The Exalted Ruler’s Message
Hello Brothers and Sisters!
Another Grand Lodge Convention has come and gone. It
was great to meet Elks from all over the country and listen to
what they have to share as far as successes and struggles.
The biggest struggle the Elks face is the decrease in
membership. It is nationwide and it was a major focus of the
convention and continued during several smaller seminars.
During one of the membership seminars there was discussion about how the most active lodges were the most
successful. The question was asked “Do you have an ELKS LODGE with a bar?“ or a
“BAR with an elks lodge?” Think about it! More convention information is included
in the bulletin. Summer is coming to an end and with it comes a change of seasons. A time of
change has come to the Lodge as well. Circumstances have left a void in the grand scheme of things. Things that were taken for granted continue to pop up and we need
people to step up to try and fill that void. My first message referred to the people that
work behind the scenes, invisible and avoiding the limelight and sadly a chain reaction is
taking place of good Elks that put in countless hours pulling back due to an unfortunate
situation.
I know that the ERs message is supposed to be upbeat and I have tried to keep it that
way but there comes a time to be up front and serious. You have seen the “Blasts” asking
for help and there is a signup sheet on the board in the members lounge. On August 4th a
blast went out stating that the golf tournament would be cancelled unless volunteers
came forth and take it over. As a result some of “the regulars” stepped up with a few
new people, but again many of the volunteers are people who volunteer all the time. The
officers and the small crew of constant volunteers are maxed out and burning out. We work our hardest and do our best with what we have for help. I was told face to face all
you have to do is ask. I have asked and received answers like “I am here to relax” or
“I’ve done my time-ask someone else” or just a flat out “No”.
This is to every member!!! I am asking you to step forward and volunteer! We are
struggling to staff events and they are a major source of income. If we do not have
enough people (and I do not mean just officers and trustees) to staff a function we may
be forced to cancel it. It is time for us to come together as a Lodge of volunteers. The
other Lodges do it and we can too! Please help make this Lodge a place people want to
come to again. I hope this has not fallen on deaf ears as this is important. If you don’t
know how to volunteer or what to do you can see me or any of the officers or trustees. If
they don’t have an immediate answer for you they will find it. Thank you for listening.
Fraternally,
Pam Poirier, Exalted Ruler

JOHN D. AMEN GRAND EXALTED RULER
2014–2015 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the U.S.A.
John D. Amen was born in Denver, Colorado; the third of three sons of Jake and Clara
Amen. He was raised in Fort Collins, Colorado and attended public schools there. John
was an excellent student and participated in school athletics throughout junior and senior
high school. John attended Colorado State University, graduated with honors and was
awarded a Bachelor of Science degree with a major field of study in General Business in
1970. During his time at CSU, John met and married the love of his life, Marcia. After
undergraduate school John accepted employment in Fort Collins as a design engineer. Thereafter, John entered Law School at the University of Colorado, finishing high in his
class in 1973. During his final year of Law School, John was recruited and accepted em-
ployment with Chevron Corporation. Following graduation, with a Juris Doctorate de-
gree, John immediately sat for, and passed, the rigorous Colorado Bar exam.
After Chevron, John served in various legal and management positions with independent
oil and gas exploration and production companies. With Snyder Oil Corporation of Fort
Worth, Texas, John served as Vice President of a growing New York Stock Exchange company. Snyder eventually merged into Devon
Energy Corp.
In 1988, John left the corporate world and joined the preeminent 17th Avenue law firm of Burns, Wall, Smith and Mueller, P.C. as Spe-
cial Counsel. After a successful practice representing various oil and gas clients, John retired from the firm in 2004. Since that time John
has limited his practice to a part time endeavor serving limited clients.
John and Marcia have two children, John, Jr. and Jennifer, and are further blessed with four grandchildren, Hailey, Hannah, Hope and Hillary. All reside in Colorado. John and Marcia are very proud of their children’s accomplishments.
While working in the natural resources field John acquired professional experience working with both legislators and government regula-
tors; so it was natural that John became involved in government relations with the Elks early in his Elkdom career. Serving as Vice Chair-
man of the Colorado Elks Association from 1997 and later as State Chairman, John led an active team of Elks that served to represent the
interests of the Elks at the state and national levels.
John recognizes that all of the good works of Elkdom are carried out at the Lodge level and he has been active as a leader of Denver
Lodge No. 17 in a variety of capacities. He has served Lodge 17, the “Mother Lodge of the Rockies,” in all of the Lodge chairs. John’s
Lodge has honored his outstanding service by bestowing him the honors of “Elk of the Year” and Honorary Life Membership.
In addition to his service to Elkdom, John has served many dedicated hours to support and lead the Colorado Elks Association State Major
Project: Elks Laradon Hall. This large project serves over 500 developmentally disabled citizens of all ages. John served two full three-
year terms on Laradon’s Board of Directors, the last five as its Chair, and further served Laradon most recently as a director of its support-
ing foundation.
In 2008, John was elected Third Vice President of the Colorado Elks Association and thereafter served with distinction in each of the
three Vice President chairs and then as Colorado Elks State President in 2012.
John is a Past District Deputy and served on the Grand Lodge Committee on Judiciary from 2006 through 2013 and chaired this hard-
working committee his final two years.
“The help we extend to others increases our own riches.” Since his appointment to the Committee on Judiciary, John has been helping the
265 Lodges in Grand Lodge Area 6 with their legal matters. From advising Lodge Officers on statutory procedures and requirements, to
helping them with their by-laws and corporate documents, John established many friends and relationships throughout his eight states of
responsibility and throughout our Order. John has become a recognized expert on the Law of Non-Profits and taxation of exempt entities.
John passionately believes that the principles of Elkdom will guide us through periods of crisis and endorses the concept that maximum
effort should be focused on reversing the downward trend in membership. Creative ideas are never scarce with John, particularly when his
favorite subject — Elkdom — is the topic.
The celebration following the nomination of
John D. Amen as GERelect had a Mardi Gras
theme. It was organized by Jerry and Alice
Hilzer. Participants Barabara Batulis of Flor-
ence, CO 611; Karen Cooper of Deer Lodge,
MT 1737; and Lucinda Carpenter of Creede,
CO 506 display their happy faces.

Swans of New England Tours Swans of New England Tours donated four tick-ets to Saratoga in August for the lodge to raise money. The winners were drawn on August 2nd. This fund raising activity netted the lodge nearly $500 to assist in defraying our operational ex-penses. Once again in September, Swans of New Eng-land Tours is donating two tickets to the Christ-mas Show at Indian Head resort on December 4th, 2014 for the lodge to raffle off. Chances for these tickets will be sold at 6 tickets for $5.00 starting at the August 20th steak night. These tick-ets are valued at $105/each! Make sure you get your tickets early and often for a chance at win-ning this trip to this great show. Our thanks to Gary Forcier and
Linda Delaricheliere for these donations!
