T&T SHIPBUILDING & REPAIR (S&R) CLUSTER

Diversifying our Economy, one Ship at a time©...

Hello S&R Stakeholders, Fifth Summit of the Americas - Port of Spain. I must admit it was a delightful experience to receive the letter from the National Secretariat, Office of the Prime Minister informing me of their approval to attend the Fifth Summit of the Americas. As an accredited media person, this allowed me to witness first hand the successful staging of this historic event. Some thirty-four Heads of State and Government, together with their delegations were assembled in Port of Spain to attend the II Hemispheric Private Sector Forum and to discuss several important hemispheric issues. These events were held between April 15th -19th onboard the Carnival owned cruise ship “Caribbean Princess” and at the waterfront Hyatt Regency Trinidad. Our S&R Cluster, which is an initiative of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, congratulates the newly appointed Minister who was also the overseer of the Government planning committee that handled the Summit’s successful implementation. Needless to say, it was truly a wonderful time to have five entire days to explore the Fincantieri built cruise ship and to sample the ship’s victuals at various locations throughout. As promised, we proudly feature in this month’s special issue an exclusive insight into this tremendous undertaking. Successful S&R Stakeholder Meeting and Shipyard Tour held at CDESL.

Sincerely, T&T Shipbuilding and Repair Cluster. Wilfred de Gannes. Deputy Leader.

On April 30th 2009 our S&R Cluster held its 1st 2009 Stakeholders meeting at Caribbean Drydock and Engineering Services Shipyard located at Port Chaguaramas, North-Western Trinidad. Included was a specially arranged Shipyard tour lead by Mr. W. Beharry, CDESL General Manager.

Manning Insists Region Will Benefit from 5th Summit - April 29th 2009

Prime Minister, Patrick Manning, has once again insisted that both T&T and the Caribbean region will benefit from the recent hosting of the Fifth Summit of the Americas held in this country. He made the point on while addressing invitees at the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) at the Diplomatic Centre. Manning said there “can be no doubt about the gains to our country and the region from this undertaking” which he described as historic.

Cruise Shares Take Beating as Swine Flu Fears Grow - April 27th 2009

Cruise company shares are taking a hammering in early trading in New York on fears that a major swine flu outbreak could damage their earnings. Carnival Corp shares were down almost 10% to $25.62 while those in Royal Caribbean Cruises had fallen 15% to $2.22.

Investors are concerned that the flu could spread and scupper economic recovery, especially in sectors that rely on travel and tourism. In addition, the first call of many Caribbean cruising itineraries involves Mexican resorts.

Panama Canal Upbeat on the Future - April 25th 2009 Thousands of maritime and trade industry professionals joined Panama Canal Authority (ACP) representatives in Singapore this week for Sea Asia 2009 – the world’s largest shipping conference. During Thursday’s session, “The Charterer’s Forum,” Vice President of Research and Market Analysis Rodolfo Sabonge briefed attendees on a range of issues from traffic projections to the economic slowdown and the Canal’s $5.25 billion Expansion Program. “As with any business during this time of economic uncertainty, we are monitoring trends and adjusting where necessary to ensure that we are maximizing all of the Canal’s resources,” said Mr. Sabonge. “The shipping industry, as a whole, has experienced tough times before. The same holds true for the Canal – we have gone through World Wars, Asian flu, the Iraq war, and other economic and financial upheavals in the world, but we have and continue to weather all the challenges that come our way – our business is grounded in its solid fundamentals, strategic vision, planning and sound management. And at the end of the day, the Panama Canal still is the best value in shipping.” Mr. Sabonge also confirmed that the ACP remains focused on the expansion project, which continues to push ahead on-time and on-budget. He noted that March 2009 signaled another historic milestone when the ACP received bids from three world-renowned consortia vying to design and build the new locks. The bids are currently being evaluated.

Shipbuilding Academy Planned - April 24th 2009

Construction on a shipbuilding academy proposed for Jackson County could begin as soon as next year according to an April 26th report from the Sun Herald. Gov. Haley Barbour invited interested parties to submit a full application to the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA) on May 12th for a US$20 million Community Development Block Grant. The money is part of Katrina-recovery funds earmarked for economic development and disbursed through the MDA.

Nigerian Shipping Firm Shops for $500m to Buy Vessels – April 23rd 2009

All appeared set for the take-off of the N1 billion equity share company, floated recently by the Association of Indigenous Ship Owners of Nigeria. Already, plans have been concluded for the company to take delivery of six vessels before the end of the second quarter of the year. The vessels, though fairly used, are not more than five years old. They would cost as much as $500 million. The Association's Secretary, Captain Dada Labinjo said in Lagos recently that the vessels would be classified by reputable classification society for them to be accepted for all kinds of operations. Labinjo dispelled insinuations that vessels operated by indigenous ship owners were not classified, hence, the denial of shipping services contract by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its subsidiaries, saying they preferred to give their contracts to foreigners for obvious reasons. The Master Mariner, who spoke at pre-trade mission to Singapore by the Nigerian Chambers of Shipping said, "NNPC, independent marketers do prefer to use foreign ships. Nigeria is lifting 200,000 metric tons of finished petroleum products every day. Not even a single metric ton is being lifted by Nigerians. "This is the only country that sells oil on Free on Board (FOB). The Nigerian Ship Owners Association will be bringing in six ships before the end of the second quarter of the year. We are shopping for $500 million and we have made remarkable progress in that direction."

