Welcome to Mobile Event Guide’s 2011 Eco Report. When we founded this company only two years ago, we made a commitment to continually evaluate our progress towards reaching our goal to eliminate paper waste in the event industry. It’s a lofty goal and we decided early on it was important to keep track of our goals — and mistakes — to continually improve. In here you will find the milestones in our progress, as well as some additional steps and challenges we face in the road ahead.

One of the most significant achievements since the last year is our rapid growth. This year we have developed more than eighty original applications. Naturally, this rapid expansion creates additional challenges, which we also address in this report.

Most importantly our mission to reduce the carbon footprint in the event industry is being taken to scale. Our reach has extended to developing mobile solutions not only for conferences, but also for trade shows, festivals and expos in Germany, United Kingdom, United States and Switzerland.

Evaluating our environmental impact has energized us to continue towards our mission and clarify our role as the environmentally-conscious mobile software providers. This year we were fortunate to be joined by exceptional designers—Dennis Haupt and Alexander Blödorn — who, together with our Lead Designer Bastian Stein, re-designed our website in time for the end of the year.

We welcome you to visit our new website, www.mobile-event-guide.com and send us your feedback. To all of our partners, thank you for your support. The achievements highlighted in this report would not have been possible without your support and thus are not only our victories — but also yours.

Greetings from Berlin,

Felix Swoboda

Think Green, Go Mobile

In 2004, the Convention Industry Council’s  Green Meetings Report hosted the first Green Meetings Initiative, a gathering of event industry leaders and environmental activists that resulted in a practical solutions to reduce the environmental impact of conferences, events and tradeshows.

The conference called for further investigation into digital solutions. The founding team at Mobile Event Guide sought to develop a practical & environmentally-friendly alternative to paper prints and subsequently developed the Mobile Event Guide.

Recycling & Energy Savings

Thanks to the Glass Packaging Institute, we were able to track the environmental impact in energy savings that results from our bottle-to-bottle recyling, the best use of recycled glass. We partnered with a drink provider, Mac-Apfel Co., to recycle all of our glass bottles used in our offices.

We recycle 720 glass water bottles a week!

The Glass Packaging Institue estimates that in the past year we saved 7,489,407 watts of energy!

Making Events Go Greener

Our calculation uses methodology from Conservatree, a member of the environmental paper network.

For detailed information on Conservatree’s methodology, please see www.conservatree.com.

our Green headquartersAfter our first business year, we had outgrown our available office space. We decided that our new office space had to promote green design and construction principles. Our new office space in Berlin makes extensive use of glass and aluminum. Exterior sunshades are constructed in a way to bounce indirect natural light deeply and evenly into the building’s interior. Our office also includes filters that improve indoor air quality and feature a low-pressure drop that translates into more efficient energy use.

Note about Methodology

Our resource calculations were performed using calculations based upon InHouse Communication Agency’s “Tree Usage Calculator” using methodology from Conservatree. The calculator is meant to be an educational tool that gives users a rough estimate of how much water it takes to produce a sheet of paper. It is not meant to be a definitive and granular analysis.

In addition, the report assumes that each user attributed with more than 50 sessions to the application chose to use the mobile application as his or her primary event guide.

The tree and energy calculator estimates that 24 trees are required to make one US ton (2,000 pounds) of uncoated / office type paper. A single tree translates to 8,333 sheets of US letter ‘copier’ paper, where the US letter is 4% smaller than the A4 paper typically used for conference brochures. Using this calculation, 1 softwood tree makes 8,000 sheets of A4 paper.

The calculation depends on the assumption that each page is printed both sides. More information about assumptions made in the usage calculations can be accessed at http://conservatree.org/learn/EnviroIssues/TreeStats.shtml.
