NNAARRHHAA HHoorrsseess ffoorr HHeerrooeessThe transition of the NARHA Horses forHeroes Task Force to a standing committeehas begun so that this needed area of EAATwill continue to receive the attention andresources of the association. The NARHAHorses for Heroes Task Force held a success-ful pre-conference workshop at the 2009NARHA National Conference. The NARHAHorses for Heroes initiative has continued thesuccessful partnership with the Departmentof Veterans Affairs, resulting in almost 50Veterans Administration centers inquiringabout EAAT.To date, the association hasabout 25 centers with a NARHA Horses forHeroes program serving as mentors to anestimated 40 centers working on starting aNARHA Horses for Heroes program.

EEdduuccaattiioonn DDeeppaarrttmmeennttThe NARHA Education Department coordi-nates education venues, oversees educationalcontent and supports the abstract reviewprocess for NARHA’s National Conference.

In 2009-2010 a task force began studying aprocess for ensuring that there are no con-flicts of interest between certification andeducation functions within NARHA, in keep-ing with voluntary standards within the cre-dentialing industry. A work group was createdto review the process of training NARHAmembers, who then teach evaluators, site visi-tors, CAT course faculty, etc. to improve con-sistency and quality of training programs. Inaddition, the NARHA Health & EducationAdvisory Group reviewed nearly 90 abstracts

submitted and from those abstracts built a comprehensive and varied educationalschedule for the 2010 NARHA NationalConference. The reformulated NARHAEquine Welfare Task Force (originally theEquine Advocacy Task Force) gathered infor-mation from NARHA members about educa-tional content needed with regard to theequine partners involved in EAAT work. Thecommittee enlisted abstracts and presenta-tions to be offered at the 2010 NARHANational Conference.

OOnnlliinnee LLaauunncchheessMuch of the NARHA Membership Division’sefforts in 2009-10 focused on preparing forthe launch of NARHA’s new website with anew web-based database operating in thebackground—enabling members to access andupdate their own accounts and access a com-prehensive online membership directory. Theofficial launch will be recorded in the 2010-2011 fiscal year during which continuousimprovements for efficiency are being incor-porated in day-to-day operations.

NARHA created a Facebook™ page in Aprilof 2010, boasting almost 2,000 fans by the endof the 2009-2010 fiscal year, and the numbercontinues to grow. The NARHA Facebook™page has expanded interac-tion with association mem-bers as well as participants atcenters and those interestedin becoming participants. It isa great venue to share sto-ries, photos and links towebsites that are of interestto NARHA members.

The Membership OversightCommittee approved a newNARHA Horses for HeroesEquestrian Award proposedby the NARHA Horses forHeroes Task Force. The com-mittee also updated the cri-teria for the regional andnational instructor awards. The committee members’efforts in 2009-2010 focused

on enhancing resources for NARHA StateChairs for use in facilitating member connec-tions and outreach to members at the statelevel.

NARHA introduced a higher education mem-bership in May 2010. Since the approval by theNARHA Board of Trustees, efforts havefocused on establishing processes, creating asimple but clear application process anddeveloping marketing materials for the mem-bership category. This membership offers uni-versities, colleges and other institutions thatoffer educational content an opportunity toalign curricula with NARHA’s educationalcontent and facilitates the certification forstudents interested in becoming NARHA certified instructors at these institutions.

VVoolluunntteeeerr RReeccooggnniittiioonnVolunteers continue to deliver much of theoutput NARHA offers to its members, poten-tial members, constituents and the industry. When all state, regional and national volun-teers that work on NARHA’s behalf arecounted, nearly 200 volunteers contributeover 20,000 hours directly to the association’swork in a multitude of conference calls andface-to-face meetings at regional and nationalconferences. These hours don’t include all ofthe side emails, phone conversations and barnaisle meetings that take place in moving theorganization’s work forward.

The association continued the tradition estab-lished in 2008 of recognizing the association’svolunteers through the NARHA National

Volunteer Recognition Awards. Volunteer lead-ers were nominated by NARHA’s staff, andthe NARHA Board of Trustees voted for thewinners who were recognized in each ofthese areas of programs and standards, educa-tion and membership at the 2009 NARHANational Conference held in Ft. Worth, TX.

MMeemmbbeerrsshhiipp RReetteennttiioonnThe association continues to maintain asteady level of membership. The lag effect ofthe recession on nonprofits and manyNARHA member centers is felt in some ofthe non-dues activity of the association. However, NARHA continues to retain mem-bers in its key categories with an instructorretention rate of 98% and a center retentionrate of 91%.

