work is aimed to denounce the precarious reality of life in the slums and involve

the general public in building a more united, just and inclusive country.

Visit one of the communities in which Un Techo Por Mi Pais works and learn from the community development workers about

the programs they have to strengthen their community. Programs include educational and recreational sites development,

programming activities for children and teenagers, maintaining community orchards and gardens, technical training in

different trades, and adult literacy programs. Lend a hand as you meet with community members while better understanding

streets of the Old City, Constitution

of Uruguay. This immense building was constructed between 1908 and 1925 with local marble of 52 kinds and 12 types of

We will drive down 18 de Julio, the main commercial avenue, a bustling street lined with shops, cafés and office buildings.

Drive through the Prado neighborhood and enjoy one of the oldest parks in the city hosting the famous sculpture, La

Diligencia, and a monument to the last of the indigenous Charruas people. The Rose Garden offers you the chance of spending

some time meandering around the Prado Hotel. At the Plaza Virgilio we will take in the monument dedicated to the Fallen

Soldiers of the Navy and an excellent view of the city which offers are great spot for photographs. Return along the coast and

MON29 THE OLD TOWN WALKING TOUR

Enjoy the quaint charms of the Old Town,

walking along its narrow streets and

admiring the architecture and arts from the

19th and 20th centuries. Montevideo has an

eclectic mix of influences of architecture,

some amazing buildings dating back to very

prosperous times.

Visit the Taranco Palace which was the home of wealthy Taranco family and

designed by prestigious French architects Charles Louis Girault and Jules Chifflot.

Delight in the charming collections of paintings, sculptures, Louis XV and Louis

XVI furniture, Baccarat crystal and Severs porcelain.

At Plaza Zabala, a fenced in plaza is a late 19th century spot, see the monument to the city’s founder, Bruno Mauricio de

Zabala. We will then walk past the well preserved early 19th former home of General Fructuoso Rivera , the first President of

Uruguay. Today it houses the Museum of National History. We will make a stop at Constitution Square, to browse through the

stalls of the Flee Market and see the best preserved buildings from the Spanish Colonial period.

We will stop to visit inside the Solis Theatre (1842), which was recently restored to its old glitter. This impressive building is

today the center of Montevideo’s artistic activities. At Independence Square you will see the former Presidential Palace (1874)

and Salvo Palace (1922) which represent the structure of their time. The bus will be waiting to drive you back to the pier.

MON30 WINE TASTING AT JUANICO WINERY

3 ½ hours

Drive north from Montevideo into the heart

of Uruguay’s wine country. The Juanico

Winery is one of the leading wineries, with

700 acres of lands and with a processing

capacity of 1.5 million gallons of wine! The

rich soil and micro-climate of Juanicó

Region has turned this area into a

renowned viticulture site. The first

vineyards in the region were planted in

1835. Today, the best classic varieties are grown using an smart canopy

management system with organic agriculture principles. Presently Uruguayan

winemakers have entered its wines into very competitive markets where they are receiving international recognition and gold

medals at the most prestigious international wine competitions.

Upon arrival a tour of the vineyards and company's facilities equipped with state-of-the-art processing machinery, and the wine

cellar built in 1840. After being comfortably seated, with a plate of cold meats, cheeses and bread, the wine tasting of some of

their top wines is guided by one of the winery’s oenologists. white varieties may include: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc,

Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Gris. Red varieties may include: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Meunier and Pinot. O

MON31 RIVERBOAT & NATURE VIEWING

Discover the Santa Lucia river by

boat! We will visit one of the protected

Uruguayan flora and fauna reserves.

This area is well known because it has

a saline coastal wetland system. As

we cruise the wetlands area, we will

observe the different

native vegetation formations, small

hills, sandy beaches, river islands and

rocky points. This diversity provides a habitat to many different animal species

including migratory birds and also is a unique area for fish reproduction.

MON32 CHEF’S ATELIER

Owner and chef, Olivier Horion, is a French

gourmet who has been living in Uruguay for

the past 24 years. In December 2009 he

opened a new bistro which includes a

cooking workshop called the “chef’s atelier”. Depart from the pier and head to Olivier

Horion’s bistro, located in Pocitos

neighborhood, where the doors will open for

you to experience being a chef in one of Uruguay’s hippest restaurants.

Small groups ensure that lessons are as personal and as comfortable as

possible. Amateurs and experiences guests will be taught on how to make elaborated dishes, from French and Asian

specialties to pastries. At the end of every lesson guests will be able to enjoy the dishes which they prepared, accompanied

with the chef’s selection of wines. After lunch, drive along the beach promenade back to the port.

MON33 URUGUAYAN ART SCENE: MEETING WITH LOCAL ARTIST

Tour dedicated to the art and artists

of Uruguay including the Atchugarry

and the Ralli museum: Learn about

the different styles of Uruguayan art

and explore the world of painters

and artists. The Atchugarry Museum

in La Barra shows the famous

sculpture of the artist and the Ralli

Museum in Punta del Este is a

special place of colors. As a highlight

Casa Pueblo should not be missed. Carlos Paez Vilaro is surely one of the

greatest personalities of Uruguay and with his unique workplace, hotel and museum he created a fascinating peace of art. You

Gardens in Schools” program, is one of a

number of innovative programs being

carried out in Uruguayan schools that are

using gardens as a teaching resource to

promote environmental awareness, sense

program currently involves 400 schools

and 45,000 students.

A visit includes a briefing by the administration officials as to the mission, works

and needs of the specific project, followed by time interacting with the children and also some work of a constructive nature,

such as painting, plantings or light construction. We visit a school and assist in the plantings.

MON36 ART TOUR IN MONTEVIDEO

Visit to the two cultural centers of

Montevideo for a behind the scenes tour of

the arts in Uruguay. First stop is the Teatro

Solis, a miniature Teatro Colon (of Buenos

Aires) and a real gem: a credit to Uruguay,

and a fine example of Uruguayan

history. The official inauguration of the

Teatro Solis was on the 25th of August,

1856, over 150 years ago. Next stop is the

Museo Torres García . Joaquín Torres García was an Uruguayan artist that

revolutionized modern painting; his style, called "constructivismo", was the

beginning of a new era in modern art.
