For others it’s desire for self-sufficiency by turning their property into a farm. You don’t need 40 acres to be a farmer these days. The concept of homesteading has changed quite a bit since the bygone era of Ma and Pa Ingalls and their little house on the prairie. These days homesteading is not so much a necessity as it is a lifestyle choice. For some people, it’s about escaping urban density and having more space

to spread out. For others it’s desire for self-sufficiency by turning their property into a farm.

You don’t need 40 acres to be a farmer these days. You also don’t have to keep livestock, though chicken farming has become popular in recent years, even in urban areas. (Chickens are the easiest livestock to raise and there’s nothing like farm fresh eggs.)

With the decline of traditional farming, a trend is emerging: small acreage farming. You can do quite a bit with small acreage property. Just an acre or two is sufficient to sustain a bountiful garden.

There can be a variety of benefits to turning your small acreage property into a functional garden space. You can have your own source of produce year round. You can earn extra income by selling your garden bounty at your local farmers market. And you can save yourself all that repetitive mowing by growing food on your property instead of a decorative lawn.

Planning a garden involves many decisions: - Do you want to do raised beds or the more traditional plots and rows? - Someone mentioned “square foot gardening,” so what’s that all about? - Do you prefer conventional or organic garden produce?- What about pest control?- How is your property set for irrigation? There are many considerations to explore. If you’re just starting out, it’s best to start small and keep it simple as you learn the capabilities and capacity of your small acreage farm. Thankfully with the digital age we have so much information available at our fingertips. You can also stop by your local farmer market to glean knowledge from the experts.
