The area that we need the most

    improvement in is "Involvement and

    Commitment".

The second area we need to improve in

    is "Recognizing and Rewarding High

    Performance".

    Service to a Community Partner

Our Community partner was the Demello ElementarySchool in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts.

We worked in a fourth grade classroom with 25students and their teacher, Helen Mello.

As a team, we communicated with the teacher quitefrequently, and met with the children on four separateoccasions.

We educated the children about recycling and gavethem valuable knowledge that they will have withthem for the rest of their lives and can pass on toothers (friends, parents, siblings, etc).

Our community involvement consisted ofworking with 25 children over the courseof the semester.

Not only are we just educating thechildren in recycling, but we areeducating them in hopes of theirknowledge spreading across thecommunity.

We spent all four teaching sessions educating thechildren on recycling.

    Interesting facts about recycling

    Reading activity Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The carbon footprint activity- designed for eachstudent to recycle 15-20 items outside of theclassroom

Since each student recycled at least 15 items, 25students x15 items= 375 recycled items

The worm bin is to teach the children about theimportance of composting and reducing theirgarbage

Lesson with little buddies next semester

By the final lesson, we could see a complete

change in their knowledge on recycling.

By teaching them at such a young age, we hope

that the future generation will get a better grasp

    on recycling and its importance.

They will share their knowledge with their little

    buddies next semester.

Many children were eager to tell us about how

they got their younger sibling to recycle, or theirmother, father, or friend.

We left a packet from The Green Team where

Mrs. Mello can continue to teach similar recycling

lessons. (posters, fun activities, lesson plans)

Mrs. Mello told us that she has never seen the

    children so excited about learning.

Her comment made us pleased to know we

made an impact by providing the children with

knowledge that will stay with them forever.

The worm bin is a continuous recycling activity

that they can share with others.

We chose different creative activities to do withthe children that no one has ever done in thepast.

We created a carbon footprint activity, relating

recycling to creativity in a hands on (feet on!)activity.

Another creative idea we had was to have thechildren make their own worm bin that they willhave in the classroom even after we are done

teaching them. When Marissa didn't show upfor one of our planned activities, we werecreative and managed to work out an activityfor the children that day.

Working with Children- When we realized we were workingwith children we were immediately excited and started thinkingof lessons that they would enjoy. We were hesitant aboutmaking comprehensive material for fourth graders, but theyactually knew and retained more information than we hadexpected, which was great!

Dividing up Tasks-At our first meeting we wrote down ourattributes that could benefit the team. Lauren and Daphne weregood at creativity aspects such as updating the Wiki andmaking sure it is presentable. Anna and Rebecca liked to takenotes and write so they were in charge of making meetingminutes/agendas. Nicole was good at contacting/scheduling so

she called the stakeholders and made meetings. So far wehave been able to keep up with our roles and do the assignedwork.

The Timing- Our schedules were somewhatconflicting between Mission Green, Mrs.Mello, andMarissa. We wish that the lessons had started earlierand closer together in the week so we could have

had more time to work on the project later.

The Individual Workload/Effort- Even though eachmember had their assigned tasks some were late topost them or to even do them. At meetings after along day of work/school we would often be tired and

not put 100% effort into the Wiki, leaving others to doit at another time.
