ing the evaluation Hub+Weber sug-

gested that we not limit our analysis

to just the current needs but what

would also be necessary for us to use

this facility over the next 40 years.

Since no additional costs were ac-

crued for the additional analysis, the

evaluation was completed.

Josh then introduced Chris Meyer as

our guest speaker from Hub+Weber,

presenting the architectural proposal

on our church campus using the video

screen and handouts. The detailed

report included proposed remediation

and architectural concept drawings

along with an item-by-item price esti-

mate. It included top 7 priorities as

determined by the Property Commit-

tee. Questions and discussion fol-

lowed.

Key points of the presentation includ-

ed that the top 7 priorities that were

critical for the current structure was

approximately $2.3 million. The addi-

tional features to expand our ministry

opportunities and make the best use

of the facility over the next 40 years

were an additional $1 million for a

total in range of $3.3 million. Thanks

to Chris Meyer and the firm as well as

Ken Mead, FCC Property Chair, as they

have spent many hours working to

consider our needs, our history and to

keep the building in service for anoth-

er 40 years.

A comparison document was request-

ed to compare the different options

(i.e. Main Street upgrades, new con-

struction, etc.) Chairman Josh will

take the lead in having the document

prepared and sent to the board as

provided at the informational ses-

sions.

Chairman Josh reminded everyone

there would also be the same type

informational meeting on Saturday,

April 21 at 5:30 and again on Sunday,

April 29, 12:00. Then on May 20 at

noon we will hold a special congre-

gational meeting and vote. Our

challenge as members is to attend the

informational meetings, pick up a

copy of the proposal, and pray for

guidance for a decision.

Thanks also to Matthew Murphy for

helping with slides as David

Markesbery was unavailable.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:03 P. M.

with Mike Voskuhl and Dan Kent mak-

ing motions to adjourn. Pastor Susan

then closed with reading from Luke 14

followed by prayer.

Board Secretary, Ginny Yahl

Children Worship & Wonder Sundays, 9 AM & 10:30 AM – Ages 4-7

Children Worship & Wonder is a very special worship experience designed for younger chil-

dren. It is influenced by Montessori ideas and creates a welcoming environment to grow in re-

lationship with God through ritual, telling our sacred stories, and providing ways for

the children to develop their theological imagination. Children are invited to leave the sanctuary

after the children’s blessing and are escorted to the Children’s Worship Center in the atrium.

Parents are invited to reunite with their children after the close of worship outside the Children’s

Worship Center in the atrium.
