Dear Herberich Families,

As we celebrate Thanksgiving I know the Herberich staff joins me in wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with such incredible families. As we kick off our “Herberich Helping Hands” program thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity. I know that the Copley-Fairlawn families that benefit from this annual collection are grateful.

As you can see in the picture below, Herberich School was able to demonstrate their apprecia-tion to our Veteran’s during our Veteran’s Day Recognition Assembly on November 11th. Many members of the VFW Post #349 attended the event. Fourth grade students created posters and essays that were part of the Veteran’s Day assembly. The student body sang “America, Of Thee I Sing” under the direction of Mrs. Holly Walton. 4th grade Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Debbie Rosso was recognized as the VFW Teacher of the Year. It was a memorable event for the community and Herberich.

Through the help of an Akron Community Foundation grant our first graders have been read-ing literature books during class with the classroom teacher and at home with a “reading coach”. The “100 Book Challenge” program consists of classroom leveled libraries in colored baskets that the students choose books to read from that are at their independent reading level. The kids would tell you that they pick books to read that are “fast, fun and easy”. As you will see in the pictures many students have reached the first goal of recording 100 lines which equals 25 hours of reading! The goal for the year is 100 hours of reading so the students are on track!

Herberich is also grateful for the many opportunities to learn from our families about their na-tive countries. November 17-21 was International Education Week sponsored by the U.S. De-partment of Education. Miss Kimberlin and her students provided the school with exciting op-portunities to learn about other countries. Each morning a student said the Herberich morning announcements in their native language. For our daily morning song that country’s national anthem was played. The students also created presen-tation boards after researching information about countries and presented their projects to classes. It was a great week!

I am thankful each and every day for the opportunity to work in such an extraordinary place. Please let me know if you have any questions, ideas, suggestions or concerns. I hope you have an amazing holiday filled with family, friends and laughter.

This is the time to think of others. As you all know, I have coordinated the Kiwanis Food Drive, Copley Police Share-A-Christmas Toy Drive and Copley Outreach Gently Worn Coat Drive for the past ten years. We will also have our giving tree waiting to be decorated with mittens, gloves, hats and scarves. This year I am hearing of so many more families in need within our own community. A separate flyer has already gone home with students - we will not be giving parties as rewards to the winning classes. This year it would be wonderful if we could all teach our students the true meaning of compassion by making sacrifices without expecting a reward. I thank you for your amazing generosity and compassion.

It is vital that you advise the office of any contact information changes. In case of emergency we follow the sequence provided on the emergency information form completed at the start of the school year. Also, please keep me updated with your e-mail address. I often use e-mail to let parents know of clinic visits. Please feel free to e-mail any changes to: [email protected] (be sure to have that sec-ond “silent e” or I will not get it.) This does not apply to change of addresses, where proof of residence is required.

CONTACT INFORMATION~

HOLIDAY DRIVES ~

DISMISSAL ~

For the safety of all our students, please remember that your child needs to be called off EVERY day he/she is absent. We have no way of knowing when he/she will be returning to school un-til the teacher takes attendance. Calls are made home checking on missing students between 9:40-10:00 a.m. All contact numbers are called until we get verification of a child’s absence. See contact information below.

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE—MRS. JOY NEALE-MAY

The district telephone system is very user friendly. Herberich has three incoming lines. If I do not answer promptly, I am either on another call or assisting a student in the clinic. Please leave your message instead of continuously calling back - remember it could be your child getting a band aid, ice pack or tem-perature taken. Except for call offs and/or dismissal changes, I will always call back as soon as possible. In fact, if there is no message left I check my caller ID and return the call if a number is displayed. Please feel free to leave a message for a teacher and/or staff member. These will be forwarded to their voicemail.

ABSENCE REPORTING~

We have had a wonderful autumn in the Art room. The Native Ameri-cans have been a real inspiration for first grade Inuit finger masks and teepees printed with real cow bones. It’s OK to ask a first grader what part of the cow that the bones are from. In 2nd grade we studied the American artist George Caitlin’s painting of “White Cloud, Head Chief of the Iowa’s”. The student’s drawings are a delightful depiction of the Indian Chief. In 3rd grade we used simple Native American mark-ings and color pencils to embellish the backs of turtles and lizards. It was back to the autumn theme for my little kindergarteners as they used puzzle pieces for falling leaves in their pictures.

