    Starburst Wrapper Bracelet Tutorial

    http://fluffyland.com/blog/?page_id=50

So, have you been wondering how to make the amazing bracelets fromStarburst wrappers? A simple folding method, plus some finishing tips,

will help you make your very own Starburst bracelet. Using these

simple instructions, youll soon memorize the folding pattern, and itllbe a piece of cake! (or candy..) The average bracelet takes 30-35

Starburst wrappers, so save up! Asking friends to unwrap carefully and

donate helps quite a bit. Also, to avoid candy binges and sugar highs, unwrapping all your Starbursts and saving them in a ziploc bag for later

    munching is helpful.

Keep in mind that when you have finished, you need the bracelet big enough to slide on and off your wrist

without too much trouble. Because of the folding method, the bracelet will stretch slightly, so this shouldnt be

much of a problem.. but be careful.

Click on any of the photos for a larger view.

Step 1Take your first wrapper and flip it over.

    I know, its tricky.

Step 2Fold (hot dog) one side in to the halfway point.

    Step 3

Fold (hot dog) the other side to the halfway point.

Step 4Next, fold (hot dog) the whole thing in half so the raw edgesyou just folded are on the inside crease.

Step 5Fold (hot dog) in half again.

Step 6 Fold (hamburger) in half.

Step 7Fold (hamburger) one side to the halfway point.

Step 8Fold (hamburger) the other side to the halfway point.

Repeat steps 1-8 with the next wrapper.

Step 9Insert points 1 and 2 into slots A and B, so it looks like

    this:

    Step 10And pull it through.

    Step 11Continue steps 1-10

Step 12 until you begin to build up a chain.

Step 13Once you have reached the desired length this iswhere it gets tricky.

Step 14.. fold one more wrapper the same way as the

others, but then unfold the last two folds. Insert these raw edges into the same spots in the V.

    4/13

Step 15Pull the two ends of the bracelet close together, and hold theedges of your long V over both edges of the end of the other side.

Step 16Insert the raw edges into the first wrapper. Youre doing

the same thing weve been doing, but backwards.

Step 17Pull ends through until you reach the original folded point.

Step 18Tuck the raw edges into the previous wrapper, so it looks just

like the other wrappers in the chain.

tip! at this point, i find it helpful to use a paperclip or similar

item to push the wrappers through.

    And youre done! Congratulations!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN GUM WRAPPER CHAIN

    1. OPEN wrapper. 2. RIP in HALF along length.

    3. FOLD in HALF along length. 4. OPEN and FOLD lowerHALF into middle.

    5. FOLD upperHALF in towards middle. 6. FOLD in HALF along length again.

    7. FOLD in HALF 8. FOLD ends in HALF towards middle.

    9. Now with two links, fit the 2 PRONGS into

    the SLOTS of the other.

    10. Add additional links to construct your own

    WORLDRECORD gum wrapper chain. HAVE

    FUN!

    NOTE:

    1. If you have any problems with the instructions, just email me and I'll help you out.2. You can use STARBURST wrappers too if you can't find gum wrappers. Don't rip them in

half. Simply fold them six times at Steps #3 to #5 so that you end up with the same

dimensions (1/4 inch by 2 and 1/2 inches) for your link at Step #6. Then follow the rest of the

Steps from there.3. TO MAKE A GREAT BRACELET use the outer pack. Just cut them to the size of the inside

    wrapper.

Cut each potato chip bag into 2 X 4 1/2 pieces. Using a

rotary cutter makes it fast. I use potato chip bags, cookie

packages, ramen noodle packages, anything really. I've

tried some heavy plastics but they are hard to slide into

each other, they want to stick. With the large potatoe chip

bags it only takes about 20 bags to make a whole purse. (I

think, don't quote me on that, that's what i tried to figure out

    one time.

Cut magazine pages the same size as each chip bag piece.