The full integration of EFMHA members, programs and its volunteer leadership, asannounced last year has been the focusof staff and volunteers in 2009-2010. Thecommitment made to approach equineassisted activities and therapies in a man-ner in which the whole person is beingserved through partnering with thewhole horse is being integrated intomany of the association’s activities andphilosophies.

The NARHA Integration SteeringCommittee merged NARHA’s andEFMHA’s vision and mission statementsinto unified statements and are continuingto work on fully integrating the codes ofethics. This committee continues toaddress opportunities, issues and con-cerns from all association members as theprocess of integration moves forward.

The effects of this process are alreadybeing felt as members representingequine facilitated psychotherapy (EFP)and equine facilitated learning (EFL) arenow participating on almost all associa-tion committees. Standards are in fieldtest addressing the welfare of equines inNARHA center programs. A system forensuring that EFP/EFL articles, presenta-tions and other content continue to besubmitted for publication, presentationand distribution has been implementedso that all members can benefit.

Although the economic recovery continued tofalter throughout 2009-2010, the NARHAMarketing Division took steps to (1) strengthenNARHA’s fundraising capabilities (2) facilitatethe design and the launch of a new websitewith the capacity to enhance social networkingand online marketing efforts and (3) increasethe visibility, branding recognition and leader-ship role of NARHA both at home and abroad.

FFuunnddrraaiissiinngg && MMaarrkkeettiinngg AAlllliiaanncceessDuring the fiscal year 2009-2010, theMarketing Department forged an alliance withEquestrian Collections, one of the world’slargest equestrian web stores in connectionwith HorseBooksEtc.com. EquestrianCollections built a new NARHA store ontheir site and an EAAT-focused products areawhich allows NARHA to market its educa-tional materials and logo merchandise in avery professional manner. In addition the part-nership resulted in the development of theCLICK4CASH program which was launchedand offered to NARHA centers at the 2009conference. The free program returns a per-centage of each order placed through a cen-ter’s website Shop & Change a Life button.Over 60 centers had joined in the firstmonths and are marketing the idea in theircommunities to reap the rewards. EquestrianCollections has devoted a full-time staff member who promotes the program andencourages centers to sign up.

NARHA also partnered with Capital One®

Card Lab Connect to offer a special Visa®

Platinum credit card to NARHA members andsupporters. One percent of every purchase acardholder makes is automatically donated to

NARHA, as well as a one-time donation of $50upon a cardholder’s first purchase.

Throughout this fiscal year, the MarketingDepartment has been actively promoting agrassroots fundraiser,The NARHAbarProgram. This partnership is designed to givecenters a quick revenue boost by activelyengaging families in supporting their centersthrough the sale of quality chocolate bars.

In January 2010, NARHA filled a newly creat-ed corporate and individual partnershipscoordinator position with an in-house personwith prior experience in fundraising. This hasallowed NARHA to lend consistency and

a focused effort in supporting sponsors, exhibitors and corporate partners andapproaching donors.

IImmpprroovveedd MMeemmbbeerr CCoommmmuunniiccaattiioonnssThe NARHA marketing staff led the buildingof the architecture for and aesthetics of thenew NARHA website. Starting with over 200pages, the redesign and remapping of so muchinformation was daunting but long-needed andvery exciting. Staff committee liaisons workedhard with each committee to make sure theircontent was represented as they wished.Once the structure was built and the contentwas ready, a team of programmers worked tobuild the site and integrate it seamlessly withthe new NARHA database. The actual launchoccurred in fiscal year 2010-2011; however, the entire NARHA staff participated in oneway or another with the newsite in 2009-2010 withresounding success. NARHA’sonline audience continues togrow with an impressive15,401,421 website visitswith the Find a Center linkand classified ads sectionsleading the number of visits.

NARHA’s Marketing andCommunications Depart-ment continues to keepmembers abreast of the lat-est news within the EAATcommunity and enhancemembers’ professionaldevelopment with e-mailblasts, bi-monthly NARHANews, online section news-

letters and NARHA’s Strides. By adhering to amore cost-efficient 48-page magazine whenev-er possible, NARHA’s Strides has been able totrim costs while adding 4-8 pages per issue.