Fourth graders applied watercolors to their overlapping leaves for a wist-ful effect. They will be decorating

their sculpted apple dolls for our win-ter lobby showcase display. During this time of gratitude, I would like to thank Mrs.Vanke and Mrs. Cassida, our district librarian for acquiring a wonderful collection of prints from the National Endowment of the Arts. This collection called “Picturing America” facilitates our study of the Arts and Crafts of the United States. I am indebted to them for this won-derful new resource that helps me to continue to meet the Ohio Standards for the Visual Arts.

ART NEWS—MRS. CATHY WOOLEY

Please be sure to date any notes sent to school, especially dismissal changes. Sometimes a note does not make it out of the back pack on the day it should, and it ends up in the office a day late. I presume that I am receiving current information and instruct a student he/she is carpool only to have him/her still waiting in the lobby once all the buses have left.

We were climbing the walls in physical education class in November, the climbing wall that is. Muscu-lar strength and endurance were the focus of our lessons as we learned how important they are to our overall health. Traversing on the climbing wall provided the children an opportunity to develop their muscular endurance, especially when we worked with a partner to lifeline climb. We spent one week moving through stations that developed aerobic endurance along with muscular strength and endurance. Herberich students are building a foundation of overall health and wellness at an early age!

The end of November brings with it a tradition in our physical education classes, The Turkey Hunt! We adventure into the dark gymnasium with a partner and a flashlight in search of hidden tur-keys. I think I look forward to this week even more than the children.

BER OCTOBER STUDENT OF THE MONTH Mrs. Mary Hoolihan is proud to announce Pranav Muthigi as Herberich’s student of the month for October.

Pranav is an ambitious fourth grader with a positive, upbeat personality. He shows a genuine interest in learning, and he approaches his schoolwork with thoughtfulness. He excels in all academic areas. He is a knowledgeable geographer, a logical mathematician, an avid reader, and a creative writer. As his teacher, I always look for-ward to reading his writing assignments because they are filled with rich vocabulary and imaginative ideas. Pranav also keeps himself busy with many extracurricular activi-ties. At Herberich, he attends Enrichment, he is a member of Art Club and Handchime Choir, and he is a morning announcer. Outside of school, Pranav enjoys playing tennis, practicing keyboarding, and reading the “Harry Potter” books. He is also a member of the Akron Chess Club where he plays against players of all ages. Because of Pranav’s well-roundedness and enthusiasm, he is a pleasure to have in class and a very worthy student of the month.

Reinforce six important reading skills with some colored cereal Here’s a fun way to reinforce six impor-tant reading skills. These skills will help your child understand and remember more of what she reads following a read-ing assignment. You’ll need a cup of colored cereal (or candy) in six colors. Have your child close her eyes and pick a piece of cereal. For each color, have her do one of the following tasks: 1. Blue—tell a word or words that are

important in reading. 2. Green—ask a question about what

she just read. Then look for the answer.

3. Orange—restate what she just read in her own words.

4. Yellow—make a prediction. What does she think will come next?

5. Brown—draw a picture of sketch of something important in the reading.

6. Red—relate something she read to something in her own life.

Your child will enjoy drawing out differ-ent colors. She may not even notice that she’s actually practicing her reading skills! Source: Barbara R. Blackburn, Classroom Instruction from A to Z, ISBN: 9781-5966-7038-9 (Eye on Education, 1-888-299-5350, www.eyeoneducation.com).

Research shows that children’s physical fitness leads to many benefits. Regular activity is linked to higher self-esteem and attentiveness in school. It also lowers the chance of health problems such as type 2 diabetes. To motivate your

child to get—and stay—active:

Set the tone. Instead of saying, “It’s time to exercise,” plan an activity your child will like. If she loves basketball, for example, have her meet some friends at the court to play.

Limit screen time. When your child watches TV or plays video games, encourage her to take active breaks. Re-member that TV, computer and video game use should not exceed two hours a day.

