Clara’s Big Ride a community celebration and fundraiser for nicola Family therapy, fea- turing Clara hughes, local entertain- ment/speakers, hot dog dinner ($5.00), arts/crafts silent auction, 50/50 draw and prize raffle will take place at the Civic Cen- tre on tuesday, May 20, 5-9pm. tickets are $ 10/person or $ 25/family (up to 4), $5 each additional member, available at nicola Family therapy (378-9222), Country Bug Books, Black’s Pharmacy & Brambles. six-time olympian Clara Hughes left toronto March 14 to ride her bike 12,000km around Canada, bringing the mental health conversation to communi- ties in every province & territory. the event will conclude July 1 as part of Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill in ottawa. By the end of her trip, over 110 days, Clara will have visited 95 com- munities, and taken part in more than 200 events in support of mental health. Clara is hoping that we can achieve a stigma-free Canada. she says: “Mental illness is part of everyone’s life in some way, and talking openly about it tells those who struggle that they shouldn’t fear seeking help. Beating the stigma is the biggest step we can take in moving Canada’s mental health forward. so i’m eager to share my mental health story with you, and hope to hear yours.” FRPA’s 10-year report card according to the Forest Practices Board, BC's independent watchdog that reports directly to the public & govt, the 10-year old Forest and range Practices act, aimed at reducing cost and complexity for indus- try while maintaining high environmental standards, has been partly implemented and is working in most situations. How- ever, some aspects of implementation are not complete or are not working as well as expected, and improvement is needed. the Forest Practices Board has pub- lished over 250 reports over the years, which has shown that forest practices gen- erally comply with the legislation, subject to the recent increase in non-compliances they’ve been finding in audits & investigations. But this anniversary report, among other issues, has found that: a) govt objectives for forest & range values have not been fully established, and some are unclear. b) Forest stew- ardship plans have limited usefulness for either planning or the public engagement they are supposed to encourage. c) govt compliance & enforcement is not as thorough as it once was. the report also includes advice on what needs to be done to achieve the intent of the legislation and ensure BC has sound forest and range practices that warrant public con- fidence. the full report is available at: www.fpb.gov.bc.ca Community Branding open houses the City will hold open houses for public input on Merritt's Destination Branding Project on Monday May 12 @ 7pm, and tuesday May 13 @1pm at the Civic Centre, choose one to attend.