Korean Shipbuilders Eye Orders from Brazil - April 22nd 2009

According to a report from Manila Bulletin Publishing, South Korea's four shipbuilders will meet executives of Brazil's Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras), in Seoul during the week of April 20th in hopes of getting vessel orders worth more than US$25 billion, the companies said. This follows another report on April 20th from Reuters that the Chief Financial Officer of Brazil's Petrobras said the company is seeking about 240 offshore oil development vessels in the next five to six years. The vessels would include drillships, storage units, supply vessels, transportation vessels and others.

L - R: Not to be forgotten is the Dame Lorraine or Dame Lorine. This mas character was played by the 18th and early 19th century French planters, who would dress up in elegant costumes of the French aristocracy and parade in groups at private homes and on Carnival Sunday night.

Another Dame Lorraine with baby doll was played up until the 1930s. The masquerader portrays a gaily dressed doll, decked out in a frilled dress and bonnet. In her arms she carries a doll which symbolizes an illegitimate baby.

The Post Private Sector Forum cocktail party also included several dancing Moko Jumbies. The almost forgotten West African tradition of the Moko Jumbie or "stilt-walker," has been adopted into our world renowned carnival celebrations.

CROWLEY PLAYS ROLE IN SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS

Crowley played a behind-the-scenes role in assuring Heads of States have safe transportation during the Fifth Summit of the Americas.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Interceptor vessels were used to assist these two vessels alongside the Cruise Ship “Caribbean Princess” Inset Photo: Vessels being safely offloaded at the Port.

The company successfully transported two Interceptor vessels or "Safe Boats" to Trinidad for U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The vessels will be used to ensure the security of visiting dignitaries and Heads of States. The U.S. government agency thanked Crowley Maritime for coordinating and assisting in this important task. "On behalf of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for a job well done in coordinating and assisting the CBP, and the Trinidad and Tobago Customs and Excise Division's shipment of two Safe Boats. With the Summit of the Americas being held in Trinidad and Tobago between April 17th -19th, it was critical that the two Interceptor vessels arrived in Trinidad as scheduled to support the security of the visiting Heads of States and the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago," said Karl A. Brown, Chief of Party for the Customs and Border Protection in Trinidad and Tobago.

KOREAN SHIPBUILDERS EYE ORDERS FROM BRAZIL'S PETROBRAS South Korea's four shipbuilders will meet executives of Brazil's Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobras), in Seoul in hopes of getting vessel orders worth more than US$25 Billion.

"We hope the meeting (with Petrobras) will result in real orders for offshore facilities and vessels, though there may be no immediate results an executive at one of the four shipbuilders told Dow Jones by phone. Petrobras' Chief Financial Officer Almir Barbassa and other executives will make presentations to local financial institutions on shipping finance, before holding separate meetings with each of the shipbuilders - Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., STX Shipbuilding Co. Samsung Heavy Industries Co. and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. "Samsung Heavy and Daewoo Shipbuilding will be in a better position to win orders for offshore facilities such as drill ships and semi-submersible drilling rigs, due to their experience and know-how," said an executive at another shipbuilder. But the other two shipbuilders – Hyundai Heavy and STX Shipbuilding

– may also win orders as Petrobras is expected to place orders for 28 offshore facilities and vessels with overseas suppliers, said a spokesman at a third shipbuilder.

"That's because two shipbuilders cannot cope with all of the 28 ships," he said. Oil development facilities are likely to account for more than half the 28 vessel orders, shipbuilders said. The government said it will provide strong support to help the shipbuilders, which are the world's biggest, win orders from Petrobras at the meetings.

"The separate meetings will pave the way for the shipbuilders to get contracts, with vessel orders drying up amid the unprecedented economic slowdown," an official at the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said by phone. Brazil has suggested that the two countries do a barter deal in which South Korean shipbuilders provide the South American country with drill ships or floating production, storage and offloading platforms in return for stakes in oil fields in the Santos area, according to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. However, the Petrobras officials aren't expected to discuss any oil development issues or meet with Korean energy firms, including state-run oil developer Korea National Oil Corp., during next week's visit to Seoul, said an official at KNOC Friday. In November 2008, South Korea and Petrobras signed a memorandum of understanding in which any payment for orders Petrobras places with Korean companies for vessels and plants will be insured by state-run Korea Export Insurance Corp.

MANNING: TT$120 MILLION FOR SUMMIT CRUISE LINERS.

Prime Minister, Patrick Manning, said it cost the T&T Government TT$120 million to lease the two cruise liners, the “Carnival Princess” and the “Carnival Victory”, for use during the Fifth Summit of the Americas. The cruise ships were used to accommodate delegates and journalists for the summit. He said the Government undertook the hosting of the summit understanding what the costs were, but also understanding what the potential benefits were. Manning said he was confident that investment would come from the venture. In response to questions, he said investment decisions are not made in two days, adding, “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”