Offer suggestions. When your child has a friend over, play games that involve movement, such as tag, soccer and jumping rope. Indoors, try games such as “Simon Says” and “Red Light, Green Light.”

Plan family outings. Perhaps you have a tradition of going for a walk on Sunday afternoons. Or maybe you’d like to do something new, such as swimming at an indoor pool or snowshoeing. Whatever activity you choose, get your

family moving together.

Be creative. You can find lots of ways to sneak in exercise. During chore time, play music or race to finish a job. While doing errands, park away from the store and walk. Or stop at a playground on the way home.

Set an example. You don’t have to hit the gym every day, but if your child sees you staying fit (stretching, biking, walking with a neighbor, enjoying a sport, etc.), you’ll be a good role model.

Regular exercise is connected to school success for children

Tests don’t have to be stressful for your child Parents can ease the natural stress that may occur before and after testing. You can help your child prevent test anxiety if you:

♦ Build self-esteem. The goal is for your child to begin tests with confi-dence, not fear of failure. So give him opportunities for success in many other areas.

♦ Communicate with teachers. Stay up-to-date on your child’s progress at school. If he needs extra help, the teacher can suggest at-home learning activities. Ask how you can help.

♦ Build your child’s vocabulary. Talking, reading and word games help your child learn new words. You never know when one might pop up on a test.

♦ Encourage preparation. Plan several study sessions before the test. Provide a study spot where your child can concentrate.

♦ Give test tips. It’s important to read instructions carefully. If something is confusing, ask the teacher for help. Don’t get stuck on one question. Mark it, finish easier sections and then return to the trouble spot.

♦ Don’t pressure your child. If he worries too much, his performance may suffer. Emphasize your unconditional love. When the test is returned, talk about it. What can he learn from it? Compliment his hard work.

What are the three hardest words to say? They may be, “I was wrong.” But helping children learn to own up to the things they have done is a way to help them develop into mature adults. Here are some tips:

Think about why your child might not admit she’s wrong. Is she afraid to tell the truth? Does she want to blame someone else?

Help your child think about a way to make amends. If she sent a mean e-mail about someone in her class, she needs to send another one saying she made the story up.

Remember that apologies don't mean a lot if our child’s behavior doesn’t change. Source: Naomi Drew, The Kids’ Guide to Working Out Conflicts, ISBN: 1-575-42150-X (Free Spirit Publishing, 1-800-735-7323, www.freespirit.com).

P A G E 5

Think about how you can change your behavior if your child is afraid of your reaction. Stay calm even if you have to give yourself a “time out” be-fore dealing with the situation.

Help her put herself in someone else’s shoes. “How do you think your sister felt when you took her doll away?” This is called empathy, and it is a be-havior kids have to work to develop.

Herberich School has been chosen as a recipient of the Picturing America award.

Picturing America is a project of the National Endowment for the Humani-ties, conducted in cooperation with the American Library Association. Picturing America is a unique and engaging way for children to experience American history and culture by bring-ing great works of American art into the classrooms and libraries. The collection includes 40 high-quality reproductions, as well as a resource book, to

enhance learning in a wide range of subjects: American history, social studies, writing, literature, and civics.

We are excited about remembering America's history through our nation's art!

Dear Herberich Primary School,

The PTA is working hard on so many programs for the students to enjoy!

We had an awesome Family Movie Night on November 25 watching Kung Fu Panda in the gym. It was a lot of fun and resembled a sleep over with sleeping bags and blankets. Ohio PTA is launching a PTA Movie web site and gift cards are on sale – they are $20 each and you can order a movie from thousands of titles. Our PTA can keep 10%. If you choose to buy a gift card you will get in free to the movie. Not able to make the Family Movie Night? You will still be able to purchase a gift card - just send me an email at [email protected] no later than Monday, December 1st.

