Experience.makes.a.big.difference..Last.season.was.a.tough.one.for.USF.Women's.Soccer,.a.young.team.top.heavy.with.underclassmen..With.only.four.seniors,.many.newcomers.were.thrown.into.action.right.away..Add.to.that.one.of.the most difficult schedules in the NCAA including.matches.against.perennial.power.North.Carolina.and.eventual.National.Champion.Portland.and.it.makes.for.a.rough.year.. Head.Coach.Pamela.Kalinoski.com-mented on last season's difficulties. "Last year.was.a.challenge.for.us...We.had.a.talented,.but.young.team...Our.schedule.was.one.of.the.toughest.in.the.whole.coun-try...We.played.some.great.soccer,.but.at.times.the.youth.of.the.team,.combined.with.the.strength.of.the.schedule,.proved.to.be.a real challenge.". The.schedule.doesn't.get.any.easier.this.season,.containing.matches.with.no.less.than.six.Top-20.teams.including.No.1.Portland,.No..2.Santa.Clara,.No..10.Cal,.No..15.Cal.State.Fullerton,.No..19.Stan-ford,.and.No..20.Pepperdine..With.a.year.of.experience.under.the.belt.of.the.many.underclassmen.and.a.group.of.seniors.and.juniors.ready.to.lead,.2006.looks.to.be.a.much.more.successful.year.when.the.team.opens.at.Fresno.State.on.August.25..Se-nior.forward.Chelsea.Hunt.will.be.expected.to.lead.the.team.again.after.earning.All-WCC.Second.Team.Honors.for.the.second.year.in.a.row..Hunt.led.the.team.with.10.goals,.two.assists.and.22.points. " As we move forward, I’m expecting last.year’s.weaknesses.to.become.team.strengths...The.youth.of.the.team.made.things difficult, but when you throw young players into the fire right away, they end up with.a.lot.more.experience...As.a.result,.we.have.a.lot.of.experienced.players.returning.to.the.team...With.some.great.new.talent,.and.a.host.of.returning.players.we.are.

Midfielder Jenny Jarvie (San Diego, CA).earned.All-Western.League.and.All-
CIF.honors.following.her.senior.year.at.Cathedral.Catholic..Forward.Kristina.Hall.(Berkeley,.CA).tallied.49.goals.and.26.as-sists.in.four.years.at.Berkeley.High.School.and.was.named.league.MVP.her.senior.year... Defender.Krissy.Synowicki.(Wood-bridge,.CA).will.add.depth.to.the.back.after.playing.four.years.of.Varsity.soccer.at.Lodi.High.School..She.was.named.All-League.defender.in.2004.and.MVP.in.2006..For-ward.Kendra.Liljequist.(Redmond,.WA).led.her.Tahoma.High.School.team.to.the.2005.Washington.State.Championship.and.earned.All-South.Puget.Sound.League.Honors..Forward.Samantha.Brand.(Denair,.CA).captured.Southern.Athletic.League.MVP.and.First.Team.honors.after.a.strong.senior.campaign. GoALkEEPERs. Last.season.was.a.big.question.mark.where.the.goalies.were.concerned.because.they.were.all.freshman..But.they.proved.to.be.tough.between.the.posts,.es-pecially.WCC-All.Freshman.GK.Hodgson.who.led.the.WCC.in.saves.per.game.(6.07).and.was.third.in.total.saves.(85)..Hodgson.ended.the.season.leading.Dons.goalies.in.minutes.with.1087:37.. Pohle.played.726:25.minutes.in.goal.and.was.tied.for.seventh.in.the.WCC.with.45.saves..Pohle.also.manned.the.posts.for.USF's.3-0.victory.over.Fresno.State..Annika Steig will also fight for time this season.after.a.solid.spring.. “Our.goalies.are.certainly.an.eclectic.bunch..They.all.have.their.own.individual.talents.that.make.for.a.strong.goalie.tan-dem..We.really.do.have.three.solid.options.in.goal.and.we’re.hoping.that.a.year.of.experience.will.go.a.long.way,”.Kalinoski.commented.

