Principals Report -

Welcome back!

Welcome back to a new school term! I hope you enjoyed the break and that it provided an opportunity for everyone to recuperate after a very busy first term. As I mentioned at our P-12 assembly it is most important that all our students look after themselves during the term as it is an eleven week term, and with the onset of winter, it is easy to become run-down and vulnerable to illness.

Welcome to Jess Duncombe, our new school chaplain

We have been fortunate enough to receive funding from the Commonwealth Government under the National School Chaplaincy Programme and on Wednesday we welcomed our new school chaplain, Jess Duncombe to the school. As a member of the school’s wellbeing team, the chaplain will offer support to the student body, teachers and also to families. Jess will be based in the new ‘Wellbeing Centre’ along with Kerry Boyden, our welfare officer, and Michael Malady, our secondary nurse. The ‘Wellbeing Centre’ is the portable located between the library and ‘The Shed’.

P-4 Class Captains: At Monday’s assembly the P-4 Class Captains for Term 2 were announced and I would like to con-gratulate the following students on being selected for this important role: Year Prep: Megan Wendt and Jobe Baker Year 1/2P: Chloe Goldsworthy and Julian Stewart-Murray Year 1/2C: Sam Hall and Rose Hayden Year Three/Four S: Kaylee Bawden and Dylan McDonald Year Three/Four V: Ruby McDowall and Josh Mahncke Anzac Day march:

As I mentioned in the newsletter at the end of last term Anzac Day will be commemorated on Saturday 25 April and I would encourage all our students to participate in the Mortlake Anzac march as a show of respect for what the day means for the nation as a whole. Of course, being the centenary of the Gallipoli landings makes this year even more significant. Somers Camp On Tuesday eleven students headed off to Somers camp for eight days. This is a great opportunity for the students to mix with 150 other students from a large number of schools in our area and enjoy activities such as boating, archery, Environmental Studies, bushcraft, orienteering, abseiling and lots more. We look forward to hearing about the camp upon their return.

New Procedure for Mortlake College Bus Passes

Mortlake College was required by the Department of Education to complete a review of policy & process regarding bus travel. In or-der to be compliant with Public Transport Victoria’s requirements for school bus travel a number of changes have had to be made.

The most significant change affecting our travellers concerns students wanting to travel on a

bus that they normally don’t travel on.

The new process for students wanting to travel on a bus they normally don’t travel on will commence on 1st May 2015 and is outlined below.

Parents/guardians must contact the school not later than one school day prior to request the travel. If seating is available, a bus pass will be sent home with the child. The bus pass must be signed and dated by a parent/guardian, returned to the school office on the morning of the travel arrangement.

Please note that bus passes may be requested in the week prior to the travel but cannot be ap-proved if made on the day the travel is requested.

It is important to keep in mind that we cannot always guarantee a pass as it is dependent on the seating capacity of each bus.

If you have any concerns at all about this change please contact the school.

Dear Parents and Students.

The response to the ‘LionKing’ trip has been over-

whelming and we now have a full coach going. We have,

however, run into a dificulty. When we went to book

the extra tickets, there were not enough on that day.

The only real option we had was to move the date, and

although it is very close to our own production of ‘Cats’,

we had little choice.

The newdate is now WednesdayJune17th.

All other details will be the same. We’ll send out inal

arrangements and student permission forms before the

excursion to complete the process.

If you have any problems with this date, please let us know as we do have a waiting list for tickets.

Yours Sincerely,

Warrnambool Careers Expo (May 18, 19 & 20 – 2015)

All Warrnambool and District Secondary Colleges in conjunction with the region’s Further Educa-tion providers will be combining to host the Biennial Careers Expo during Careers Week in May 2015. The primary aim of the Expo is to assist students and their parents to research a wide range of careers options in preparation for the important decisions students will make over the next few years.

The Careers Expo is conducted every two years and from past experience and testimonials, is an invaluable experience and extremely useful in assisting students in their career decision making and transition process. Research clearly indicates that families who research career options early have a greater degree of success in navigating through the many career options.