Our Box Tops/ Pump It Up contest is underway. The students are very excited about this. It is only the beginning – since we collect Box Tops all year long we have decided to run the contest through April 17, 2009 and the winning grade party will be on May 20, 2009. The standings so far are….first place = 3rd grade, second place = 2nd grade, third place = kindergarten & preschool, fourth place = 1st grade and fifth place = 4th grade. Keep collecting those box tops. For your information – if you shop at Giant Eagle, they are offering 30 bonus box tops in December. Buy 10 participating Box Tops Prod-ucts in a single transaction with your Giant Eagle Advantage card between 12/1/08 and 12/24/08 and receive 30 BONUS BOX TOPS .

Market Day and Scrip programs are our sole source of fundraising and they support all the wonderful things the PTA does at Herberich. I am so thankful to all the wonderful people who order and support these great programs. We do not have to sell wrapping paper or other novelty items. The simplicity and convenience these programs offer are amazing. You buy gas, groceries, eat out at least once a month and with the holidays fast approaching – why not buy your gift cards and then go shopping or just make your gift giving easy by giving a gift card to your teachers, family and friends. Please, order from Market Day. Keep the delicious chicken breasts in your freezer, they make a quick delicious meal.

Romi Brozeit is working hard organizing our upcoming Gingerbread Shop and the students always enjoy shopping for special gifts for their loved ones. Send in your money and shopping list so your children can participate in this PTA service

We have new after-school programs coming in January. Look for more information coming soon! Christine Hohenhil is working on some wonderful programs for our students to enjoy.

Susan Leach is working hard on membership – we hope to meet our goal. The next time you are in the school check out the awesome Football Field display and see where your child’s class ranks in the standings

So many people do so many wonderful things to make our group run smoothly – Christine Farren, Laura Poundstone, Julie Shinn, Marji Carrino, Wendy Susi, Romi Brozeit, Susan Leach, Christine Hohenshil, Tiffany Hicks, Melanie Hohenaldel, Anne Kimmins, Stephanie Cornachionne, Gerri Keller, Joy Neale-May, Tiffany Hicks, Leighann Krenz, Wendy Roddy, Diane Shovestull, Laurie Gamauf, Christy Webb, Deanna Matthies, Connie Rankin and Rhonda Cotleur. I would never have accepted this position if it weren’t for all of you outstanding volunteers.

Sincerely, Beth Hofacker

2008-09 Reflections Theme: WOW!!

For nearly 40 years the PTA Reflection’s program has encouraged millions of students to “reflect” on a theme and create works of art and literature based on a chosen theme. 15,000 pieces of artwork were created at the Unit level last year alone in Ohio for the Reflection’s pro-gram.

What is Reflection’s? Reflection’s is a fine arts recognition pro-gram designed to enhance rather than replace a quality arts education program in schools. It provides opportunities for stu-dents to express themselves and to receive positive recognition for their creative and artistic efforts.

On November 6th the PTA provided din-ner for the teachers prior to their parent/teacher conferences. The teachers enjoyed wonderful comfort food of soups, salad bar and delicious desserts all provided by PTA members.

Without the dedication of our PTA mem-bers, we couldn't have done this. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks and appre-ciation to Leighann Krenz, Beth Hofacker, Julie Hall, Stacy Nedolast, Joelle Elicker, Kelly Hartz and Sue Timmer.

I'm enlisting the help of anyone willing.

December Market day is Cookie Bonus Month! All cookie orders raise extra funds this month so please consider ordering a box or more for you, your friends and family. Try the new chocolate chip mint cookie dough – we sampled it at the October pick-up day and it was a huge hit. As you plan for your holiday dinners or family gatherings remember the convenient, tasty foods of Market Day – there is everything offered from appetizers (the egg rolls are wonderful), main dishes (hams and turkeys) and wonderful deserts (cookies and more). Ordering is easy at www.marketday.com and pick up is quick stop at the school on Tuesday night. It is a win-win – we raise money for the children and you save time and get great, con-venient food. An additional $315.09 was raised this month for the school and our kids through Market Day – thank you! Thank you to the volunteers who helped this month. Huge thanks to Julie and Charles Shinn, Mark Elicker, Dwayne Butler, and Michael Carrino. Congratulations to our own PTA President, Mrs. Beth Hofacker. She was the winner of the Pie Sale gift card.
