Dear Colleague,

Get ready to join us in the Golden State for the NAGAP 27th Annual Conference! The Conference Planning Committee has been working tirelessly to create a program that is intellectually stimulating and professionally relevant, with an abundance of networking opportunities and a little time to relax and refresh. You’ll find all this and more in one great location – the Manchester Grand Hyatt in sunny San Diego! The Manchester Grand Hyatt includes a spa, tennis/sports courts, on-site restaurants and many retail opportunities nearby in the Seaport Village and The Headquarters at Seaport District.

Again this year, the Professional Development Committee has planned a Pre-Conference Institute (PCI), which is a half-day program on April 30, 2014, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. Featuring a presentation on the various legal issues that can arise within graduate enrollment management, the PCI is an intensive program structured to allow participants to delve deeply into this important topic.

The conference will kick off with the Welcome Reception in the Exhibit Hall on Wednesday evening. This reception is a great way to network with colleagues and meet exhibitors while enjoying delicious food and drinks. We hope you will make your travel plans accordingly to be able to join us.

On Thursday, we are fortunate to have Dr. Mark DeVolder, renowned change expert and author, as our keynote speaker. Dr. DeVolder will share his thoughts on how to adapt to extreme change. Thursday evening’s off-site event will take us to the USS Midway, where we will celebrate the rich military heritage of the region with tours of the ship and entertainment.

Joining us Saturday morning for the closing brunch speaker, Dr. Debra Noumair, Professor of Psychology and Education at the Teachers College, Columbia University, who will provide great take-aways for dealing with individual and organizational change.

We remain committed to making the educational offerings current and relevant so they meet our membership’s diverse needs and interests. This year our conference has been constructed around the theme of “Managing Change in Graduate Enrollment Management: Navigating Uncharted Territory.” Our educational sessions span adapting to 21st century learners and marketplace; admissions and enrollment; career, staff and personal development; compliance, legal and ethical issues; globalization; graduate student funding and financial aid; marketing and enrollment management; student life cycle in a GEM model, as well as managing change. From graduate admissions professionals to educational administrators, enrollment management decision-makers, student affairs professionals and beyond, this conference is designed to meet your needs. All are encouraged to attend!

We all work diligently and are committed to our fields. This conference is a chance to step back, connect with colleagues and remind ourselves why we do this important work. On behalf of the Conference Planning Committee, I invite you to join us in San Diego. You deserve to be celebrated.

PRE-CONFERENCE INSTITUTEAvoiding Liability & Legal Pitfalls While Managing Change in Graduate Enrollment ManagementPresenter: Joan Van Tol, General Counsel, Law School Admission Council (LSAC)The goal of this Pre-Conference Institute is to help you identify and avoid some of the legal pitfalls associated with managing change in graduate enrollment management. This session will focus on legal issues related to applications for admission and recruiting activities; social media in enrollment management; background checks, including criminal history and credit checks; applicants with disabilities; race conscious admission and recruiting practices; records management and FERPA; and other issues participants wish to raise.

Apply for a Pre-Conference Institute FellowshipNAGAP encourages its members to apply for a Pre-Conference Institute fellowship, which is a great way to stretch professional development dollars during a time of increasing financial challenges. Two fellowships are available for NAGAP members. Each fellowship covers the Pre-Conference Institute registration fee.

To apply for a fellowship, email your name, title, institution, contact information (including address, phone, fax and email) and a 250-word essay saved as a Microsoft Word document to Kathryn Kendall, Assistant Dean for Admissions and Recruitment, State University of New York at Buffalo, at [email protected]. Please include "NAGAP Fellowship" in the subject line.

The essay should address how you think the Pre-Conference Institute would assist you in your professional development and how your participation would help you to avoid liability and legal pitfalls while managing change in graduate enrollment management.

Fellowship applications must be submitted by Friday, March 28, 2014. Fellowship applicants will be notified of the results prior to the Annual Conference registration deadline.