NNaattiioonnaall && IInntteerrnnaattiioonnaall EExxppoossuurreeNARHA was represented at the RockyMountain Horse Expo and several EquineAffaires. In January, the National Western StockHorse Show in Denver, CO, which draws closeto 700,000 spectators annually, held a thera-peutic riding demonstration thanks to PrayingHands Ranch, The Right Step and NARHAHorse Ambassador, Nevada Joe.

NARHA played an even more prominent leadership role in the global EAAT communitywhen FRDI/HETI welcomed Gisela Heimsath-Rhodes as as its new executive director in 2009.

Gisela has served on the boards of bothFRDI/HETI and NARHA, and has been anactive committee member in both organiza-tions. NARHA’s Marketing and Communi-cations Director was also appointed by theFRDI/HETI Executive Committee to a taskforce for the planning and implementation ofthe 2012 Congress. In August 2009, NARHAexhibited at the FRDI/HETI Congress inGermany, which drew 660 attendees from 39countries, furthering NARHA’s goal to becomea bigger player within the international EAATcommunity.

2009 NARHA National ConferenceA very successful 2009 NARHA NationalConference and Annual Meeting drew 650attendees and another record-setting 222 first-time participants. Attendees came toFort Worth, TX from the United States and 11 other countries. Thanks to the dedication and hardwork of the host commit-tee and the NARHA staff, approximately 95% of sur-vey respondents rated thesession content as currentand informative and ap-praised the Funders’ Forumas valuable and enjoyable.

Attendees appreciated thechance to choose from fivetracks during each educa-tional session and havingthe annual meeting andcommittee updates sched-uled in the morning overbreakfast. Once again, both

the 2009 NARHA Horse Expo, held at theCowtown Coliseum, and Saturday night’s inspi-rational banquet drew rave reviews. Despitethe continued economic downturn, NARHAexceeded budget projections by nearly 7.2%.

2009-2010 Regional ConferencesIn 2009-2010 NARHA’s regions hosted nearly1,000 participants at conferences around theU.S. These regional conferences are a verycost-effective way for members to earn con-tinuing education hours, network with theirpeers at the local level and give feedback toNARHA Regional Representative andNARHA State Chairs through standardshearings, NARHA updates and state meet-ings.This year each region was asked to hosta “World Café” style discussion about whatNARHA means to them and the associationname change.

At the same time, it has been target-ing new supporters and avenues for cause-related marketing through grant writing anddonor appeals and soliciting corporate spon-sorships and advertising that support theassociation’s priorities.

In September 2009, NARHA was pleased toannounce a three-year agreement with long-time corporate friend Purina, engaging thecompany as a national sponsor. Just before thefiscal year’s end, Purina included NARHA in anonline promotion (in addition to the sponsor-ship contract) which qualified Purina to be theTitle Sponsor of the 2010 NARHA NationalConference, scheduled November 3-6, 2010 inDenver. The American Quarter Horse Associ-ation also began to operate under a two-yearsponsorship agreement with NARHA.

This agreement has already benefitedNARHA and its member centers in many ways, from centers receiving America’s Horse Caresgrants and forming a committee to work oncompetitive riding opportunities for NARHAriders within AQHA, to far-reaching exposurethrough the AQHA Journal, which inspires andeducates a new audience about NARHA.

  • 2009-2010 NARHA Annual Report

NARHA strives to maintain its level of activi-ties and benefits for its membership whilecarefully administering its funds. To this end,NARHA closed the 2009-2010 fiscal year withan unaudited profit of $13,427, a very goodreport in an unsettled economy.

Additionally, 73% of all expenditures weredirectly spent on NARHA membership andprograms. The National Charities InformationBureau (NCIP) recommends a minimum of60% be directed to program use.

The NARHA Board of Trustees recentlyapproved the budget for 2010-2011 at $1.9million. The emphasis will again focus onmembership benefits and broadening our baseby increasing membership.

As a part of member support, NARHA pur-chased a new phone system and new serverto improve services to members through bet-ter phone communications and computerusage. The new database and website werescheduled to launch at the beginning of the2010-2011 fiscal year and have been a hugeimprovement.

The 2009-2010 audit will be completed inOctober with the annual 990 tax return available in early November.

NARHA staff, volunteers and managementhave worked hard to continue to fulfill ourmission and provide a consistent level of service and benefits to its membership. At the same time, NARHA has been makingimprovements to its infrastructure that will

make it possible to ensure sustainable fiscalgrowth and position us to support our strategic plan.

Our particular thanks go to the continueddedication of the NARHA Finance Committeewho have devoted many volunteer hours tomake sure that NARHA meets its financialgoals.