Each piece you fold will have a piece of magazine paper in

it to make it very sturdy. Folding instructions for each piececan be found at www.gumwrapper.com/build.htm ..

start with #3 on the instruction sheet because your pieces

    are already cut to size.

Once you have 60 wrapper pieces together you need to join

    them into a circle.

Take the first wrapper piece off and put into the other sideby unfolding and putting the raw edges into the last chain

    (green piece in photo)

Follow the pictures........it's like your making the chain backwards.

I have to use a screw driver or something flat to push the piece down into the

chain. Tuck the raw edges into the previous wrapper so it looks like the other

    wrappers in the chain.

    SEWING ROWS TOGETHER

Each row has like a positive and negative. You will be fitting the positive into the negative so that rows fit

    together (see photos)

You can use a large eyes needle with a blunt tip, if you usethe ones like I first tried in the picture, you poke thru the

wrappers instead of going thru them. I made myself a

needle out of a credit card and melted a hole in one end forthe thread. The size of the piece of credit card was cut 2 3/8

X 1/2. That seemed to work the best but you will need a

needle to attach the zipper. Ive tried several different kindof thread..I dont know that there is a wrong or right

thread..as long as it is very strong. The thread that I

was using in the photos was a denim jean thread. Its verystrong and wont break but it was so thin that it actually

was like a knife and cut my wrapper. DMC floss worked

fine, I found a doily crochet thread that worked. I checked

into the fishing line that everyone talks about, it was catfishnylon and would not break but I cant find any thin enough. Its all just to thick. Ive read lots of info of

speculation on how these purses are put together..they are all sewn and NOT woven or folded

    together.

To begin sewing rows together.bring needle up thru any chain and back down the other side and tie a strong

knot. (next 3 photos) You will weave your loose thread ends into the purse later. The beginning is the only time

that you will tie your thread onto the purse. As you run out of thread, tie on with a square knot and continuesewing

Put two chains together as I described with the positive and negative. You will be sewing down thru a chain,

over slightly to the right and down thru the next chain, up thru the next chain and down thru the next one.Follow the picturesYou will continue to do this until you get all the way around. You will then take your

thread over a V and do the inside or other side. You will be sewing both sides of the purse. It will get very

stiff as you will be pulling the thread tight to pull all the chains together.

Continue sewing up and down chains until you go all the way around. Make sure you pull the thread tight so

you do not have any gaps or see the thread.

Once you go all the way around, you need to run your thread over the "V" to sew the other side of the purse. You will be sewing both sides.

add the next row.......positive to negative

    SEWING THE BOTTOM

Squeeze the bottom together and start sewing. You will only be able to sew the outside of this row. There is not

enough room on the inside to sew like you did on the other rows.

I can't really explain how to sew the bottom, but once you squeeze it together just start running your needle thru

the rows to hold them together. It doesn't matter how many times you go around a square because you will

never see the thread. The only place that you can see my thread is in the very corners. You will have to sewaround the corners a couple of times to pull them tight. The bottom is harder to have a consistant sewing pattern

because your sewing the positive to positive. You'll totally understand what I'm talking about once you begin

    sewing. :-)

Continue sewing along the bottom. Tuck in each corner with a screwdriver when you have the

bottom sewn. Once you get it tucked in there it's not going anywhere because it's so tightly

    wedged in there.

    ADDING THE ZIPPER

Doesn't matter what type of zipper you buy just so it is long enough to go across the purse. You will cut theexcess off that is inside the purse.

Catch the very edge of the zipper and then run your needle down thru a chainand up the next one.

If you look really close at this picture, the needle is running down thru thechain of red wrapper with the yellow strip through it. The needle will come

back up through the white chain.

This picture is a little blurry but what I'm trying to show is the needle coming

back up the white chain. You will catch the edge of the zipper at every "v"

    around the chain.

Do both ends of the zipper like the picture. It doesn't really matter how long

the zipper is because once you tuck the ends inside the purse you can cut thezipper off.
