Message from the Principal

Dear Parents, Thank you for reading this Newsletter.

2016 Charity Masked Ball : Saturday 19th March : Can you help ? Thank you Julie Thomas, and members of the PA from both TIS and SST for preparing publicity, ticket sales, and indeed meticulously planning the Event itself. The 2015 OO7 Ball brought the School com-munity together in a very special way; it is hoped the 2016 Ball will have a similar, ‘magical’ effect. Please note that excess funds will go to the Penan Project. The Penans are one of the oldest indige-nous tribes still living in Borneo. Penans rely heavily on Mother Nature for sustenance, both spiritually and physically. The Penans are still learning to adapt to modern ways of life and need our help. If any parent is able to help sponsor the Masked Ball, in any way, every extra ringgit raised above Ball costs, will go to the Penan project. If anyone can help please contact Julie Thomas, Mandy Cheong or Andrew Auster directly. https://youtu.be/aC0MqHA-PKI

All new and existing parents are urgently invited to be present for this AGM. Details are provided below:-

Date: Thursday 3rd March 2016

Time: 08:00-10:00hrs

Our meetings are about three to four times a year and we really need committed elected members to attend these meetings.

To facilitate our planning, the school will be sending out a letter soon to invite parents to send in nomina-tions to be members of this committee and to indicate their presence for this meeting. If you are interested to serve in this committee, you can also inform us through an email to [email protected] latest by

Year 4 IPC Field Trip - Petrosains KLCC

On Monday 30th December 2015, Year 4 children went on a field trip to Petrosains KLCC. The children had the amazing opportunity to attend an electrical workshop. During this workshop children were led step by step to create their own DIY camp lamp. As part of the trip, the children also had the opportunity to visit Petrosains Discovery Centre. Generally the children had so much fun and were very happy. At the end of the day, the children were proud to go back home and show parents their night camp lamps. What a lovely day we had!

Year 5 IPC Field Trip - Sktrex Shah Alam

Skytrex certainly challenged the nerves of Year 5 (children and teachers alike) but everyone gritted their

teeth and were soon amazed by how confident they felt, dangling 30 feet above the ground and careering

through the forest canopy on zip lines. There were smiles all around with one boy repeatedly shouting

“This has been the best trip ever!”. With this being a well-organised and very safe venue, Skytrex is sure to

be a fixture in the Year 5 curriculum at the end of 2016.

A-levels Biology Workshop

On the 26th November 2015, Year 12 and Year 13 biology students participated in the “Crime Scene DNA Fingerprinting: Bringing out the CSI in You” workshop. The workshop is led by the honoura-ble Associate Professor Dr. Lau Yee Ling, Lecturer at the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medi-cine, University of Malaya, and Dr. Hoe Li Nah from Canvio Sdn. Bhd. Dr. Lau taught us the science be-hind DNA fingerprinting. Dr. Hoe guided us on how to use micropipette accurately, which is the most chal-lenging step that requires the utmost concentration and precision. Needless to say, many of us felt the need to redeem ourselves and tried it one more time. At the end of the day, our new found sense of pride and accomplishment left us curious and earned for more. Hopefully, this amazing experience has trig-gered a new passion and interest for gene technolo-gy as a potential career path. A huge gratitude to the doctors who took the time to teach us, and to Ms. Sherry for organising the successful workshop. By: Wan Ting, Y12

STEP AND SMILE by Rachel Ng It was during the December holidays that I took the liberty of paying a visit to Step and Smile, an edu-cation center for children with cerebral palsy, which is a brain disorder that affects muscle coordination and causes speech impairment.

Uneasiness and apprehension perhaps best sums up my state of mind on the day of my first visit. I simply did not know what to anticipate. Though I am no stranger to handling little children, dealing with ones who have special needs seemed to me a foreign notion that I just could not fathom, and I distinct-ly remember the unsettling questions that plagued my mind: What if they don’t like me? Do they think and feel as I do? What if I hurt them?

However, my anxiety proved to be in vain, as upon my arrival I was greeted most warmly by Mr Alan Roberts and his wife Mrs Kiyoka Roberts, and introduced heartily to the children: Ryan, Marc, Seba and Deebak, all of whom were no younger than seven years and no old-er than twelve years. Most of them could not speak nor move with the dexterity that so many of us take for granted today.

Initially, I was uncertain how to handle them, but with the cheeriness and patient guidance of their teacher, Ms Szandra, I too was soon at ease and on the floor assisting them in their vari-ous exercises that are designed to train their mus-cle coordination and motor skills, such as having them clench bean bags or similar objects and toss them into a basket, or encouraging them to crawl from one end to another to hone their body movements.

What I found particularly striking, though, was not the disorder that these children suffer from, but rather that they did not appear to be suffering at all. Though their movements and speech are limited and restricted, their laughter and joy are most definitely not. It seemed to me that they laughed louder and harder than most, and that though they may never learn as we do, they know the value of things far more important.

The experience was invaluable; contrary to my expectations, I enjoyed the innocuous company of the

children very much and I had such fun playing games with them, so much that I simply cannot wait for

my next visit. Indeed, it was so heartwarming to see someone smile so sincerely despite their disability,

and it made me realize that although these children may be flawed in their brain development, in mind

and soul they are perfect. And I think that’s more than enough.

FROM THE PA:

That special time of year is upon us again…!

Yes, it is almost time for the Tenby Ball. Only two months away, it is just around the corner. There has been a flurry of activity and excitement behind the scenes since September 2015 with the PA busy putting together something really very different for this year’s Ball. Time has flown.

We took on board all your feedback from the last Ball, chewed on it, thought it through, put on our serious and not-so-serious thinking caps and we believe we have upped the ante for this upcoming Ball.

This year we are having a Masquerade Ball and we guarantee it will be a different experience, more chic and more glamorous. Much merriment and enjoyment will be had by all...The venue is exciting, the entertainment will be a sensation and the food will be delicious.

Most importantly the crowd – you – will make this the most enjoyable social event in celebration of the Tenby family in which parents, friends of the School and staff come together in the best positive manner, building ever stronger bonds and a thriving, buoyant community.

As we look internally at our community, we also look externally. This year we are supporting the Penan Women Foundation, the Penan being one of the oldest and last remaining indigenous people in Malaysia. Any excess funds raised for, and at, the Masquerade Ball will go towards very basic, essential things like medicine, soap/toothpaste, solar lights, boats to help get them to hospital when necessary. Let us work together to lend them our support.

One thing we promise for this event: It will be an evening of surprises…Get ready for a great and rewarding night out!
