NATIVITY OF MARY CONTRIBUTION REPORT 1/19/2018 & 1/20/2019

MASS INTENTIONS

When the Mass is being offered for a loved one, there has been an unofficial expectation that the family of the loved one bring forward the gifts. This was recently dis-cussed at an usher’s meeting with Fr. Bob and Maria present. From now on, when booking a Mass in the of-fice, the family will be invited to bring forward the gifts at that particular Mass. It is acceptable to wish not to do so. If this is the case, please let the ushers know at that particular Mass that your family does not wish to bring forward the gifts. Furthermore, if the family does wish to bring forward the gifts, please identify yourselves to the ushers at that particular Mass as not all ushers are fa-miliar with every parishioner. Thank you for your consid-eration as we prepare Parish Worship. Please see Maria Milazzo with any questions.

SECOND COLLECTION

There is an upcoming change in the way ushers will col-lect a second collection. We will begin doing the second collection immediately following the first collection. Ush-ers will take the first collection as usual, compile the money in one basket and then return to the pews to be-gin the second collection. Both baskets will be brought forward as an offertory. The reason for this change comes purely from a liturgical standpoint. The place in which we have been currently doing second collections (post-communion) is not an appropriate spot. The Gen-eral Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) states in paragraph 73 during The Preparation of the Gifts: “...money or other gifts for the poor or for the Church, brought by the faithful or collected in the church, are acceptable.” Post Communion, the GIRM only indicates that a “canticle of praise,” which is our Song of Praise, may be sung and then goes directly into the Prayer after Communion. We will begin this new procedure during the next second collection which will be the weekend of February 16-17, 2019. Please see Fr. Bob or Maria Milazzo with any questions.

PALMS NEEDED

We will be burning last year’s palms (received on Palm Sunday) on Tuesday, March 5th, after the Mass as we prepare for Ash Wednesday. Please send in your palms from last year by Monday, March 4th, to either the Parish Office or School Office. There will also be a bas-ket in the narthex that you may leave your palms in. Please see Maria Milazzo with any questions.

Catholic Charities 2nd Collection Next Weekend

For every dollar of assistance given in 2018, Catholic Charities had to turn away an additional $3 in requests for food, hygiene, rent and utility assistance. This 2nd collection will assistance their efforts to support the needy in Kansas City.

We are so proud of our partnership with the F.I.R.E. Foun-dation. Please read these powerful words from one of our parents about the effect an inclusive education at Nativity of Mary School has had on their daughter. God is Good All the Time!

When someone asks us how our daughter Jaylee is doing at Nativity of Mary School, our response to them seems to always include this word – thrive. She is growing and developing vigorously. She is flourishing. She is thriving. Jaylee was born with Down syndrome and has associated learning challenges common with the diagnosis. Toward the end of her fourth-grade year in our local public school, Jaylee’s educational school team felt strongly that she primarily needed to be educated in a self-contained classroom – a classroom that consists of individuals with com-parable learning styles. We felt strongly that Jaylee needed to be educated in a classroom alongside peers with and without disabilities, as she will be required as an adult to live and work with individuals with and without disabilities. We also felt strongly that her peers with and without disabilities would learn as much from her as she would learn from them. We began looking at different alternatives for education for Jaylee. In our research, my husband Tony learned of the FIRE program and its goal of educating students with special needs in an inclusive environment within the Catholic school system. He learned Nativity of Mary School offered the FIRE program and quickly received a return phone call from the school’s principal, Mary Parrish. We met with Mrs. Parrish, brought Jaylee to meet with her, and felt a peace that we had found our answer. From the very first day of school, Jaylee has been loved, accepted, and challenged to grow and develop to the best of her ability. She is honored for working hard at her level of learning and Jaylee is included as a full contributing member of her fifth-grade classroom. It has been rewarding to see her classmates and school professionals rallying around her and supporting her on days that have been more difficult for her. She loves her “fifth-grade friends” and looks forward to going to school. In turn, we have felt completely welcomed as a new family to Nativity of Mary School. The inclusion extends beyond the classroom and is simply a part of the overall environment. Environment opportunities abound at Nativity of Mary School, and have included monthly coffee with the principal, fund raisers, and family events. Jaylee walked in a community parade, performed at an annual mayor’s concert, and partici-pated in the Girls on the Run program with her peers. She would be involved in everything if time allowed. It is heart-warming to see Jaylee welcomed by her friends at school and by their families at school activities and community events. It is satisfying to see her thriving.

FEBRUARY 10, 2019 - THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Today’s readings recount three theophanies, or particular manifestations of God’s presence. The prophet Isaiah is caught up in a dramatic scene of heavenly worship, with a royal throne, burning embers, and seraphim singing, Holy, holy, holy. Isaiah is overwhelmed. In the responsorial psalm, the assembly adds its own worship to that of the seraphim: In the sight of the angels, I will sing your praises, Lord (Psalm 138:1).

Paul reminds the Corinthians of his own experience of a post-Resurrection appearance of the Lord, making him an apos-tle, but one born abnormally (1 Corinthians 15:8), since he had no acquaintance with the earthly Jesus. The first of those who did know the earthly Jesus were surprised by fishing advice from the teacher who had commandeered Simon’s boat, resulting in an extraordinary catch. Although less colorful than those of Isaiah or Paul, this theophany was just as overwhelming.

WHEN GOD APPEARS . . . Scripture recounts several instances of God calling persons to be leaders, prophets, apostles, or for other tasks. In most of them, a divine messenger appears to someone and directs them to do X. However, in today’s readings, there is no explicit directive for Isaiah to deliver God’s message, or for the fishermen to follow Jesus. Instead, the accounts focus on the way that God appears. The respective calls result from the recognition of God’s presence in the experience. That recognition creates an openness to whatever God might want.

. . . OUR RESPONSE IS WHAT MATTERS Isaiah’s immediate reaction to the marvelous events he has seen was an acute awareness of his own sinfulness: Woe is me . . . For I am a man of unclean lips (Isaiah 6:5). In the ancient world, contact between holy objects or environ-ments and profane things or persons was a contamination--human beings were thought to contaminate any place where God’s presence was known to dwell, and hence were unclean. Only after he volunteers ( Here I am. . . send me! [Isaiah 6:8]) does Isaiah learn what he is being asked to do.

The catch of fish in Luke lacks the color of Isaiah’s theophany, but it evoked a response from Simon similar to that of Isaiah: Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man (Luke 5:8). He was not alone; all those with him were seized with astonishment (5:9). The overwhelming catch of fish was just as much an overwhelming experience of God for Simon as were the seraphim for the prophet Isaiah.

This is very good news for the rest of us, since our own theophanies are almost never as colorful as Isaiah’s, or as dra-matic as an unusually large catch of fish. But they are there, moments in our lives when we become acutely aware of God’s presence and understand more clearly our own humanity and our need for God’s mercy. That understanding, in turn, can make us open to how God is calling us and to what we are being called to do.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The Reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor.

At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ’s total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God’s own life. We are to be-come what we receive: the body of Christ.

On Sundays, this self-giving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient. Yet the act of giving from our abundance, and attending to the needs of the poor, opens us up to participation in the changes the Reign of God requires.
