six-time olympian Clara Hughes lefttoronto March 14 to ride her bike12,000km around Canada, bringing themental health conversation to communi-ties in every province & territory. theevent will conclude July 1 as part ofCanada Day celebrations on ParliamentHill in ottawa. By the end of her trip, over110 days, Clara will have visited 95 com-munities, and taken part in more than 200events in support of mental health.
Clara is hoping that we can achieve astigma-free Canada. she says: “Mentalillness is part of everyone’s life in someway, and talking openly about it tellsthose who struggle that they shouldn’tfear seeking help. Beating the stigma isthe biggest step we can take in movingCanada’s mental health forward. so i’meager to share my mental health storywith you, and hope to hear yours.”
FRPA’s 10-year report card
according to the Forest Practices Board,BC's independent watchdog that reportsdirectly to the public & govt, the 10-yearold Forest and range Practices act, aimedat reducing cost and complexity for indus-try while maintaining high environmentalstandards, has been partly implementedand is working in most situations. How-ever, some aspects of implementation arenot complete or are not working as well asexpected, and improvement is needed.
the Forest Practices Board has pub-lished over 250 reports over the years,which has shown that forest practices gen-erally comply with the legislation, subjectto the recent increase in non-compliances they’ve been finding in audits & investigations.
But this anniversary report, among other issues, has found that: a) govt objectives forforest & range values have not been fully established, and some are unclear. b) Forest stew-ardship plans have limited usefulness for either planning or the public engagement they aresupposed to encourage. c) govt compliance & enforcement is not as thorough as it once was.
