Dear Parents and Children,
We hope you’ve had a lovely week and please know that we understand the struggles of home working and
learning – well done for all that you’re doing! We hope the children have enjoyed using DB Primary this week
with the opportunity to communicate with their friends, class teacher and access other resources. Our staff are
continuing to work very hard to keep school alive and as ever, we continue to be inspired by the words of John
10:10 ‘Life in all its Fullness’.
This week, as the nation marked the 100th birthday of
Captain Tom, I have been exploring the history of our
beautiful school, first opened in 1864 as Farnborough
National School, first located in Farnborough Street.
In 1939, the school became known as North
Farnborough Church of England Junior School -
becoming St. Peter’s in 1952 and moving to our
current location in 1962. It was quite moving to
discover that ‘Learn to Live’ has been the school
motto since then. I hope we can all take great
comfort from this history and our on-going vision of
‘Learning to Live Life in all its Fullness’, particularly as
we all grapple with a new way of ‘living and learning’ right now. In time, we look forward to updating the ‘About
Us’ page of our website with more photos and information.
As we think about the history of our school, it’s
also timely that next week marks the 75th
anniversary of VE Day. Sadly, all community
celebrations have been cancelled – but we can still
mark this special occasion from the safety of our
homes! Our Learning Support Assistants have put
together some afternoon activities for the children
in school to work on next week and we also invite
you to join in these celebrations! In our newsletter
this week, you will find a page dedicated to VE Day
and keep an eye out on DB Primary and/or our
website and Twitter page for ways to get involved
at home. If we can all send in photos of our VE Day
home learning, we can still celebrate together and almost have our own virtual street party! The staff in school
continue to engage in staff training and meetings via Zoom – it’s a great way of keeping in touch and could prove
a nice way for families to join together for VE Day celebrations.
Newsletter Friday 1st May 2020
As we continue to think about the history of St.
Peter’s School and the inspiration we can take
from Peter, we are continuing to share
collective worship resources for the children to
engage in. Earlier this week, we shared an
assembly delivered by the Youth Minster at St.
Peter’s Church, themed around the story ‘Jesus
calms the storm’ – offering comfort that ‘we’re
all in the same boat’ and a reminder that this
storm will pass. The video is still available to
access via DB Primary and could be a nice
opportunity for the children to express how
they’re feeling with a reminder that while we’re
apart from one another, there are lots of ways
we can feel together. As part of their thinking,
the children might like to make an origami paper boat and then add the names of the people they particularly
miss right now – praying for them, one by one, as they add the names to their boat.
This week, we also shared the story ‘Jesus and Peter walk on water’ via DB Primary and the ‘Latest News’ page of
our website. This includes a video link and a reflective task with links to our Value of Celebration. As part of this
activity, we’re encouraging the children to consider the advice Peter might have given us as we think about our
own goals and how we might achieve and celebrate them. All these suggestions are additional extras and we
don’t want any of our families to feel overwhelmed by the activities on offer – please do what is right and best for
you.
Thank you for the photos and work you have been able to share via DB Primary – it’s been a lovely way of keeping
in touch. Our staff team will continue to update DB Primary on a regular basis and we hope it will be a source of
inspiration, in addition to the weekly home learning activities. Next week, we hope to get some of our Student
Leadership groups up and running via DB Primary. We have also published the next four Gambia challenges – if
you’re looking for some additional tasks to keep the children entertained.
As ever, please phone or email us if we can be of any support – our office is open every day.
Wishing you a lovely weekend and keep in touch,
Miss Carmella Reece

Mark the 75th Anniversary of VE Day from home
On Friday 8 May as we pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of the entire Second World War genera-tion, from British, Commonwealth and Allied Forces to evacuees and those who served on the home
front. As we face some of the most challenging times since the end of the Second World War, now more than ever it is important to unite in recognition of service to the nation, just as communities did 75 years
ago. There are many parallels between the struggles of the Second World War and what we are going through today. We look to our Second World War generation to learn from their experiences, and we
continue our work to protect them from the threat we currently face.

Challenge Five: Hosting our very own ‘Gambia
Garden Show’! Join us on a tour of the Kaira
Konko Garden and learn about the impact of com-
munity garden projects in The Gambia. Inspired by
these, we challenge you to design your own gar-
den or create a tree decoration.
Challenge Six: Join us in the rice fields for
some mindfulness - create a Reflection Jar
and fill it with happy thoughts! Meet Soma
teacher Mr Bakary Baldeh for a tour of his
local rice field and for more information
about rice farming.
Challenge Seven: Join us for some block making
and learn about our community building projects!
Inspired by these, we challenge you to design and
build a small-scale structure that could benefit or
represent your chosen community?
Challenge Eight: Learn about schools in The
Gambia and meet two of our teachers for
some counting in the local language! Taking
inspiration from the teachers and classroom
environments in The Gambia, we challenge
you to learn and teach someone else how to
count to ten in Mandinka or Fula.
