A FEW THINGS ABOUT NANDOS...

As a long-time fan of Nando’s I have sent many emails to their head office asking for a Nando’s in Chelmsford, so I was really pleased to finally see one open here in April 2010, in the town centre next to Zizzi! For those who don’t already know, Nando’s is a national brand with currently over 230 restaurants in the UK and Ireland and opening up around twenty new ones every year. Their quirky, fun way of working shines through, which is why Nando’s staff voted them #1 in The Sunday Times “25 Best Big Companies to Work for 2010”.

When you enter Nando’s you are shown to a seat and then explained the Nando’s concept. You choose what you would like from the menu and then order and pay at the counter. Quite quickly your food is brought to your table, and then just enjoy! The food is very good, served with just the amount of spice/flavour you like. My favourite mains include the classic PERi-PERi chicken and Prego steak roll, and for sides I really like the sweet potato mash, coleslaw and corn on the cob. The menu is quite vast and always growing, and offers numerous veggie options. The restaurant also has a nice buzz, with a constant stream of new people in and fed people leaving. I love the fact that you can just turn up, eat and leave within an hour, but there really is no rush, so take as long as you want.

The restaurant is full of art which they are really proud of and take seriously. They actually commission original works of art from South African artists of all ages. Their collection is well over 3000 pieces and is really diverse, and they have helped set up an independent studio with a subsidised diploma course for aspiring artists. In fact, art is so important to Nando’s that the opening of the Chelmsford restaurant was delayed by a week to allow for the completion of an entire handcrafted wall (it’s on the right as you walk in) by an artist flown over from New Zealand! The wall is on both the bottom and the upper level and is really very good. Also find out the Legend of Barcelos Cockerel on your next visit; it’s written on the wall!
