Peace and all good! In just a few days we will be celebra ng the great feast of Christmas. As we all know, this cele-brates the reality of the incarna on where God himself came down from heaven and was born as a baby. As Saint Irenaeus said, “God became human so that we might become like God.” God took on our humanity and thus making human nature di-vine. We Franciscans have always had the per-spec ve, which is solid within Church tradi on, that the Incarna on was planned by God from the very beginning of me. Even if Adam had not sinned, God s ll would have incarnated as an act of love. St. Thomas Aquinas had the perspec ve that Christ came into the world because of human sin-fulness. And thus, at least from my perspec ve, the Incarna on sounds like a divine rescue mission -- that humankind was so lost and so sinful that God had to take dras c ac on. While you can hold this perspec ve if you want to, we Franciscans be-lieve that the Incarna on was always in God's plan when the me was right. God's love simply over-flows and is forever crea ve. At this me of year also, I would like to thank everyone at the Parish and the Mission, all the staff and volunteers, all those involved in ministries and every parishioner for all they have done this year. Collec vely we can do incredible things to spread the news of God's love for every person and all of crea on. In this spirit of God's overflowing love, I wish each and every one of you a most joyful, holy and loving Christmas. In the spirit of Christmas, let us be grateful for all the wonderful blessings that God has given us. Let us not concentrate on our indi-vidual shortcomings and the brokenness of the world. Let us keep our eyes on Jesus. Ever mindful of his promises, let us simply rejoice in the good-ness of life.

Merry Christmas!

Fr. David Gaa, OFM Pastor

CHRISTMAS A young mother, her eyes shining with fa gue, who is arranging her hair; a father who finds himself alone with his pre y wife and baby, straightening the stable to make himself useful in some way; shepherds who bring cheese and perhaps also some curdled milk; sheep who look at their shepherds while blea ng; a donkey who is eyeing his manger changed into a cradle; an adorable swaddled baby whom one calls Savior, Christ and Lord: This is the mani-festa on of the goodness and the tenderness of God. This is the most fantas c birth in the history of humanity, the one which changed the face of the world! This is how far God humbled and compromised himself with us! This is Emmanuel! —From God’s Word Is Our Joy, Vol. 1 by Lucien Deiss, CSSp, copyright © 1998, World Library Publi-cations. p. 73

EMMANUEL

To name someone or something means that we have a rela onship with that en ty. Family names iden fy us with our heritage; nicknames denote familiarity or a spe-cial bond. In the Old Testament, the meaning of a name ran deep. It iden fied one’s mission, even one’s very be-ing. The amazing name “Emmanuel” was first u ered by Isaiah as he described to the frightened King Ahaz the promised one who would come to redeem the people. Emmanuel is not a frightening philosophical name, such as Omnipotent, Omniscient, Almighty. It does not con-note distance and transcendence. It does not generate reveren al fear. The name Emmanuel implies closeness and in macy and compassion. Emmanuel is the name given to the one who is coming. It means “God is with us.” God is entrusted to the care of a virgin, who will bear this child. Only God would be so compassionate to draw so near, to be so available and vulnerable. Only God could love this well.

MARÍA MADRE DE DIOS

1ro de enero del 2014 Día de Precepto

10:00 a.m. Misa (inglés) Centro Serra

¡Paz y Todo Bien! ¡Feliz Navidad!

Padre David Gaa, OFM Párroco