. So.the.character.of.USF.remains.intact.today.as.it.prepares.for.the.new.mil-lennium, as it was in the Gold Rush days when St. Ignatius Academy first opened its.doors.on.Market.Street.in.1855.. One.of.USF's.hallmarks.today,.as.it.has.been.for.some.150.years,.is.the.strong.bond.that.develops.between.student.and.faculty..The.average.class.size.at.USF.is.about.18... Included.among.more.than.56,000.USF.living.alumni.are.judges,.legislators,.Pulitzer.Prize.winners.and.leaders.in.business,.education,.public.service,.the.arts.and.athletics.. USF.intercollegiate.athletic.programs.have.always.enjoyed.a.strong.tradition.and field 15 teams, competing in the West Coast Conference at the NCAA Division I.level... USF volleyball earned the first NCAA Tournament bid in program history in 2003, while the USF women’s golf team qualified for its fifth consecutive berth in.the.2005.NCAA.Regional.Tournament..The.USF.men’s.soccer.team.captured.the.2004.and.2005.WCC.title,.the.program’s.10th.and.11th.and.advanced.to.the.NCAA’s.for.an.unprecedented.29th.time..The.Diamond.Dons.made.history.in.2006.by claiming the first West Coast Conference Championship in school history en route.to.their.inaugural.NCAA.Regional.berth.. Father.Privett,.62,.was.born.in.San.Francisco..He.entered.the.Society.of.Jesus.in.1960.and.is.a.graduate.of.The.Catholic.University.of.America,.the.Jesuit.School.of.Theology.in.Berkeley and Gonzaga University. He is an expert in the fields of.Catechetics.and.the.role.of.the.Hispanic.community.in.the.Catholic.Church.Prior.to.his.appointment.at.USF,.Father.Privett.served.as.provost.and.academic.vice.president.at.Santa.Clara.University..As.provost,.he. was. responsible. for. oversight. of. student. life,. intercollegiate.athletics,. as. well. as. academic. affairs.. While. teaching. at. . When.the.West.Coast.Conference.got. its.start.back.in.1952,.the.founders.really.had.only.one.goal.in.mind.-.to.create.a.convenient.way.for.five Bay Area schools to play basketball. What has.grown. from. that.original. vision.50.years.ago.is.a.marvelous.cohesive.athletics.league.which.is.competitive.at.the.national.level.in.13.sports.. The. eight. current. members. of. the. WCC.span.the.Western.United.States.from.Canada.to.Mexico..Though.the.institutions.range.from.the.pine.forests.of.Eastern.Washington.to.the.sun-drenched.beaches.of.Southern.California,.the.combined.excellence.in.athletics.and.academics.sets.the.conference.apart.on.the.national.scene.and.draws.the.individual.institutions.together.in.a.common.mission.. The. WCC. sponsors. championships. in.baseball,. men's. and. women's. basketball,.men's.and.women's.cross-country,.men's.and.women's. golf,. women's. rowing,. men's. and.women's. soccer,. men's. and. women's. tennis.and.volleyball. The league was chartered by five Bay Area institutions (Pacific, Saint Mary's, San Fran-cisco,.San.Jose.State.and.Santa.Clara).as.the.California Basketball Association, playing its first game.on.January.2,.1953..After.two.seasons.of.play.under.that.name,.the.conference.expanded.to.include.Loyola.Marymount.and.Pepperdine.in 1955, and became the "West Coast Athletic
Conference" in 1956. The name was shortened to "West Coast Conference" in 1989. The current full-time.lineup.of.WCC.schools.has.remained.unchanged.since.1979,.making.the.WCC.the.third.most.stable.conference.in.the.country.. This. year. marks. the. 13th. anniversary. of.WCC.women's.soccer.and.since.its.inception.in.1992,.it.has.evolved.into.the.second-ranked.
women's.soccer. league. in. the.nation,.behind.just.the.Atlantic.Coast.Conference.(ACC)..The.conference set a new record in 2001 when five men's and five women's soccer teams qualified for.the.NCAA.Tournament.-.an.unprecedented.occurrence.. In. 2002. the. women's. side. once.again sent five teams to the NCAA Tournament as.Santa.Clara,.Portland,.Pepperdine,.and.San.Diego all qualified for the NCAA Tournament. For the first time in league history a pair of WCC teams met in the national finals with the Broncos,.the.2001.defending.NCAA.Champions.

WCC.schools.have.advanced.to.the.NCAA.Tournament.47.times.with.18.trips.to.the.Final.Four.and.three.national.championships..Santa.Clara. leads. the.way.with.14.consecutive.ap-pearances, including eight trips to the final four, a.national.title.and.a.runner-up.showing,.while.Portland.has.received.13.NCAA.bids.with.eight.Final.Four.appearances,.including.a.runner-up.finish in 1995 and titles in 2002 and 2005. San Diego.(7),.Pepperdine.(5),.Saint.Mary's.(3).and.Loyola.Marymount.(1).have.also.reached.the.postseason.. As.for.its.overall.success,.the.WCC.has.an-nually.advanced.at.least.one.team.to.a.national.championship semifinal since 1989.