Closing Brunch KeynoteDebra A. Noumair, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology and Education, Teachers College, Columbia University

Professor Noumair received her masters and doctoral degrees in Counseling Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University. Having spent nine years on the faculty of the Counseling

Psychology program, she joined the Social-Organizational program faculty in 1999. After joining the program, she coordinated the PhD Program for two years. Professor Noumair’s primary area of research focuses on group and organizational dynamics and the application of systems thinking to individual, team, and organizational performance. A related domain of inquiry is examining the influence of diversity and authority on leadership and followership behavior in groups, organizations, institutions and society. She teaches courses on organization consultation and change, process consultation, group dynamics and executive coaching. Her teaching, research and scholarship and service are all aimed at the application and integration of theory, research and practice. Toward that end, Professor Noumair is the Director of the Advanced Organization Development and Human Resource Management Program sponsored by Teachers College. She is also on the faculty of leadership development programs sponsored by the Department of Executive Education at Columbia University Business School, by the Simmons School of Management and by Mercer Delta’s Executive Learning Center. Professor Noumair is a fellow of the A. K. Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems and a member of the American Psychological Association and the Academy of Management. A licensed psychologist in New York, Dr. Noumair maintains a private practice of organization consultation and executive coaching.

Enhanced Education SessionsIn an effort to meet individual learning styles and provide enhanced networking opportunities, NAGAP is again offering various format options for educational session offerings for the 27th Annual Conference. Please view the session topics on pages 6-10 for a list of the sessions we expect to offer. Each session indicates the category topic and presentation format.

Engage with Panelists. Panels consist of three to four participants and a moderator. These professionals, from across the country and around the world, discuss the topic at hand and bring perspectives informed by their expertise and related experience.

Discover and learn from Presentations. These are educational sessions in which the presenter(s) shares information with a theater-style audience. Presenters integrate media (e.g., PowerPoint, video clips, links to websites) and engages the audience throughout the course of the session. Presentations are structured to allow time for audience participation, take-home messages and questions and answers.

Participate in a Special Interest Forum. The Special Interest Forum (SIF), led by a facilitator, is a roundtable discussion during which attendees may discuss a specific topic of interest in a small group setting. This format maximizes the opportunity for open dialogue among conference attendees, as participants share their experiences and thoughts.

Learn what various companies are doing and can offer the field of graduate enrollment management in a Vendor Presentation. Participants receive in-depth details on specific products or services that they may be considering using in their daily work. Vendors share how a product or service works and how it may address specific needs of session participants.

NAGAP Resource CenterNAGAP will once again offer an area exclusively for networking. The time between sessions will be approximately 15 minutes to facilitate communication.

We are asking each conference attendee to bring a supply (approximately 25) of the best promotional materials their respective schools use to share with other attendees. These materials will be available in the networking area. If you are looking for additional resources, this is the place to look for extra materials you want to take home with you. This area will also feature a job and message board for posting open positions at your institution, looking for jobs or to leave messages for colleagues.

Community Service Project

THE NEEDAfter working with gang members for five years, Reality Changers Founder, Christopher Yanov, felt that it was just not right that most inner-city teenagers today know more people who have been shot or killed in the street than people who are on the road to college.

THE SOLUTIONAs a response, Reality Changers began in May 2001 with four eighth grade students near downtown San Diego with the hope of building first generation college students. Starting with just $300, Reality Changers has now given more scholarship awards to college-bound students than any other single organization in San Diego County since 2006 and became California’s leading tutoring program for scholarships in June 2009.Reality Changers consists of three core programs:

COLLEGE TOWN for selected 8th-11th graders who will become first generation college students

COLLEGE APPS ACADEMY for all 11th and 12th graders seeking to gain admission to college

ALUMNI NETWORK for all program graduates seeking professional connections and lifelong friendships

Today, Reality Changers’ 500 current members and 500 program graduates have earned approximately $40,000,000 in scholarships. The U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan met and visited with Reality Changers on three occasions and declared the program a “model for the nation." Most recently, Reality Changers was featured in a nationwide documentary on PBS.
