I will be exploring the opening scenes of British Realism Films. British realism films are films which are made by low budget companies but explores and relates to real struggle with usually the youngsters in Britain .

How are the combined techniques used to set the mood of the opening scene?

EDITING - The sound does not start till at least 20 seconds in to the film. This is because when they are showing the flash backs with out the sound it will more likely to attract the viewer . Also the silence in the opening scene cause anticipation. The fact that the sound comes on and off shows that when the sounds off that the important part the viewer should pay more attention toMISE EN SCENE – The scene the props used are baseball bats. The clothes are jeans, dresses etc. Things that you would see in everyday life.SETTING – The setting at the beginning, the scene is the club which looks like a run down hall which you would expect to see in these types of films.

In adulthood there are only 3 clips with writing on them this is good as it doesn’t fi l l the whole of the opening scene with titles. So its more likely for the viewer to concentrate. However, the title and the production name is just on a black background this is effective because there is not to much going on so it doesn’t really confuse the read. The ‘six years ‘ clip then dissolves into car head lights. Which is also effect as it doesn’t jump to another scene it just dissolves.

From the first 2 minutes you can really get a sense of what the fi lm is going to be about . From the top picture this is important to have on the opening scene as that event happened in the first movie this gives you a sense of what is going to occur in the rest of the movie. Where as the second picture happens, from this you can’ t really get any information on what is going to happen next as it is left on a cliff hanger which leaves you in suspense in what will happen next. Also the first 2 minutes doesn’t go off topic so the viewer will not get confused.

How much of the storyline does the viewer get in the 2 minutes? The opening scene for bullet boy , doesn’t give away anything, but going back to the codes and conventions it tells the viewer that the boy has faced a real life struggle which happens to be that the boy is in prison. However the opening scene is simple and attracts you as you want to find out if the boy does bad again once he comes out or if he becomes good as he has learnt his lesson. Also the opening scene gets straight to the point they do not prolong anything. The good thing about start it off in prison makes the viewer realise its not no fake thing its real as people go into prison etc. Also we are not given to much about how the actor l ife is l ived and considering he is non professional it makes it more affective.

MISE EN SCENE - The Mise en scene in bullet boy , the props they use are real, the ef fect this causes on the opening makes you believe it more as it completes the opening.SOUND - Most of the sound used in the opening was diegetic which give you a feeling like your there as they used all natural sounds except a couple like the banging of the boy in the boot that was non-diegetic as the banging was loud.SETTING - The setting of it being in a prison relates the codes and conventions where they f ilm British social realism films in locational setting which is parks, prisons, estates etc..LIGHTING - The lighting in the opening is quite dark which gives you the feel of what it really is like where as if it was bright it would not suit the mood of the f ilm or the mood that was trying to be represented at that time.

How does the Opening title appeal to the audience?

The opening titles in Bullet boy are simple as in adulthood , you just get your production company, actors names then the actual film title. Doing the titles appeal to the audience more as because they are so simple they do not distract the viewer from what they are watching . Also the simple titles also create the sense on when the fi lm is going to start which is like a cliff hanger and where they build It up to start it makes the viewer hope the film would be as good. Also the fact that it is British realism it doesn’t surprise you that the titles are simple.

How does the Opening title appeal to the audience? The titles in Offenders compared

to Bullet boy and adulthood are completely different. Where as adulthood and bullet boys titles were simple and just appeared in normal writing on a black or white screenOffenders titles are very different the titles in offenders are shown on a picture, also the type of writing they use is appealing because its quite different and suits the opening

How are the combined techniques used to set the mood of the opening scene?

MISE EN SCENE – The props used in offenders have a good affect on the opening scene like the police cars at the start sum up what the film will be about.SETTING – The fact that the man is just walking down a normal road bring the realism into the film and set the mood of its just a normal night.SOUND –The use of non diegetic sound and diegetic sound in the film is used quite well, as when the police men are shouting but the sound is loud its shows the mood of something tense/bad is about to occur.Camera – When the man raises his arm and the camera is down low its shows the power he thought he had and makes the film more appealing as you think that will be his persona all the way through.

How much of the storyline does the viewer get in the 2 minutes?

The first 2 minutes in this film doesn’t really tell the viewer anything all you can tell from this is that there is typical codes and conventions like the scene and the issues with the police. However from the beginning you can’t tell what the rest of the fi lms going to be about which is good because it leaves the viewer in suspense and you want to find out what happens next also the fact that they didn’t use well know actors makes it a lot better as it keeps you guessing on that actors personality.