Guest presenters are current practitioners in their chosen vocations and they will outline the day to day tasks involved within their career, the career paths and education and training required to ob-tain employment in their field / industry as well as further career prospects / advancement opportu-nities. Students from Year 8 to Year 12 can attend the Careers Expo.

Expo Dates and Venues:

Each evening will commence at 7:00pm with an array of static displays. Presentations commence at the times listed below:

Students are able to choose up to three different presentations on each of the three evenings. As it is possible to attend nine different career presentations during the week, we encourage all students and parents to take full advantage of this schedule.

A program of presentations will be provided in the near future for you to be able to plan the session times you wish to attend.

Career preparation is vitally important to any child’s future prospects and students are encour-aged to do a little research prior to the Expo in order to ask relevant questions, enjoy and make the most of this opportunity. Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to call me Yours sincerely Mark Croucher

The students were lucky enough to witness a phenomenal performance from an African drumming group. The group of three men were from Ghana and they took the students through a variety of cultural activities related to their homeland. They did a perfor-mance of drumming, singing and dancing with some pretty impressive acrobatic skills. The students were then broken up into three groups and they got to do some hands-on work-shops. There were a drumming work-shop where the students got to learn how to play the djembe drums and were even able to lead the group in playing their own beat. Another work-shop was doing some African dancing. This was enjoyed by all. The other workshop was about the African cul-ture in particular Ghanaian culture. All students had the opportunity to partici-pate in each of these activities and overwhelmingly the students (and Staff) loved it ."

In maths, we have been using our reading books

to learn about statistics and probability. We have

been counting the letters of the alphabet in sen-

tences and calculating various statistics.

"This term we are excited to have started our garden boat project. Her name is 'Poppy'. The boat has been named Poppy as she was donated to the school by one of our students grandfathers.

Now that the painting has finished, the plan is to plant her out with a flower and vegetable garden.

Keep an eye out and see how this project progresses"

GWR SWIMMING Years 7-12

On Wednesday the 25th March, students from Years 7-12 competed in the annual Greater Western Regional Swimming Championships which were held in Warrnambool. Students represented themselves and school very well achieving some good times, although no one placed in an event. I have no doubt that the students attended gained a lot from the experience especially in terms of racing against top level swimmers from around the region. Thanks to Georgia Wareham for assisting with duties on the day. Students who attended were:

Lachlan Wareham Jackson Boydon Sophie Goldsworthy Liam O’Flaherty Darcy Hobbs Tyler Fower Jake Tanner Geordie McDonald Issac Fowler Jordan Loader Isaac Wareham Alice Tanner Charlotte Gartland Pheobe Calvert

SPORTING SCHOOLS

Sporting Schools is a national programme available to all Australian schools.

It will engage more children in more sport based activity within schools and then convert their inter-est into club based settings.

Unfortunately our planned before school swimming and running club will not be going ahead in Term 2.

EQUESTRIAN TEAM Week 1 Term 2, 2015

1. Congratulations to the riders who competed in the Mt Emu Creek Interschool Dressage Challenge on the last Friday of Term 1. A cold, wet start gave way to a cool, windy but sunny day, and the grounds looked magnificent with the six new white arena sur-rounds laid out beside each other in a row. Riders included our experienced riders Asha, Lizzy, Airlia and Bridie McGuigan, and we welcomed Teneale Anders on her initiation ride in interschool competition, scary as it can seem! Asha, Lizzy and Airlia rode well, winning their individual sections with some well-performed tests, and Bridie McGuigan placed second her class - well done Bridie! Asha rode a stunner of a test on her chestnut mare ESB Irish Innocence, and in all Asha rode two horses, Airlia three, Liz-zy four, and Lizzy only ‘lost the plot’ in one test out of the seven she rode on the day, which is a pretty impressive effort Lizzy. The team reigned victorious, bringing home the banner. Well done team!

Overall results were:
